Emojis look different on iPhone and Android because Unicode standardizes the character or sequence being sent—not a single picture that every device must display. The receiving phone and app render that text using their own emoji artwork and software, so details such as expression, shape, color, and orientation can vary. If the receiver does not support an emoji yet, it may show a box or another fallback instead.
Unicode standardizes the emoji, not its picture
Unicode provides a shared text system so devices can exchange emoji consistently. A simple emoji may be one character; a combined emoji can be a sequence of several characters. The standard defines which characters and sequences count as emoji and includes relevant presentation and modifier data, but it does not prescribe one exact colored illustration for every platform. The Unicode Consortium says it is “not a designer nor purveyor of emoji images.” Unicode’s emoji FAQ explains the distinction.
This shared system grew out of a practical interoperability problem: Japanese mobile carriers had overlapping emoji sets and incompatible encoding extensions, making messages unreliable across services. Unicode’s history records emoji on Japanese mobile phones in 1999, explicitly emoji-intended characters added in 2009, and a further set added in 2010. Unicode Technical Standard #51 describes that history and the standard’s current role.
Why the same emoji has different designs
After a message arrives, the receiving software draws the character or sequence with an emoji font or another rendering method. Apple, Google, and other vendors create their own artwork, so they can make different choices about facial expressions, proportions, colors, or the direction an object faces. Google’s explainer puts it plainly: “Some emoji on iPhones look different than they do on Pixel phones.” Google’s explanation of emoji and missing-glyph boxes also describes emoji as font characters.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
An ordinary text message carries the encoded character or sequence, not a snapshot of the sender’s emoji artwork. The recipient’s device or app supplies the rendering. This is why the same incoming emoji can look different even when the underlying text is the same.
Why emoji can look different within one platform
“iPhone” or “Android” alone does not identify a single renderer. Software version, the receiving app, and whether that app uses system emoji support or a custom implementation can all affect what appears. Google’s Android policy explicitly accounts for apps with custom emoji implementations, so it is not safe to assume every Android app uses Google’s Noto Emoji or that every phone on a platform displays identical art.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
A Google post published July 17, 2026 describes a Google-specific design update to Noto 3D emoji; it is an example of vendor artwork evolving, not a change to Unicode’s role. Google’s Noto 3D emoji post discusses that update.
What text and emoji presentation mean
Some characters can be shown in either text or emoji style. Unicode’s variation selector U+FE0F requests emoji presentation, typically colored, while U+FE0E requests text presentation, typically monochrome. The result can still depend on the platform and app; these selectors do not force every renderer to produce identical artwork. Unicode’s FAQ covers presentation selectors.

Why a box appears instead of an emoji
A missing-glyph box or fallback is different from ordinary design variation. It usually means the receiving device or app does not support the character or the complete sequence yet. New emoji support reaches users through vendors’ software release cycles, and app support can also be a factor. If a specific message shows a box, updating the operating system and the app may help, but the exact remedy depends on which component lacks support.
For apps running on Android 12 and later, Google Play policy says apps must support the latest Unicode Emoji. Apps with custom emoji implementations have a four-month implementation window after a new Unicode Emoji release. This is an Android-app policy, not a rule that applies to iPhone or every operating system. Google Play’s Android Emoji Policy sets out the requirement.

How to compare a specific emoji fairly
There is no single rendering matrix that establishes how every iPhone and Android device displays every emoji. To make a useful comparison, identify the exact emoji and check the relevant versions and app:
- Character support: Does each operating-system and app version support the character or full sequence?
- Renderer: Does the app use the system emoji font or its own implementation?
- Presentation: Is the character requested in text or emoji style, where variation selectors apply?
- Artwork: Compare the vendors’ actual shapes, expressions, colors, and orientation for that example.
Without the emoji name, operating-system versions, app versions, and date checked, a visual comparison should not be generalized to all iPhones or Android phones.
