You can try Opera Developer without replacing Opera Stable. On Windows, the best-documented way to keep the two installations distinct is Opera’s portable/standalone option, installed in a separate folder. On macOS and Linux, Opera provides Developer packages, but the available instructions do not establish an equivalent standalone setup; check each browser’s data paths after installation.
Download Opera Developer from Opera
Go to Opera’s official download page and choose the Developer package for your operating system. The page lists Developer for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Package types can change, so use the live page rather than relying on a particular installer filename.
Opera’s desktop release announcements have also linked to a Windows portable build. The download page and package options may vary over time.
Choose an installation approach on Windows
If your priority is keeping Developer’s files separate from Stable’s, use the portable/standalone approach rather than assuming a standard installer will isolate browser data. Opera community guidance describes choosing a dedicated install path and selecting “standalone installation” in the installer options. That guidance was posted in 2018, is not current official step-by-step documentation, and the labels or layout may have changed.

Use the standalone option for a separate folder
- Download the Windows Developer package from Opera’s official download page.
- Open the installer and look for its installation options.
- Choose a folder for the Developer installation that is separate from the Stable installation.
- If offered, select “standalone installation,” then complete installation. These steps reflect older community guidance; if the current installer does not show those choices, do not assume another option has the same behavior.
A standalone folder is intended to keep the Developer program and its data apart from the ordinary installation. Verify the actual data paths after launch before moving, copying, or deleting any profile files.
Use the standard installer only if its behavior suits your needs
The consulted sources establish that a Windows portable build is available, but do not document the current standard installer’s exact behavior or interface. If you choose a standard installation, inspect the paths in both browsers rather than assuming their profiles are separate.

Install on macOS or Linux, then verify the paths
Choose the official Developer package for macOS or Linux and install it using the platform’s package instructions. The consulted sources do not establish equivalent current steps for selecting a separate standalone directory or profile on these systems, so do not assume the Windows standalone behavior applies.
After launching Developer, check its data paths; do the same in Stable. Opera Help’s instructions are to enter opera:about/ in the address bar. Note the paths shown for each browser before making any profile changes. If the paths are not distinct and separation matters to you, avoid changing or deleting profile files until you have confirmed how the installations are configured.

Protect your Stable profile
Installing Developer does not require deleting Stable’s profile. Opera’s FAQ recommends backing up Opera files before a clean install. Make a backup before changing profile files, and do not remove a profile just to add Developer.
Know what Developer is for
Opera describes Developer as a channel for experimental features. Its help page warns that experiments can be unstable and may affect security, privacy, or data. Keep Stable available for everyday browsing and treat Developer as an additional testing browser.

Version information is date-specific
Opera’s April 29, 2026 release announcement identifies Developer version 132.0.5883.0 and links downloads for Windows, macOS, and Linux. That is a version cited in that dated announcement, not a claim that it is the latest version now.
