Choose SQLDBM when you need to design, reverse-engineer, and communicate database structures visually; choose dbt when you need to build and manage warehouse transformations as SQL code. They address different parts of the data workflow, and some teams can use both: SQLDBM documents an option to export model definitions as dbt YAML.
What is the difference between data modeling and data transformation?
Data modeling describes how data structures relate: entities, tables, and their relationships, from an abstract design through to a physical database schema. SQLDBM is a browser-based environment for conceptual, logical, and physical modeling, with forward and reverse engineering. Its product page describes those modeling capabilities.
Transformation is the work of turning data already in a warehouse into useful, organized outputs. In dbt, a model is a SQL select statement that dbt builds into a warehouse object such as a view or table. The dbt SQL models documentation explains how models are built; dbt also documents testing and model documentation.
In short, SQLDBM centers on designing and understanding the structure, while dbt centers on implementing transformations and managing their lifecycle in code. The distinction is about primary purpose, not an absolute boundary between products.

When should you use SQLDBM?
- You need a visual design surface. Use SQLDBM when diagrams and connected conceptual, logical, and physical views help the team reason about a schema.

- You want model definitions to feed a dbt project. SQLDBM documents Git integration and export of model definitions as dbt YAML. Treat that as a handoff to validate, not a guarantee that exported files will follow every repository’s naming or deployment conventions.

When should you use dbt?
- Your main work is transforming warehouse data. dbt is designed to turn SQL models into warehouse objects, including views and tables.
- You want transformations managed as code. The dbt Developer Hub introduction describes a workflow built around practices such as version control, modularity, CI/CD, testing, and documentation.
- You need repeatable execution and review. Keeping transformation logic in SQL files supports a code-centered workflow in which changes can be tracked and tested as part of project development.
The dbt Developer Hub describes dbt as a way to transform raw warehouse data into trusted data products. That is dbt’s stated product role, not an independent comparison with SQLDBM.

Can SQLDBM and dbt be used together?
Yes. A team can use SQLDBM for visual schema design and stakeholder communication, then use dbt for warehouse transformation code. SQLDBM’s documented export of model definitions as dbt YAML provides an integration path. It does not establish that every export will fit a team’s project structure without adjustment.
Before standardizing on the handoff, test it with a representative model and repository. Check whether exported definitions align with the team’s naming, directory, review, and deployment conventions, and decide which system is authoritative when a model changes.

- For a SQLDBM-to-dbt workflow, check an actual exported YAML file against your repository’s conventions and deployment process.
- Define ownership of schema decisions and transformation logic so that visual models and code do not become conflicting sources of truth.
