To verify an Android APK, first make sure it came from a source you can authenticate, then check that its digital signature matches the publisher’s expected signing certificate. Keep Google Play Protect enabled and accept its scan if prompted. A valid signature or clean scan is useful evidence, but neither by itself proves an app is harmless. If you cannot verify the source or expected signer, do not install the file.
Start by verifying where the APK came from
Prefer the app developer’s official website or its official app-store listing. Confirm that the download is the intended app and version. A familiar app name or logo is not enough: a malicious APK can imitate them.
If the publisher provides a checksum or signing fingerprint, get the expected value through a separate trusted channel—for example, an official publisher channel you already trust. A checksum posted only beside the APK on the same download page or mirror does not independently establish who published the file.
Understand what an APK signature tells you
Android requires APKs to be digitally signed before they can be installed or updated. A valid signature supports the conclusion that the package verifies under the signing key and has not been changed in a way that breaks the signature. Android also uses signing keys to help ensure that updates match the key associated with an installed app. See Android’s app-signing documentation.

Signature validity is not the same as publisher identity. To establish that the signer is the developer you intended, compare the certificate or fingerprint with a value the developer publishes through a trusted route. And even a correctly signed app is not necessarily safe: the signature does not prove that its behavior is harmless.
Account for Google Play App Signing
For apps distributed through Google Play App Signing, Google uses the app signing key to sign APKs delivered to users. The developer may use a separate upload key to submit releases. As a result, the developer’s upload certificate is not necessarily the certificate you should expect on a Play-distributed APK. Compare against the expected distribution signer, not an assumed match to the upload key.

Check signature validity with apksigner
For a technical check, use apksigner, included in Android SDK Build Tools. Its documented command form is:
apksigner verify [options] app.apkReplace app.apk with the APK’s path and add any options needed for your check. A successful verification means the signature verifies for the Android platform versions supported by that APK. It does not identify the signer as the publisher you intended; compare the signer certificate or fingerprint with a trusted publisher reference. See the apksigner documentation.

Do not edit or repackage the APK after checking it. Changes made after signing invalidate the signature.
Run Google Play Protect’s scan
Leave Google Play Protect enabled and accept its offered scan before installing an unfamiliar sideloaded app. Google says Play Protect scans apps from outside Google Play as well as apps from the store. For an app it has not seen before, the install-time flow may ask to send app information to Google for scanning. Details are in Google Play Protect Help.

A clean result is an additional screening signal, not a guarantee that the APK is safe or that it came from the intended publisher. Google reports that Play Protect scans 200 billion Android apps daily; the year is not stated on the reviewed overview, and that service-wide activity figure says nothing conclusive about an individual APK.

Android requires you to opt in before installing apps from outside Google Play. On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, that permission applies to the particular source app that starts the installation, such as your browser or file manager. Allow only the source needed for this install, then revoke its permission when it is no longer needed. This setting permits installation; it does not verify the APK’s authenticity. Know what optional checks do—and do not do
Code transparency
For apps distributed as Android App Bundles, code transparency is an optional way for a user or developer to check whether DEX files and native libraries match hashes in a developer-signed transparency file. The public key must itself come from a trusted channel. This check does not cover resources, assets, the manifest, or other non-code files. Android does not verify code transparency at install time; APK signing remains the mechanism Android uses for installation verification. See Android’s code transparency documentation.
Play Integrity
Play Integrity is primarily a developer integration. An app’s backend can use its verdicts to assess whether requests come from an unmodified app binary installed by Google Play. It is not a general-purpose consumer scanner for arbitrary APK files. See Play Integrity documentation.

- Install only when: you can authenticate the source, identify the intended app and version, and—when checking the signature—match its signer to a trusted expected value. Accept Play Protect’s scan if offered.
- Do not install when: the source is untrusted, the publisher or expected signer cannot be verified, or the checks produce an unexpected result. Do not bypass a Play Protect warning as a routine workaround.
