Choose JSZip if your project benefits from its archive-object API and its documented ZIP limitations fit your files. Choose fflate if you need streaming or asynchronous/threaded operations, want to evaluate a smaller package, or process many small entries. Neither is a universal speed winner: benchmark the library with your actual files, runtime, and output requirements.

JSZip vs. fflate at a glance

Need What the documentation or benchmark indicates Practical choice
An archive-object workflow JSZip provides an archive-oriented API and asynchronous methods. Its async result generation retains the full result in memory. JSZip limitations and JSZip API. Consider JSZip when this API fits your project and its format constraints are acceptable.
Streaming or threaded operations fflate documents streaming and asynchronous/threaded APIs, alongside DEFLATE, GZIP, Zlib, and ZIP support. fflate README. Consider fflate, then verify memory use and backpressure behavior in your application.

Many small entries In one Node benchmark, fflate performed better than JSZip on a workload of 5,000 files of roughly 2 KB each. zip.js performance benchmark. Treat this as a reason to test fflate, not as a forecast for another runtime or workload.

How their APIs and memory behavior differ

JSZip: work with an archive object

JSZip uses an archive-object model with asynchronous APIs. Its documentation warns that methods such as generateAsync hold the full generated result in memory. That can be a concern when creating large archives or running in a memory-constrained browser.

JSZip also provides stream-oriented helpers, including StreamHelper. Those facilities mean it is inaccurate to say that JSZip cannot stream. They do not remove the need to manage incremental output, backpressure, and memory carefully in a large-archive workflow. See the limitations documentation.

fflate: streaming and asynchronous options

fflate documents ZIP support as well as DEFLATE, GZIP, and Zlib, with streaming and asynchronous/threaded operations. Those options can suit applications that need incremental processing or want to use asynchronous work. Check the chosen API against your runtime and integration requirements in the fflate README.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Streaming is not by itself a guarantee of low memory use: the result depends on how data flows through the application, whether the consumer keeps chunks, and how backpressure and concurrency are handled. Measure the full workflow rather than just the compression call.

ZIP compatibility: check required features before choosing

JSZip’s limitations documentation says encrypted and multi-volume archives are unsupported. It also describes ZIP64 loading as subject to size constraints. If your input archives use those features, test them directly and confirm that the library’s supported behavior matches your requirements before building around JSZip.

JSZip handles UTF-8 natively for text and filenames. Other filename encodings may require custom encoding or decoding callbacks. Its documentation also cautions that reading and regenerating an archive does not reproduce the original exactly: metadata may be discarded, and directory entries may be added. If your application must preserve archive metadata or non-UTF-8 filenames, validate the round trip using representative files. These constraints are detailed in the JSZip limitations page.

The cited fflate README documents supported compression formats and APIs, but that alone does not establish compatibility with every ZIP feature or archive encountered in production. Confirm any required edge cases against its documentation and your own test files.

What the available benchmark does—and does not—show

A benchmark published by a zip.js maintainer compares multiple libraries in Node, including compression, decompression, and a 256 MB disk-to-disk streaming test. It reports three-run medians for most head-to-head cases, uses fresh processes, and sets each library to level 6. The benchmark notes that compression levels are not equivalent between implementations, so “level 6” is not a guarantee of identical settings or output. The figures are specific to that setup and should not be treated as predictions for another machine, version, runtime, or input.

Benchmark workload fflate JSZip How to interpret it
5,000 files of roughly 2 KB each; compression time and peak-memory delta 276 ms; 103 MB 834 ms; 261 MB fflate was faster and had a lower measured memory delta in this Node benchmark workload.
20 MB incompressible data; compression time 296 ms 855 ms This result belongs to the benchmark’s specific data and configuration.
256 MB disk-to-disk streaming; time and peak-memory delta 12,394 ms; 42 MB 22,243 ms; 74 MB The benchmark reports that all listed libraries stream in this test; output sizes differ.

All figures in the table come from the same zip.js maintainer benchmark, accessed in 2026; its publication date is not stated on the accessed page. The benchmark is a single, project-produced comparison, not an independent or industry-wide ranking. In particular, the streaming result does not contradict JSZip’s warning about full-result memory use with async generation: the benchmark describes a streaming scenario, not every JSZip workflow.

How to compare them in your project

Use a controlled benchmark when speed, memory, or output size matters. Keep the inputs and required output behavior constant, and record the conditions alongside the results.

  1. Use representative archives. Include the entry counts, file sizes, compressibility, and archive features your application actually handles.
  2. Match the operation. Compare compression with compression and decompression with decompression; test the same streaming or non-streaming workflow on both sides.
  3. Record output requirements. Compare compression settings and resulting archive size, and check whether each result meets your compatibility and metadata needs.
  4. Measure the whole workload. Record elapsed time and peak memory, including the cost of consuming or storing output chunks.
  5. Test the target runtime separately. The cited head-to-head figures are Node-based; they do not establish browser performance. Measure in the browser, server, or other environment you will deploy.
  6. Include concurrency and backpressure. If production processes several archives at once or writes to a slower consumer, reproduce that behavior rather than extrapolating from one isolated operation.

This approach follows the workload-specific nature of the published benchmark; its results also show why a single speed claim cannot settle every comparison.

Which library should you use?

Choose JSZip when its API is the better fit

  • Your project already uses JSZip, or its archive-object workflow is the natural fit.
  • The archive formats and size constraints you need are compatible with its documented limitations.
  • You can manage the memory implications of the specific API you use, especially for generated output.

Choose fflate when streaming, footprint, or workload tests favor it

  • You need its documented streaming or asynchronous/threaded operations.
  • A smaller dependency is important, and your own production bundle confirms the expected benefit.
  • Your workload resembles cases where fflate performed well, or your measurements show a practical advantage.

Pause and verify when archives have special requirements

If encryption, multi-volume archives, ZIP64, non-UTF-8 names, or faithful metadata round-tripping matter, test the exact files and operations before selecting a library. JSZip’s documented limits make this check particularly important; the fflate README alone should not be read as confirmation of support for every special ZIP feature.
