If you already know basic programming, C can be a direct next step; if you are new to programming altogether, expect its explicit pointers and memory responsibilities to make the learning curve steeper.
Decide whether to start with C
Your programming background matters. The GNU C Language Manual says people who understand basic programming concepts can read it sequentially to learn C. For someone entirely new to programming, it recommends first learning a language with automatic garbage collection and no explicit pointers, because C requires careful attention to memory use. That is the manual’s recommendation, not a rule that beginners cannot start with C.
If you choose C as your first language, plan to give pointers and memory management deliberate study rather than treating them as minor details. If you already understand ideas such as variables, conditions, loops, and functions, you can focus more directly on how C expresses them.
Set up a compiler and editor
C source code must be compiled before it can run. You need a compiler and a way to write and save source files; the exact installation steps depend on your operating system and on any course or project you are following. Microsoft Learn’s C documentation includes a command-line compilation tutorial and links to information about the compiler, tools, language reference, and runtime library.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose an environment that matches your course or project where possible. If its instructions specify a compiler, operating system, or standard setting, use those rather than assuming another setup will behave identically.
Write, compile, and change a first program
Begin with a very small program that prints a message. Compile it, run it, then make a small change—such as editing the message—and repeat the process. This gives you a practical loop to use as you learn: edit source code, compile, read any errors, and run the result.
When compilation fails, check that you saved the file, are compiling the intended file, and followed the command or IDE steps for your chosen toolchain. Treat compiler messages as clues about what to inspect, not as proof that you need to rewrite the whole program.

Learn the language in manageable stages
A useful progression is to learn how a small program is built before moving into C’s more demanding work with data and memory. This is a practical study sequence, not a formally established curriculum; adjust it to match your course or project.
Types, expressions, and control flow
Start with the basic building blocks: declarations and types, expressions, and how values are used. Then practice decisions and repetition with conditional statements and loops. Write short examples that change one idea at a time so you can connect the code to its behavior.
Functions
Learn to group work into functions and to pass information between them. Practice calling a function, supplying inputs, and using its result before combining several functions into a larger program.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Arrays, strings, and pointers
Next study arrays and strings, then pointers. These topics are related to how C programs work with data in memory, so take time to understand what a pointer refers to and how it is used. Do not treat pointer syntax as something to memorize without understanding the data it represents.
Memory management and the standard library
Continue into memory management and the standard library. Use library facilities where they fit instead of assuming every operation needs to be implemented from scratch. The cppreference C reference organizes material across the language and library, including memory management, strings, and input/output, making it useful when you need to look up a construct.
Use tutorials and references for different jobs
A paced tutorial or course can guide you through concepts in an order suitable for learning. A reference manual is better for checking how a particular language feature or library facility works; it may not explain every idea in the sequence an absolute beginner needs.

The GNU C Language Manual presents a sequential route for readers who already know basic programming. cppreference is a broad language and library reference. Use them accordingly: follow a learning path to build understanding, then consult references when code raises a specific question.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Follow the C standard required by your course or project
C has multiple standards, and compiler behavior can include extensions beyond standard C. GCC’s documentation on C dialect options reports that C23 was published in 2024 as ISO/IEC 9899:2024, explains ways to select C standards in GCC, and notes that GCC can provide extensions by default.
Those details are specific to GCC; they do not establish identical C23 support across compilers and operating systems. Follow the compiler and standard settings specified by your course or project. When using a GCC-specific flag or extension, identify it as GCC-specific rather than assuming all compilers accept it.

Build small projects to consolidate what you learn
Once you can compile and run short examples, make small projects that exercise one new concept at a time. A project can give a reason to use functions, arrays, strings, or input/output, but keep its scope small enough that you can understand the code you have written. When you meet an unfamiliar construct, look it up in a reference and then try a minimal example of your own.
Should you buy a C book?
A physical book is optional: the learning path can begin with online documentation and compiler materials. The C Programming Language, Second Edition, by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie is a relevant title to consider, but its existence alone does not establish that it is the best first book for an absolute beginner or that a particular edition or format is currently available. Before buying a C programming book, compare the edition, its fit for your experience level, and the format you prefer.
