Start by printing your printer’s own nozzle check or print-quality diagnostic page. Missing or broken color bars point to an ink-delivery problem; if that test looks clean, check the paper, print settings, app and image before running cleaning cycles. The exact menu labels vary by printer model, and the cleaning steps below apply to inkjet printers—not every printer type.
1. Run a printer-generated diagnostic first
Use the printer’s maintenance menu to print a nozzle check, print-quality report or equivalent test page. Follow the model’s instructions to read the pattern: gaps, broken lines or a missing color can indicate that a nozzle is clogged or ink is not reaching the printhead correctly. Canon identifies nozzle checks as useful for diagnosing streaks and incorrect colors, while Epson uses gaps or broken lines in the pattern to identify nozzle issues. Canon’s TR7120 nozzle-check guidance and Epson’s model support show examples; use the instructions for your exact model because menus differ.
If the printer’s own test is clean but a photo prints badly from one program, do not start by cleaning the printhead. Check that photo’s file, the app’s print options and the driver’s color-management settings first.
2. Check ink, paper and print settings
Confirm ink levels
Check every ink color in the printer utility or control panel before cleaning. Low or old ink can contribute to faint or incorrect output, and cleaning cycles use ink. Replace ink only when the level and the guidance for your model indicate it is needed; a bad-looking photo alone does not prove a cartridge is empty.

Match the paper to the driver setting
Use photo paper compatible with the printer, load it with the printable side facing the correct direction, and select the matching paper or media type in the print dialog. Use clean, dry, uncurled sheets. A mismatch between the paper in the printer and the selected media setting can reduce print quality. Paper size, finish and supported media vary by model, so check the printer manual rather than assuming one paper brand or finish is universally right.
Check quality and color options
- Select a photo or high-quality setting when appropriate; draft or economy modes may produce lighter results.
- Make sure color printing is enabled and grayscale or black-and-white printing is off.
- Check that the application and printer driver are not applying conflicting color corrections. If the editing app manages color, review its color-handling options along with the driver settings.
3. Clean the printhead only if the test pattern is broken
For an inkjet printer with gaps or missing colors in its diagnostic, use the built-in head-cleaning utility described in the manual for that exact model, then print another nozzle check. Compare the new pattern with the first one before deciding whether to repeat the procedure.

Epson’s general cleaning guidance allows up to three standard cleaning cycles and describes power cleaning as a more ink-intensive option for severe or repeated problems on supported models. That is Epson guidance, not a universal schedule for all printers. Check ink levels and your model’s instructions before using a deeper cleaning function. Do not dismantle or manually scrub the printhead based on general advice.
4. If colors are wrong, separate screen differences from a fault
A print will not necessarily look exactly like the image on a screen, even when the printer is working properly. Epson’s AM-C400/AM-C550 User’s Guide puts it plainly: “Your printed colors can never exactly match your on-screen colors.” Display settings, the image file, paper and the app’s color management all affect the result. Ink can also look different before it has dried, so assess the print after it has dried.

If the diagnostic is sound but the print has an unexpected color cast, recheck that the job is in color mode, the selected media matches the loaded paper, and the application and driver are not both applying incompatible color adjustments. If the same photo prints correctly from another application, that points toward the original app or its settings rather than a nozzle problem.

If the printer-generated pattern still shows missing colors or bands after the maintenance steps recommended for your model, consult that model’s official support page or manual. Use the manufacturer’s warranty or authorized service options where appropriate. A persistent defect warrants model-specific diagnosis; it does not by itself establish that a printhead or other part must be replaced. HP’s print-quality troubleshooting guidance likewise directs users toward further support when troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
