To extend greenhouse growing into cooler months, match crops and protection to your local climate, then add only as much cover or heat as the crop needs. Vent covers on bright days, and use safe, well-distributed heat when passive protection is not enough. Cool-season crops can often keep producing under protection into early winter, while warm-season crops may gain an earlier start or later finish; neither timing nor frost protection is universal.
Choose the right level of protection
Protection ranges from a fabric cover over a bed to a greenhouse with active climate control. Pick according to the area you need to protect, expected cold, crop, and how much ventilation or heating you can manage.
| Method | What it protects | How it extends the season |
|---|---|---|
| Row cover | A bed or crop row; fabric rests over plants or is supported above them. | Traps some heat and blocks wind. NC State Extension estimates 4–5°F of frost protection for the row covers it discusses; Colorado State University Extension says some floating covers can provide up to 10°F, depending on material and grade. These are source-specific estimates, not guarantees for every fabric or site. |
| Low tunnel | A crop row beneath hoops and covering material. | Provides a larger protected space than fabric laid directly on plants. NC State includes low tunnels in its 4–5°F frost-protection estimate. |
| Cold frame | A small planting area under a low, covered enclosure. | Offers localized shelter; open or vent it when the interior warms. |
| High tunnel | A larger growing area beneath a tunnel structure. | Usually relies on passive protection and ventilation rather than active heating. |
| Greenhouse | A contained growing space that may be heated and ventilated. | Can provide more active climate control, but the heat required depends on the crop, location, construction, and exposed surface area. |
These methods are not interchangeable: a cover may be enough to delay frost for a bed, while a tunnel or greenhouse serves a larger area or a more demanding climate. For a local starting point, see NC State Extension’s overview of season extenders and greenhouses and the University of Minnesota Extension guide to extending the growing season.

Choose crops and timing for your climate
Cool-season crops
Leafy and other cool-season crops may continue under protection into early winter when moisture and fertility are adequate. Protection does not remove the need to monitor the growing conditions: crop response depends on local weather and the type of shelter.
#1 Best Overall
- TWO SEPARATELY ADJUSTABLE HEATING ELEMENTS: 750 watts or 1500 watts power. The heater is ideal for rooms up to 120 ft² with an average height of 6.6 feet.
- PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL: The thermostat automatically starts and stops the heater when the desired temperature is reached. The temperature range is from 32°F to185°F.
- AIR CIRCULATION MODE: Activating the air circulation mode turns the heater into a fan. The air movement prevents heat buildup around plants.
- QUICK AND EVEN AIR CIRCULATION: The air circulation heater is very efficient and easily circulates up to 5800 ft³ of air per hour. Since the heater does not run as long, you save electricity and money.
- SPLASH-PROOF ACCORDING TO IPX4: Thanks to splash protection, the heater can be safely and reliably used in damp rooms. It can also withstand rain and irrigation water without any problems.
Warm-season crops
Protected growing can help warm-season crops get an earlier start or continue later. NC State Extension says they may gain as much as a month at the beginning or end of the season under protected conditions. Treat that as an extension estimate, not a promise: it is not a universal calendar for every crop, greenhouse, or location.
For either group, base planting and protection decisions on your local frost patterns and the temperatures your crop needs. Extension guidance from North Carolina, Minnesota, and Colorado reflects practical regional advice rather than a single schedule that applies everywhere.

Manage covers and tunnels to avoid overheating
A cover that helps on a cold night can trap excessive heat on a sunny day. NC State Extension advises opening covers in anticipation of high temperatures, particularly for heat-sensitive crops, rather than waiting until plants are already hot. UMN Extension also cautions that heavy row covers can retain too much heat and reduce sunlight enough to interfere with growth. Vent during bright, warm weather; remove covers when temperatures stay warm.
Pollination is another reason to open or remove a cover. Insect-pollinated crops need pollinators to reach their flowers, so remove the cover when flowering begins if pollinators cannot access the plants. See Colorado State University Extension’s frost-protection guidance for related cover considerations.

Heat the greenhouse only as much as crops require
Do not size a heater from greenhouse floor area alone. NC State Extension explains that heating needs depend on the desired plant temperature, location, greenhouse construction, and the structure’s total exposed surface area. The right target is therefore crop- and site-specific; the extension sources do not establish one temperature or heater capacity for every greenhouse.
NC State lists electricity, gas, oil, and wood as possible fuels, with forced hot air, radiant heat, hot water, and steam among the ways to distribute heat. Combustion appliances should vent outdoors. NC State does not recommend unvented propane or kerosene heaters.

Circulate air in a heated structure
Warm air rises, while cooler air can settle around plants near the floor. NC State recommends circulating fans to mix greenhouse air and make temperatures more uniform. Air movement helps reduce temperature stratification; it does not replace choosing an appropriate heat target or safely venting a combustion heater.
Build a practical plan
- Identify the crop and season goal. Decide whether you want to protect cool-season crops into colder weather or give warm-season crops a head start or longer finish.
- Match protection to the area and expected cold. Use a row cover or low tunnel for localized protection; consider a cold frame, high tunnel, or greenhouse when the growing area or climate need warrants it.
- Plan how you will vent the protection. Be ready to open covers or greenhouse vents before sunny conditions overheat plants. Account for pollinator access when covered crops flower.
- Use active heat only where needed. Set the target around crop requirements and local conditions, not a generic greenhouse temperature. Ensure combustion heating is vented outdoors.
- Check plant-level conditions. In heated greenhouses, use circulation fans to reduce warm-air buildup above and cooler air around plants.
For a broader regional perspective on covers, tunnels, and greenhouses, consult University of Georgia Cooperative Extension’s season-extension publication. Its guidance, like the other extension sources, should be adapted to local climate and crop needs.
