Start by finding the specific Chrome tab, extension, or background task using the CPU—not by closing all your tabs. Open Chrome’s built-in Task Manager, check its CPU column, and end only a task you can safely stop after saving your work. If inactive tabs are the issue, Chrome’s Performance settings can deactivate eligible tabs while letting you exempt important sites.

Find out which Chrome task is using the CPU

  1. Open Chrome Task Manager: Select More tools > Task Manager from Chrome’s menu.
  2. Check the CPU column: Look for a tab, extension, or background task with notable CPU activity. This gives you a more useful lead than the number of Chrome processes alone. Google’s instructions for identifying high-CPU processes in Windows apply specifically to managed Chrome on Windows, not necessarily to every system. Google’s managed-Chrome troubleshooting guide explains that a renderer process can serve one or more tabs or extensions.
  3. Save work before stopping anything: Forms and other unsaved work in the selected task may be lost. If you have saved what you need and the task is safe to stop, select it and choose End process. Google warns, “Any unsaved work in your task will be lost.” Google’s Chrome speed guidance covers Task Manager and resource-heavy tasks.

If an extension appears responsible, review it in Chrome’s extension management and turn off or remove extensions you do not want. If the task is a site you need, save your work and try reloading that tab rather than ending unrelated tasks.

Keep important sites active while other tabs can rest

Chrome’s Memory Saver is primarily a memory-management feature, not a guaranteed CPU fix. It deactivates eligible inactive tabs to save computer memory; when you return to one, it reloads. Choose a deactivation level in Settings > Performance: Moderate waits longer before deactivation, while Maximum deactivates eligible tabs sooner. The precise behavior and labels can vary with Chrome version.

  1. Open Chrome’s menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Performance.
  3. Turn on Memory Saver, then choose the deactivation level that suits you.
  4. Under Always keep these sites active, add sites where you need activity to continue.

This lets Chrome deactivate other eligible inactive tabs while keeping selected sites exempt. It does not guarantee that every tab remains live or that CPU use will fall. Audio or video playback, calls, screen sharing, notifications, downloads, partially filled forms, pinned tabs, and connected devices can also prevent a tab from being deactivated. Google explains that “When you access an inactive tab, it automatically reloads.” See Chrome’s Performance settings help for current details.

Use Energy Saver when battery conditions make it relevant

Energy Saver is aimed at power use and can also help with eligible CPU-intensive background tabs while it is on. Google says it reduces image capture rate and other background tasks; it activates automatically when the computer is unplugged or its battery is low. The cited availability is Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery.

Google states, “When Energy Saver is on, Chrome stops eligible CPU-intensive background tabs to reduce power consumption.” Video-conferencing and audio-playback tabs are unaffected, and gaming or video performance may change. You can temporarily resume background updates for an individual session. Find the setting at Settings > Performance > Energy Saver. Read Google’s Energy Saver guidance for the options available on your device.

If CPU use remains high, use the process as a clue

Google’s more detailed process guidance is for managed Chrome on Microsoft Windows, so treat these as diagnostic possibilities rather than universal diagnoses. In Windows Task Manager or another process manager, a Chrome process marked --type=renderer serves one or more tabs or extensions. High renderer CPU can be associated with a poorly programmed web app. High GPU-process activity may involve a graphics driver or graphics-heavy content such as 3D imagery or YouTube video. A slow Chrome main process may be associated with slow disk access or insufficient system memory.

Use the specific process and what you were doing in Chrome to guide the next check: for example, see whether the spike follows one web app or graphics-heavy page. Do not assume a hardware upgrade will fix a CPU issue based on the process count alone. In enterprise troubleshooting, Google describes collecting performance traces; those traces can include sensitive filenames, process parameters, and function names. Consult Google’s managed-Chrome performance guide before collecting or sharing them.

Try supporting fixes without sacrificing important tabs

  • Update Chrome: Google includes keeping Chrome up to date among its speed recommendations.
  • Review extensions: Turn off or remove unwanted extensions, particularly if Task Manager identifies one as busy.
  • Adjust preloading: Chrome’s Performance settings include page-preloading controls; changing them may help if preloading is relevant to your usage.
  • Reduce competing workload: Google advises against running multiple apps at once when addressing Chrome performance.
  • Consider resetting Chrome settings only later: It is a broader step than targeting one task. Google lists it as a possible troubleshooting measure, not a first response to a CPU spike.

Closing tabs is sometimes recommended when pages fail to load because of memory pressure, but that is a different symptom from high CPU use. For crashes or pages that will not open, see Google’s Chrome crash help; it does not mean you need to close important tabs as the first CPU fix.

Chrome Task Manager A specific tab, extension, or task appears to be using CPU. Ending a task can lose unsaved work.
Memory Saver You want Chrome to save memory by deactivating eligible inactive tabs, while exempting important sites. Inactive tabs may reload when revisited; this is not a guaranteed CPU reduction.
Energy Saver You want to reduce power use and eligible background activity on a supported battery-powered device under the relevant battery conditions. Gaming or video performance may change; video calls and audio playback are unaffected.
Extension review, Chrome update, or preload adjustment A particular extension, outdated browser, or Performance setting is a plausible contributor. These are targeted checks, not universal cures.
