For an internship interview, answer the question asked, support your point with a real example, and explain how it relates to the role. For questions about a past situation, STAR—Situation, Task, Action, Result—can help you organize the story. Your examples can come from coursework, projects, part-time work, volunteering, clubs, athletics, or independent work; they do not need to come from a formal job.
Build specific answers with the STAR method
STAR is a planning structure for questions that ask what you did in a particular situation. It helps you distinguish your own contribution from the team’s and give the interviewer a clear outcome or lesson.
- Situation: Briefly explain the context and challenge.
- Task: State your responsibility or goal.
- Action: Describe the steps you personally took. This is usually the most useful part of the answer.
- Result: Explain what happened, what changed, or what you learned. Include a number only if it is genuine and you can explain where it came from.
Harvard’s internship application guidance recommends practicing STAR and preparing three to five adaptable stories from classes, jobs, or extracurricular activities. Treat those stories as a starting point, not as scripts to force into every answer. Harvard’s general interview guide also advises candidates to connect relevant experience to the position and practice for clarity rather than memorizing wording (Harvard Mignone Center for Career Success: Interviewing; Harvard FAS: internship application advice, February 28, 2026).
Use this template to plan a response, then replace every bracket with details that are true for you:

“In [course, project, or job], our team faced [specific situation]. I was responsible for [task]. I [two or three concrete actions]. As a result, [truthful outcome or lesson]. That experience is relevant here because [connection to the internship’s stated work].”
If the outcome was mixed, say so and explain what you learned or changed. Do not invent results, ownership, or impact to make the story sound more impressive.
Answer common internship interview questions
Employers do not all ask the same questions. Harvard’s career-service guide includes the prompts below; adapt your answer to the actual wording and the internship description.

“Tell me about yourself.”
Give a brief present-past-future account: what you study or are working on now, one relevant experience or interest, and why this internship is a logical next step. Choose details that help the interviewer understand your fit instead of reciting your life history.
“What strengths would you bring to this position?”
Choose a strength that appears in the role’s requirements, then show it through a specific example. Explain what you did and how that capability could help with the internship’s work; avoid relying on unsupported adjectives.
“In what ways do you think you can make a contribution to our organization?”
Connect a skill you can demonstrate to a responsibility in the posting. For example, explain how experience organizing a student project could help you keep shared work on track—but use an example only if it reflects what you actually did.

“What about this organization impresses you in comparison with others in the field?” and “Why do you want to work here?”
Research the organization and the posting. Name a concrete aspect of the work, team, mission, or learning opportunity that genuinely interests you; then connect it to your experience or goals. Generic praise does not explain why this particular role appeals to you.
“Why should we hire you?”
Give a concise case for your fit: identify a need the posting describes, point to relevant evidence from your experience, and explain what you hope to contribute or learn. Keep the answer grounded in your qualifications rather than claiming you are the best candidate.
“Tell me about a time you failed when working on a team.”
Choose a real setback where you can explain your own role. Describe the situation, what you did, the outcome, and what you changed afterward. Take responsibility for your decisions without blaming teammates; the story does not need to end in a perfect result.

“Describe a challenging situation and how you handled it.”
Use a specific challenge and focus on the steps you took to address it. Explain the outcome or lesson, then connect the experience to a skill the internship calls for if that connection is relevant.

Limited work history does not mean you have no evidence to discuss. Harvard advises candidates to prepare for questions about activities, professional experiences, their concentration, and capstone or thesis work. Coursework, labs, student organizations, community work, personal projects, and responsibilities outside school can also provide relevant examples. Be clear about what you personally did and what you can carry into the role.
When choosing a story, ask whether it shows a skill or responsibility the internship actually involves. A class project can demonstrate research or collaboration; a volunteer role may show how you handled competing tasks. The setting matters less than the specific action and the honest connection to the position.

Prepare and practice without memorizing
- Read the job description. Identify the skills, responsibilities, and work the employer emphasizes.
- Choose three to five stories. Draw from different parts of your experience and make sure each story has enough detail to explain your actions and what happened.
- Match stories to prompts. A single story may be useful for more than one question, but do not force it where it does not answer the prompt.
- Practice aloud. Try answering with a friend, family member, tutor, advisor, or mock interviewer. Ask whether your response is relevant, clear, and concise.
- Rehearse the structure, not a script. Remember the key details and sequence so you can respond naturally to the wording you hear.
- Protect personal information. UC Berkeley advises caution with sensitive personal information when using online practice resources. Campus career services and mock interviews may offer alternatives (UC Berkeley Career Engagement: Interview Preparation).
- Prepare for the stated format. Follow the employer’s instructions. Harvard notes that phone and video screenings can go beyond a basic prescreen, and some technical roles include skills assessments; prepare for what your invitation actually specifies (Harvard Mignone Center for Career Success: Interviewing).
Prepare questions for the interviewer
Your questions can help you understand whether the internship fits your interests and goals, as well as show that you have considered the role. Harvard recommends preparing questions and clarifying the next step before the interview ends. Consider asking:
- What would a typical week look like for an intern on this team?
- What projects or responsibilities would the intern support?
- What skills or qualities help an intern succeed here?
- How is the internship team organized, and who would I work with most closely?
- What are the next steps and expected timeline?
Choose questions that have not already been answered in the posting or conversation. You can also ask about a particular responsibility or project you are curious about.
