For an MCP server launched over stdio, pass proxy settings only to the child process and, where the client SDK allows it, disable wholesale environment inheritance and explicitly forward the variables the server needs. For a remote HTTP or SSE connection, configure the component making the outbound request—often the MCP client—not the remote server. Proxy variables and their precedence are implementation-specific; MCP does not define a universal proxy configuration.
First identify which process needs the proxy
Proxy configuration belongs to the process that makes the network connection. With stdio, the MCP client starts a local server process, so that child may need proxy variables to reach an upstream service. With remote HTTP/SSE, the MCP client connects to a server over the network, so proxy settings generally belong on the client side.
This distinction is separate from MCP authorization. The MCP specification says HTTP-based implementations should follow its authorization framework, while stdio implementations should retrieve credentials from the environment. A proxy routes traffic; it does not replace transport authorization. The authorization specification also says access tokens must not be placed in URI query strings. For stdio, pass a minimal environment to the child
A child process that inherits its parent’s entire environment may receive unrelated secrets, tokens, and internal configuration along with proxy settings. Environment variables are not hidden from the process that receives them: the MCP server can read them. If the SDK offers control over environment inheritance, disable broad inheritance and explicitly pass only what the server requires.

- Check the server’s documentation. Confirm which proxy variable names it recognizes and whether it defines a precedence order.
- Disable wholesale inheritance if supported. Set the process-launch configuration to avoid copying the parent environment.
- Allowlist the required values. Forward only the documented proxy variables, such as
HTTP_PROXY,HTTPS_PROXY, orNO_PROXY, plus any other environment values the server genuinely needs. - Keep proxy authentication secret. If the proxy URL contains a username or password, inject it through your deployment’s secret-management mechanism rather than committing it to source control or printing it in logs.
- Verify the launched process. Confirm it can reach the intended destination through the proxy, and check that unrelated parent secrets were not forwarded.
The MCP C# SDK documentation demonstrates disabling environment inheritance and selectively adding variables, including proxy variables when needed. That is a documented C# SDK pattern, not a universal MCP API; consult the documentation for the SDK and version you deploy.
For remote HTTP/SSE, configure the client’s outbound requests
When the MCP server is remote, changing the server process environment will not route the client’s connection to it. Configure the client or its HTTP networking layer instead. For example, the MCP Inspector CLI documentation describes HTTPS_PROXY and HTTP_PROXY, including lowercase forms, and NO_PROXY for excluding hosts. It also documents proxy handling for OAuth discovery and token requests made through its shared fetch implementation. That behavior is specific to the Inspector and should not be assumed for other MCP clients.

Keep proxy routing distinct from authentication credentials used to authorize an MCP connection. Follow the client’s and server’s authorization instructions, and do not place access tokens in URL query strings.
Check variable names and precedence for the specific implementation
There is no protocol-wide rule that every MCP server accepts HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY, or lowercase equivalents, or that one variable takes priority over another. The server or client implementation decides what it supports. For instance, the Perplexity MCP README documents its own order: PERPLEXITY_PROXY, then HTTPS_PROXY, then HTTP_PROXY. Do not apply that order to unrelated servers. Check the deployed implementation’s documentation: Perplexity MCP README.

Choose the approach by exposure, compatibility, and policy

MCP security guidance recommends keeping secrets in a secret manager rather than source control and considering egress proxies to enforce network policy in server-side deployments. It does not require a particular secret manager or proxy product. See the MCP security best practices.

If authentication is required, obtain the credential through the deployment’s approved secret-injection mechanism and avoid echoing the resulting value in diagnostics. A placeholder illustrates the shape only; the exact injection method depends on the SDK and deployment.
