A client can use LDAP to access Active Directory, but the terms are not interchangeable. Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) adds domain identity, authentication, and management capabilities that LDAP itself does not provide.
LDAP and Active Directory are different kinds of things
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) defines how a client communicates with a directory service to work with directory information. Active Directory is Microsoft’s directory-service system. The simplest useful distinction is: LDAP is an access protocol; Active Directory is a system that can use that protocol.
Microsoft’s definition is explicit: “LDAP cannot create directories or specify how a directory service operates.” Microsoft’s LDAP overview describes the protocol, not a particular directory server’s features.
Think of LDAP as a formal interface a client can use to ask a directory service for information. The analogy is limited: the interface does not determine what features the service behind it supports.

What LDAP does
LDAP lets compatible clients perform directory operations, such as reading or querying entries and, where permitted, creating, modifying, or deleting objects. Directory objects contain attributes and values and are commonly arranged hierarchically. The server and its configuration determine which operations and data are available.
LDAP can be part of an authentication workflow, but it is not itself a complete identity platform or a guarantee of a particular authentication method. An application using LDAP depends on the directory service it connects to for the service’s behavior and capabilities.
What Active Directory adds
Microsoft’s Active Directory system includes both Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) and Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS). Both can be accessed through LDAP, but they serve different purposes. Microsoft’s protocol overview describes AD DS as the domain-oriented service and AD LDS as a directory service primarily intended for application software storage.

AD DS: domains and identity
AD DS provides domain naming contexts and holds account information for network users. It organizes a forest into domains and organizational units, and provides identity, authentication, authorization information, and management functions. Its documented capabilities include Kerberos support for domain-joined clients, automatic certificate enrollment, and administrator-configured policy settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Active Directory objects are not limited to user accounts. The service can store many kinds of information as objects with attributes and values. Microsoft also describes Active Directory as a distributed directory service whose contents replicate among domain controllers. These are Active Directory capabilities, not features guaranteed by LDAP.
AD LDS: application directory storage
AD LDS offers LDAP-accessible directory storage for applications without AD DS domain naming contexts. It is an Active Directory service mode, but it should not be treated as equivalent to AD DS for domain identity and domain services.

LDAP vs. Active Directory at a glance
| Question | LDAP | Active Directory (especially AD DS) |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A protocol for accessing directory information. | A Microsoft directory-service system; AD DS is its domain-oriented service. |
| What does it provide? | A way for clients to issue directory operations to a service. | Directory storage and behavior; AD DS also provides domain identity, authentication, authorization information, and management capabilities. |
| Does it define domain features? | No. LDAP does not specify the full behavior of the directory service. | AD DS provides domain-oriented features; capabilities differ between AD DS and AD LDS. |
| Does it support LDAP? | It is LDAP. | Yes. Active Directory services are accessible through LDAP, and AD DS also supports other protocols and services. |
| When is it relevant? | When an application needs a protocol to access a directory; the server determines available behavior. | When an organization needs Microsoft domain services, or when an application needs AD LDS directory storage. |
Comparison based on Microsoft’s Active Directory protocol overview and Microsoft’s LDAP definition.
Does Active Directory use LDAP?
Yes. LDAP is one way clients access Active Directory. But LDAP is not the whole of Active Directory: AD DS supports additional protocols and domain functions, including Kerberos authentication for domain-joined clients. Using LDAP to query an AD DS directory does not mean LDAP supplies those wider capabilities.

- Choose or configure LDAP access when an application needs to read or work with directory entries. Confirm which operations the target directory permits and which security methods the application supports.
- Use AD DS when the environment needs Microsoft domain services and the associated domain identity, authentication, and management features.
- Consider AD LDS when an application needs LDAP-accessible directory storage but not AD DS domain naming contexts.
These are not mutually exclusive choices: an application can use LDAP to communicate with AD DS or AD LDS. The choice of directory service determines what lies behind the protocol.

Secure LDAP connections carefully
LDAP does not automatically mean an encrypted connection. Microsoft warns that unsigned traffic can be vulnerable to replay and man-in-the-middle attacks, and that simple binds sent in clear text pose a risk. Administrators can configure domain controllers to reject unsigned SASL binds or simple binds over connections not protected by SSL/TLS.
Microsoft’s LDAP channel-binding and signing guidance notes that the updates it describes did not change the default signing and channel-binding policies on existing or new domain controllers. Defaults and effective behavior depend on Windows Server versions and configuration, so check current guidance and the actual environment rather than assuming a policy is enabled.
Ports and LDAPS certificates
Microsoft identifies TCP 389 as the default LDAP port and TCP 636 for LDAPS, which negotiates SSL/TLS when the connection is established. TCP 3269 is the global catalog LDAPS port. These are documented configuration facts, not a guarantee that a given server is listening on those ports.

LDAPS requires a suitable server certificate trusted by connecting clients. Microsoft’s configuration guidance requires a matching private key, Server Authentication usage, and the domain controller’s fully qualified name in the certificate identity. See Microsoft’s LDAPS certificate requirements.
LDAP signing, channel binding, and TLS are distinct security concepts. LDAPS is not a synonym for every secure LDAP configuration; the right setup depends on client support and server policy.
How LDAP relates to Microsoft Entra Domain Services
Some applications depend on LDAP and need directory access in a Microsoft cloud environment. Microsoft documents LDAP authentication in the context of Microsoft Entra Domain Services; that specific scenario does not make LDAP the same thing as Active Directory or make every LDAP application compatible. Review Microsoft’s LDAP authentication guidance for Microsoft Entra ID for the relevant service context.
