Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Check every branch for resolve or reject, then inspect promises returned by then handlers or passed to await. Finally, trace the callback, event, timer, or request those promises depend on. A Promise { <pending> } display is only a snapshot; it does not prove the promise will never settle.
What pending means—and what “resolved” means
A promise begins pending and later becomes fulfilled or rejected. Those latter states are settled. As MDN puts it, “A promise is said to be settled if it is either fulfilled or rejected, but not pending.” MDN Web Docs: Promise
JavaScript uses “resolved” in a more nuanced way than everyday speech. Calling a promise’s resolve function with a value can lock it to that value; if the value is another pending promise or thenable, the outer promise adopts its eventual state and can remain pending. Invoking resolve therefore does not necessarily mean the promise is fulfilled.
Likewise, a promise returned by then follows the result of its handler. If that handler returns a promise that stays pending, the downstream promise stays pending too. Promise reactions run asynchronously through the job queue, so a status observed before those jobs run may simply be too early. MDN Web Docs: Promise

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Trace the promise in a practical sequence
- Confirm it is actually stuck. Attach both fulfillment and rejection handlers, and allow the expected operation time to complete. A pending display at one instant is not proof of a permanent stall.
- Mark the boundaries. Add logs or breakpoints immediately before and after promise creation, at every
resolveandrejectcall, and at each relevant callback’s entry and exit. Include a request or operation ID if multiple operations can interleave. - Audit every branch. In a manually constructed promise, inspect success, error, early-return, timeout, and cancellation paths. Any path that exits without calling either settlement function leaves the promise pending. The executor’s return value does not settle the promise; its supplied
resolveandrejectfunctions do. - Follow every adopted or returned promise. If code calls
resolve(innerPromise), returns a promise fromthenorcatch, or awaits a promise, inspect that inner operation. The outer or downstream promise cannot finish before the adopted dependency does. - Inspect the underlying operation. For callback wrappers, verify whether the callback runs on both success and failure. For event-based code, check that the listener is registered and the expected event can fire. For network requests and timers, inspect the request or timer itself.
- Use runtime tracing as a supplement. In Chrome DevTools, examine async stack frames for earlier scheduling context. Treat the trace as best-effort: visibility depends on framework or browser scheduling-primitive support.
- Consider a bounded wait when useful. A timeout can let a caller report that it waited too long, but it does not cancel the underlying operation. If that work should stop, use its supported cancellation mechanism.
Common failure points to check
- A manually created promise has a branch that never calls
resolveorreject. - A callback-to-promise adapter assumes a callback always runs, even though the underlying API may omit it on some path. Check the API contract and instrument the callback boundary.
- The outer promise adopts an inner promise that never settles.
- A
thenorcatchhandler returns a promise that remains pending, holding the downstream chain open. - The promise is being inspected before its asynchronous work or queued reactions have had time to run.
- A timeout wrapper has reported a timeout while the underlying operation continues.
These are control-flow hypotheses to investigate, not a diagnosis of any particular application. The root cause depends on the code and the operation it is waiting for.
Choose the debugging tool that answers the next question
| Method | What it can show | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Boundary logs | Which creation, callback, and settlement points ran—and where progress stopped. | Logs can interleave when operations run concurrently; include an operation ID. |
| Source breakpoints | Local control flow, including whether a branch reaches a settlement call. | They show the code path at the breakpoint, not automatically why an external operation failed to progress. |
| Chrome async stack frames | Earlier asynchronous call frames when the framework or scheduling primitive supports them. | They do not provide a complete history for every async operation. Chrome DevTools Console reference and JavaScript debugging reference |
Node.js async_hooks |
Async resource lifecycle events and promise-resolution activity. | It is a specialized, lower-level API with documented usability, safety, and performance caveats; it is not the default first debugging step. Node.js v26.10.0 Async hooks |
When to use Node.js async_hooks
Use async_hooks only if ordinary logs and breakpoints do not reveal the missing progress point. Node.js documents lifecycle callbacks including init, before, after, destroy, and promiseResolve. The promiseResolve hook runs when the constructor’s resolve function is invoked; it does not prove fulfillment, because resolution may adopt another pending promise.

Be especially careful with logging inside hooks: asynchronous logging can create more async resources and recursively trigger hooks. Node.js recommends synchronous logging in that situation. Node.js v26.10.0 Async hooks
Handle timeouts and cancellation separately
Promises do not define a first-class cancellation protocol. A timeout built with Promise.race() can make the caller stop waiting and report a timeout, but it does not stop the losing operation. Use the underlying API’s supported mechanism—often an AbortController and AbortSignal—if the operation should be cancelled. Check that API’s cancellation behavior, because support is operation-specific. MDN Web Docs: Promise

A still-pending input to Promise.race() can retain its attached handlers while it remains pending and reachable. A timeout therefore changes what the caller awaits; it does not necessarily remove the original operation or its handlers. MDN Web Docs: Promise
Why finding the stalled promise matters
An unsettled promise can prevent its fulfillment or rejection reactions from running, and dependent promises or synchronization operations may also remain blocked. A 2018 OOPSLA paper, Finding Broken Promises in Asynchronous JavaScript Programs, examines these consequences; it is research context, not a measure of how often such bugs occur.
