Yes, secrets and deleted code can remain accessible after removal—but GitHub Code Search is not a complete index of every commit. Code Search covers repository code on default branches and has indexing limits. Separately, GitHub Secret Scanning checks all branches’ Git history for supported credential types. Forks and some cached pull-request views can also retain material. If a credential was exposed, revoke or rotate it first; removing it from a repository is not a substitute.

What “indexing GitHub history” means

Three different things are often conflated: searching repository code, scanning commit history for credentials, and copies of commits or references that persist outside the current branch. They have different scopes, so a deleted string may be detected by one system without being publicly searchable in another.

System or copy What it covers What that means for deleted content
GitHub Code Search Code on repository default branches, subject to indexing exclusions and limits. GitHub documents its scope and limitations. It is not a full search of every commit, branch, or deleted file. A search miss does not prove a string never existed.
GitHub Secret Scanning Git history across all branches for supported hardcoded credential types. GitHub describes the scanner’s scope. This is credential detection, not a public index of arbitrary deleted code.
Forks Commits copied into forks. GitHub says a commit in a fork remains accessible until the fork owner removes it or deletes the fork. See GitHub’s sensitive-data removal guidance.
Pull-request cached views and references Some cached views and references associated with pull requests. GitHub Support may permanently remove qualifying sensitive data, but this is a limited process, not a guarantee of global erasure. Review the eligibility and request guidance.

Can someone find a secret after you delete it?

Possibly. Deleting a file from the current branch does not establish that earlier commits, other branches, forks, or pull-request references no longer contain it. Meanwhile, Code Search is scoped to default-branch code, and GitHub documents exclusions such as vendored or generated files, empty or oversized files, binary or non-UTF-8 files, and very large repositories. Results may also be non-exhaustive. Consequently, a search result can help locate exposed text, but no result is not proof that the secret is safe or was never committed.

Secret Scanning is a separate mechanism: GitHub says it scans the entire Git history on all branches for supported hardcoded credentials, including API keys, passwords, tokens, and other known secret types. That does not mean every deleted file or arbitrary string is publicly indexed or searchable.

What to do if you committed a credential

  1. Revoke or rotate it immediately. Contact the credential provider as needed and confirm that the old credential is inactive. GitHub’s Secret Scanning guidance says: “When you receive an alert, rotate the affected credential immediately to prevent unauthorized access.”
  2. Identify the exposure. Establish the credential type, owner, repository, and locations where it appeared. If Secret Scanning is enabled and produces an alert, its location details can help.
  3. Decide whether to rewrite history. Removing the secret from history may reduce further exposure, but coordinate with collaborators first: rewriting history changes commit references and can disrupt shared work. It also does not remove copies already present in forks.
  4. Address remaining copies. Ask fork owners to remove the affected commit or delete the fork. For qualifying sensitive data in pull-request cached views or references, use GitHub Support’s process described in its removal guidance.

Does a clean search or rewritten history prove the code is gone?

No. A clean Code Search result only tells you that the string was not returned under that search’s scope and limits; it does not certify that the string never existed or that all copies have disappeared. A successful history rewrite likewise cannot remove a commit from someone else’s fork by itself.

GitHub’s cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed timeframe for Code Search to drop deleted or rewritten content. Nor does it promise universal erasure of every surviving copy or third-party cache. Treat search cleanup and history rewriting as additional steps after credential revocation, not proof that an exposed credential remains safe.
