To search your GitHub work across repositories, build an index from the underlying records—commits, issues, pull requests, reviews, discussions, and other sources you care about—rather than treating GitHub’s activity feed as a complete history. Backfill records first, preserve their GitHub URLs and identifiers, then keep the index current with webhooks or scheduled API syncs.

Decide what belongs in your knowledge base

Start by defining which GitHub records you want to retrieve later. A practical collection can include commits, issues, pull requests, reviews, discussions, releases, and repository metadata. Depending on how you work, you may also want notifications or starred repositories. GitHub’s REST activity API covers activity streams, feeds, notifications, starring, and watching, but an activity stream is only one input to a durable index.

For every record, retain its source URL and stable GitHub identifier. The index should be a searchable map back to GitHub, not a detached copy that loses where information came from.

Build the index from historical records first

Do not use the REST events endpoint as your historical backfill. GitHub documents that an event timeline includes at most 300 events and only events created during the previous 30 days. Older events are excluded even if the timeline contains fewer than 300 entries. GitHub also says event delivery can take from 30 seconds to six hours, and that the endpoint is not designed for real-time use. These are hard constraints of the endpoint, not a safe estimate of how much history your account contains.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Instead, collect the record types you selected from their corresponding APIs or other appropriate GitHub sources, then use recent activity to help identify changes. The event feed can be useful for recent discovery, but it cannot substitute for a record-by-record backfill.

Choose a synchronization method

Approach How it works Trade-offs
Periodic polling Your collector checks selected GitHub endpoints on a schedule and imports new or changed records. Straightforward to operate, but update freshness depends on the schedule. For event polling, honor GitHub’s X-Poll-Interval response header and use ETags; an unchanged request can return 304 Not Modified without consuming the current rate limit. Event polling is not real-time.
Webhook-assisted sync GitHub sends configured event notifications to your integration when relevant changes occur. Useful for prompt updates, but does not provide historical backfill. Keep a periodic reconciliation sync to catch missed deliveries or changes your webhook setup does not cover.

GitHub documents polling guidance and ETag behavior for its REST activity endpoints, and webhooks as an integration surface for updates. Neither a webhook-only design nor the bounded events feed gives you a complete history. A hybrid setup—historical backfill, webhook-assisted updates, and periodic reconciliation—is a reasonable way to balance coverage and freshness.

Normalize records while keeping their provenance

Store common fields in a consistent structure so one query can search across repositories and record types. Useful fields include:

  • Record type and stable GitHub identifier.
  • Repository name or identifier, plus the record’s GitHub URL.
  • Title and body, or commit message for commits.
  • Author and created and updated timestamps.
  • Labels, review state, or other type-specific metadata when applicable.
  • Links to related records, such as an issue and its pull request.

Keep raw identifiers or source payloads where practical so you can reprocess records if your schema changes. Preserve the record type rather than flattening everything into undifferentiated text. Discussions and Issues can cover overlapping topics; an early-adoption study reported duplication between the two. Cross-link related records and label their source types rather than assuming they represent mutually exclusive subjects.

Make search work across repositories

A local full-text index can combine record text with metadata filters. Let yourself narrow results by repository, type, author, label, and time, then open the retained source URL to inspect the canonical record on GitHub.

Use GitHub CLI search for targeted lookups

The GitHub CLI’s gh search commands search code, commits, issues, pull requests, and repositories. This makes the CLI a useful companion when you need a quick targeted lookup without waiting for, or building, a unified personal index. Issue search has detailed filters; consult GitHub’s GitHub CLI search manual and issue and pull request search documentation for supported query syntax.

Understand the limits of semantic issue search

On supported GitHub hosts, gh search issues offers semantic and hybrid modes in addition to lexical search, which is the default. Those modes apply to issues, return a single page, and are not available on GitHub Enterprise Server. They do not provide semantic search across every kind of GitHub content, so retain a cross-record index if you need one search experience for commits, reviews, discussions, and other records too.

Protect private and organizational data

For private activity, authenticate as the user whose records you are collecting and request only the permissions the collector needs. GitHub’s authenticated-user events endpoint documentation states that calls made by the authenticated user can return that user’s private events; unauthenticated results show only public events.

Make synchronization recoverable

A knowledge base is only useful if you can tell whether it is current and recover cleanly from partial failures. Track a sync cursor or watermark, the last successful run, API errors, and duplicate handling. Make imports idempotent so rerunning a page or webhook does not create duplicate records. Update indexed content when GitHub records are edited, and define how deletions or inaccessible records are reflected in the index. Surface the last successful sync time so stale results are visible instead of silently appearing complete.

Choose local-first or hosted storage based on your needs

Design Benefits Costs and considerations
Local-first index Greater control over where indexed content is stored and the option to search while offline, depending on implementation. You manage backups, updates, and access across devices.
Hosted index Can simplify access from multiple devices and centralize synchronization. Requires operating or trusting a hosted service and carefully managing stored private content and credentials.

There is no universally best database, search engine, hosting model, or synchronization cadence. Match those decisions to your repository volume, privacy requirements, need for multi-device access, and willingness to maintain infrastructure.
