The grasp depends on how the thumb opposes the fingers, whether digits move independently, how they spread and flex, and how the mechanism responds when it touches an object.
What “four-finger” means in a robot hand
In an anthropomorphic layout, “four-finger” usually means four non-thumb digits plus a thumb. It does not specify the number of actuators, joints, or independently controlled movements. Those details vary by design: one soft hand places an added finger directly opposite the thumb, while the mini X-hand paper describes synergistically driven fingers and an independently driven thumb.
That distinction matters because a hand’s outline is only a starting point. The mechanism and control determine which contacts it can make and how precisely it can shape them.
What changes the way a robot hand grasps
Thumb opposition shapes the contact
Thumb opposition is the thumb’s ability to reach and orient against other digits. Its range affects which finger pads can meet, the direction in which they apply force, and whether the hand can reposition an object after grasping. Human grasp classifications treat thumb position and opposition direction as important variables, not minor details. A robot thumb with fewer degrees of freedom or less opposition than a human thumb may therefore support a different set of grasps. Feix and colleagues’ grasp taxonomy describes these dimensions.

Actuation determines how much control the fingers have
An underactuated finger has fewer independent actuators than degrees of freedom. When it closes, the object’s shape and the locations where the finger first makes contact help determine its final posture and force distribution. This can let the finger conform passively to varied objects, but the controller has less direct control over each joint and contact force than it would with a fully actuated finger. Adaptation here is a mechanical response to contact, not evidence of human-like intelligence. Work on underactuated robotic hands discusses this kind of mechanism.
Finger spreading changes reach and contact orientation
Abduction and adduction—the spreading and bringing together of fingers—change a hand’s effective span and the orientation of its contacts. A study of abduction and adduction at the metacarpophalangeal joints of the four non-thumb fingers reported improvements in grasp-size and force measures, as well as in simulated grasp quality and robotic-hand success measures. Those findings apply to the study’s methods and test conditions; they are not a universal effect size for four-finger hands. The study’s results concern this particular movement and evaluation.

A fourth finger can add a useful contact point
In one four-finger soft-hand design, the added digit directly opposes the thumb. Its authors report that this arrangement improves enclosure and adds contact force near the center; they also describe a two-finger pinch option for small objects. These are findings about that configuration, not proof that every four-finger design grips more securely or pinches better than every three-finger design. The soft-hand paper describes the mechanism and its reported grasp options.
How robot grasps differ from the human grasp repertoire
People vary hand posture to suit the object and task. The GRASP taxonomy identifies 33 stable, static, one-hand grasp types; when object shape and size are excluded, it groups them into 17 broader configurations. A separate study recorded kinematics and muscle activity from 40 healthy participants performing 20 grasps, then grouped the movements into five broad categories. These different classification approaches show why human grasping is more varied than simply opening, closing, and holding a hand. The GRASP taxonomy and the participant study use distinct methods and should not be treated as one combined measurement.

Robot designs often trade independent, fine-grained finger movement for mechanical simplicity, robustness, fewer actuators, or passive adaptation. Some use coordinated finger synergies to cover a broad set of grasps; others focus on conforming around objects. The mini X-hand authors report reproducing 29 of the 33 GRASP types in their evaluation. That result belongs to their particular hand and protocol; it is not a general score for four-finger robot hands. The mini X-hand paper reports its design and evaluation.
Grasping is not the same as in-hand manipulation
Closing around an object and holding it does not establish that a hand can rotate or reposition it without putting it down. In-hand manipulation requires changing an object’s pose after the initial grasp. Thumb mobility and independent finger control are especially relevant because they help the hand alter contacts and apply forces in a controlled way. A hand that reliably encloses an object may still have limited ability to turn it in the palm. The mini X-hand work addresses grasp types for its design; grasp-type coverage should not be mistaken for a universal measure of manipulation ability.

How to compare two robot-hand designs
When comparing specific hands, look at the mechanism and the evaluation rather than counting digits alone:
- Thumb opposition: Which digits can the thumb reach, and how can it orient its pad?
- Finger independence: Can each digit be controlled separately, or do fingers share a drive or move as a synergy?
- Response to contact: Does the hand passively conform to an object, and how much control does it retain over the resulting contacts and forces?
- Contact layout and span: Does the fourth digit provide a useful opposing contact? Can the fingers spread to accommodate different object sizes?
- Demonstrated grasp repertoire: Which grasps were actually tested, and under what taxonomy or protocol?
- In-hand manipulation: Can the hand change the object’s pose after grasping, or does the demonstration show only lifting or holding?
Success rates, grasp-type counts, and payload claims from unrelated papers are not directly comparable unless they share a benchmark and test conditions.
