If you are new to frontend development, learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript first. Then decide whether your first project needs server-side rendering, static generation, or full-stack features, or whether a simpler client-rendered setup will do.
Start with the web basics and your project
Frameworks build on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; they do not replace the need to understand them. Vue’s introduction advises newcomers to grasp these basics before jumping into a framework: Vue documentation. Next.js also expects familiarity with those fundamentals and React, so it is not the most direct first stop if you have never built a frontend: Next.js App Router: Getting Started.
Before choosing a tool, answer three questions:
- Do I understand enough HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build a basic page?
- Is this a small interface that can run mainly in the browser, or does it need server-rendered pages, static generation, or full-stack features?
- Do I want to choose routing, data fetching, and build conventions myself, or start with more decisions already made?
The answers matter more than a generic claim that one framework is easiest. A personal site, an interactive single-page app, and a full-stack application can call for different approaches.
Compare the choices that affect your first project
| Decision | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Project shape | Is it a mostly static or client-rendered interface, a single-page application, a content site, or a full-stack app? |
| Rendering | Will rendering in the browser be sufficient, or do you need static generation, server-side rendering, or a mix? |
| Built-in structure | Do you want a framework to provide conventions and solutions for routing and data fetching, or do you prefer to choose those pieces yourself? |
| Prerequisites | Plan on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript foundations; Next.js additionally assumes React familiarity. |
| Learning route | Choose an official tutorial and starter that match the project and features you actually need. |
These are practical decision axes, not a ranking. More built-in structure can reduce early choices, while a lighter setup can be simpler for a small project that does not need server features.

Vue with Vite for a client-rendered project
Vue describes itself as a progressive framework built on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with use cases ranging from enhancing static HTML to single-page applications and server-rendered or statically generated sites: Vue Introduction. Its Quick Start recommends the standard Vite setup when server-side rendering is not needed. If you do need SSR or other framework features, Vue recommends considering a Vue framework such as Nuxt: Vue Quick Start.
This makes the decision concrete: for a small browser-focused interface, begin with Vue’s Vite setup; do not add an SSR framework just because it exists. Move to a framework when the project’s requirements justify its additional capabilities.

React with a framework for a new app or website
React’s current guidance recommends starting a new app or website with a framework, listing Next.js App Router and React Router as options: React: Creating a React App. The recommended frameworks support client-side rendering, single-page applications, and static generation, with server rendering available where it makes sense.
React also explains the trade-off in starting from scratch: it gives flexibility, but you must select solutions for concerns such as routing and data fetching. Follow the framework route if you want those choices integrated; start from scratch only if you want to make and maintain those decisions yourself.

Next.js when you know React and need its broader framework capabilities
Next.js defines itself as a React framework for full-stack web applications: Next.js Docs. Its getting-started material assumes React knowledge alongside HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, so learn React first if you are starting from zero. Next.js has an App Router and a Pages Router; the App Router is the newer option, while the Pages Router remains supported. A beginner does not need to learn both routers to start.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make a choice, then finish one small project
- Write down what you are building. Identify whether it is mainly a browser interface or whether it needs server-side rendering, static generation, or full-stack behavior.
- Check your prerequisites. If HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are still unfamiliar, build those foundations before adding framework concepts. If considering Next.js, include React in that preparation.
- Pick the simplest route that fits. For example, Vue’s Vite setup is the documented simpler option when SSR is unnecessary; React’s current new-app guidance points readers to a framework.
- Use the official starter and tutorial for that route. Build one small, complete project before reassessing. Switching based only on unsourced popularity claims does not establish that another tool better fits your needs.
Angular and Svelte are also frameworks a learner may encounter, but the official overview material available here does not support detailed comparisons of their learning curves or features. Choose between them only after checking their current documentation against the same project requirements above.
