Usually, yes—if your application already needs UUIDs and benefits from generating IDs across services or clients. UUIDv7 sorts roughly by creation time, which can improve database index locality compared with random UUIDv4. It is not automatically better than a compact integer key, and its performance depends on the database, schema, generator, and workload.
What UUIDv7 changes for a database key
A UUID is a 128-bit identifier. UUIDv7 puts a Unix timestamp in milliseconds in its most significant 48 bits; the remaining bits include version and variant fields plus uniqueness material. When compared in the specified byte order, UUIDv7 values therefore sort approximately by creation time.
That ordering gives UUIDv7 a structural advantage over UUIDv4 for many insert patterns. Random UUIDv4 inserts can land at unrelated locations in a B-tree index, while time-ordered UUIDv7 inserts tend to cluster more closely. The IETF’s RFC 9562 says systems without a UUIDv1 legacy requirement “SHOULD use UUIDv7.” This is a standards recommendation and a locality rationale—not a guarantee of a particular speedup in every database or workload.
When UUIDv7 is a good choice
- IDs are created in more than one place. Services, clients, or offline processes can mint identifiers without coordinating with one central sequence.
- UUIDs are already part of your application contract. If your API and data model already use UUIDs, UUIDv7 can retain that format while avoiding UUIDv4’s random placement pattern.
- Your database and generator handle it well. Use an implementation that conforms to RFC 9562 and handles randomness, clock precision, and multiple IDs generated within the same timestamp interval appropriately.
- Your actual workload benefits from its insert pattern. Validate the result using representative concurrency, reads, joins, and schema rather than assuming an index-locality improvement will translate into a universal performance win.
When an integer or another key may be better
- A single database creates all IDs. A compact integer key may reduce the footprint of primary-key and foreign-key indexes, which matters when those values are stored repeatedly at scale.
- You need strict sequencing. UUIDv7’s timestamp is not a global event sequence: clocks can differ, and concurrent generators can produce values whose order does not exactly match event order.
- Creation time must not be exposed. UUIDv7 reveals an approximate timestamp. It is not a secret or an access-control token; use authorization checks to protect records.
- Your platform lacks a suitable maintained generator. If the database version does not provide safe UUIDv7 generation, an application-side generator introduces an operational dependency that may outweigh the benefit.

- Read and join patterns: Check whether key size or index layout affects your common lookups and joins.
- ID ownership: Decide whether IDs need to be generated independently by services, clients, or offline processes, or whether one database can own allocation.
- Ordering and clocks: Establish whether approximate time ordering is sufficient and how your generator behaves with limited timestamp precision, concurrent generation, or clock differences.
- Information exposed to clients: Decide whether an approximate creation time in a public identifier is acceptable.
Store UUIDs in a compact representation when feasible
RFC 9562 recommends storing a UUID’s underlying binary value in databases where feasible because its textual form takes more space. A UUID is 128 bits; its familiar 36-character text representation is not the same as storing those 128 bits directly. Native UUID and binary handling vary by database, so consider the engine’s physical layout, indexes, and byte ordering rather than assuming one representation behaves identically everywhere.
Check support in your exact database version
PostgreSQL
PostgreSQL 18 documents the native uuid type, which can store UUIDs of any version, and native UUIDv4 and UUIDv7 generation. Its UUID timestamp extraction documentation cautions that an extracted timestamp may not exactly equal generation time, depending on the UUID implementation.

Benchmark the primary key as part of the database design
A primary key affects more than how an ID is generated. InnoDB organizes table data by primary key, and SQL Server documents an automatically created unique primary-key index. Key width and insert distribution can therefore affect storage and index behavior, while foreign keys can carry the key into related tables.
Compare UUIDv7 against the key you would otherwise choose using the same database version, schema, index definitions, data volume, and representative concurrency. Include the reads and joins your application actually performs. Official documentation supports the locality rationale for time-ordered UUIDs, but it does not establish a workload-specific UUIDv4-versus-UUIDv7 benchmark or a universal performance result.

Practical recommendation
Choose UUIDv7 when UUIDs are useful for distributed ID generation, your database can store them efficiently, and a conforming generator is available. Prefer an integer or another key when compact indexes, centralized allocation, strict sequencing, or hiding approximate creation time matters more. In either case, confirm behavior on the exact database version and validate the choice against your own schema and workload.
