The best alternative to WordPress depends on what your website needs to do. For a store, start with Shopify; for visual design control, consider Webflow; for a straightforward hosted business site, compare Wix and Squarespace; and for publishing with memberships or newsletters, look at Ghost. Drupal and Joomla! are options for people comfortable with more technical setup. Before switching, check what content and data you can move: changing platforms can make templates, features, and customer information difficult to transfer.

How to choose a WordPress alternative

Start with the site’s main job—not a feature checklist. A portfolio, service-business site, publication, and online store have different needs. Then weigh these factors:

  • Editing workflow: Do you want templates and drag-and-drop editing, or more control over page layouts and publishing?
  • Commerce needs: If selling is central, look for product, payment, inventory, order, and customer-management tools rather than assuming a general-purpose builder will be enough.
  • Technical responsibility: Hosted builders manage the platform environment; open-source options such as Drupal and Joomla! can involve more setup and configuration.
  • Portability: Identify what can be exported or imported—such as posts, images, templates, customer data, and other features—before moving. TechRadar notes that transferring templates, features, and customer data between builders may be difficult or impossible. Check the specific vendors’ current export and import options.
  • Total cost: Compare the current plan and billing interval, region, transaction fees, domain costs, add-ons, and migration work. Wix says its price comparisons vary by billing cycle and region; the sources here do not establish a complete current price comparison across platforms.

Which alternatives fit which websites?

Platform Best fit What to know
Wix Small-business and freelancer sites where accessible setup and drag-and-drop editing matter Hosted builder with templates and assets. Webflow’s comparison says its free-site tier displays banner advertising and that its design options may not meet more advanced needs.
Squarespace Small businesses and service providers seeking a hosted builder and polished templates Webflow describes it as straightforward and notes built-in analytics and a comparatively small extension selection. TechRadar lists ecommerce and blogging features but cautions against assuming it is best for a massive product inventory.
Webflow Design-led sites that need visual layout control and CMS publishing Its vendor guide describes a visual-first platform with managed hosting, a composable CMS, integrations, interactions, and team workflows. These are vendor descriptions, not independent evidence that it is superior to other builders.
Shopify Online stores where commerce operations are central Store themes, payment and customer-data management, sales dashboards, inventory management, and order processing are among the capabilities described by Webflow and TechRadar. A basic informational site may not need its commerce-oriented feature set.
Ghost Blogging, memberships, and newsletters Listed by Webflow as a publishing-focused alternative; it is covered less deeply in the available comparisons than the four platforms above.
Drupal or Joomla! Sites whose owners want open-source software and can handle more technical configuration Webflow describes Drupal as deeply customizable and aimed at experienced developers, and Joomla! as an open-source platform with an extension library and configuration overhead.
HubSpot Content Hub Teams seeking alignment between a CMS and CRM Listed by Webflow as a category alternative; the comparisons do not establish a detailed feature or cost assessment here.

When Wix or Squarespace makes sense

Wix and Squarespace are hosted, general-purpose builders, making them candidates for a business or service site that does not need a highly specialized publishing or commerce workflow. Wix’s drag-and-drop approach may suit someone prioritizing accessible editing, while Squarespace is a reasonable comparison for those drawn to polished templates. Those descriptions come from Webflow’s vendor comparison; TechRadar also highlights Squarespace’s templates and blogging and ecommerce features.

Check the actual design controls, extensions, and selling tools against your requirements before committing. In particular, don’t treat a small extension selection or a limitation for very large inventories as a universal verdict: whether it matters depends on the site’s needs.

When Webflow is a better match

Consider Webflow if you want more direct visual control over layouts and a CMS-oriented publishing workflow. Webflow’s own guide describes managed hosting, integrations, interactions, and team workflows as part of its offering. Those capabilities make it relevant to design-led sites, but they do not establish that it is the best choice for every team or the easiest platform to learn.

When Shopify is the right kind of alternative

Choose Shopify as a candidate when the site is primarily a store and day-to-day commerce matters: products, payments, inventory, orders, and customer management. Webflow and TechRadar both describe it in commerce-first terms. If the site only needs a few informational pages and no substantial store operations, compare whether those commerce features justify the platform’s fit for your project.

Publishing-focused and open-source options

Ghost for publications

Ghost is a category match for blogs, memberships, and newsletters, according to Webflow’s comparison. Consider it when publishing and audience monetization are the center of the site rather than a secondary feature of a business website.

Drupal and Joomla! for technical control

Drupal and Joomla! are open-source alternatives for owners prepared for additional setup and configuration. Webflow characterizes Drupal as deeply customizable and intended for experienced developers; it describes Joomla! as offering an extension library with configuration overhead. Plan for the technical work involved instead of treating either as a no-maintenance hosted builder.

Webflow also lists HubSpot Content Hub for teams that want their CMS and CRM aligned. The available comparisons provide less detail on this option, so verify its current capabilities and fit directly with the provider before choosing it.

Plan a migration before you switch

  1. List what the current site contains: Record pages, posts, media, forms, store products, customer information, integrations, and any design features you rely on.
  2. Check the destination’s import and export support: Confirm which of those items can move and what must be rebuilt. TechRadar warns that templates, features, and customer data can be difficult or impossible to transfer between builders.
  3. Test the new workflow with representative content: Recreate a typical page or post, and—if relevant—a product and its order flow, before committing the whole site.
  4. Compare the full ongoing cost: Check the vendor’s current prices for your region and billing interval, plus transaction fees, domains, add-ons, and any migration work. Wix specifically notes that its prices vary by region and billing cycle.
  5. Make the switch only after confirming the essentials: Verify that the destination supports the content, operations, and integrations the site actually needs.

What the comparisons do—and do not—establish

The platform descriptions above draw on vendor-authored comparisons from Webflow, Wix, and Shopify, alongside TechRadar’s independent website-builder guide. Vendor descriptions are useful for identifying intended use cases, but they are not independent proof of superiority. The comparisons support matching platforms to needs; they do not provide hands-on tests here or a complete, like-for-like current price comparison. Features, plans, integrations, and pricing can change, so confirm live details with the platform before migrating.
