If the input tests are clean, investigate the game’s controller layout and input software, followed by frame pacing, refresh rate, and VSync. This sequence helps distinguish controller or connection trouble from delay caused later in the game-to-screen path.
What feels like controller lag?
“Input lag” can mean more than one thing: a delay before the game reads a button, or a delay before the resulting image appears on screen. A steering dead zone or an unsuitable sensitivity curve can also make a car feel slow to respond without proving that input is being transmitted late.
Before changing settings, note whether the delay affects steering, throttle and brake, or every control; whether it happens in one game or several; and whether it is constant or appears alongside stutter. Record the controller mode, game frame-rate behavior, display refresh rate, and Steam Input configuration so you can compare changes against the same baseline.
Test whether Windows or Steam sees your inputs
Check button and stick registration before changing graphics settings. Microsoft documents testing a controller through Windows device properties; in Steam, open Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Input. Move the sticks and press the controls that feel delayed in the game.

- If inputs fail, drop out, or behave inconsistently in the test, focus on charge, pairing, cable and port, controller firmware or manufacturer support, or a possible hardware fault.
- If the test is clean but one racing game feels slow, check that game’s gamepad support, selected control preset, dead zone, and sensitivity curve.
- If the same problem occurs across games, compare connection modes and check for broader input software or USB issues.
A clean test does not rule out every controller problem, but it helps separate basic registration trouble from a game-specific or screen-presentation issue. Microsoft’s Windows controller guide covers connecting and testing controllers.
Compare wired and wireless in the same conditions
If your controller supports wired USB data, connect it directly to the PC with a compatible data-capable cable. Compare with wireless in the same game, scene, display settings, and frame-rate conditions; changing only the connection mode makes the result more useful. A USB cable that only charges may not provide a wired data connection, and not every controller supports the same modes.

Microsoft says, “Most controllers — Xbox, PlayStation, and many third‑party options — support USB connections.” That is not a guarantee for every model or cable, nor does it establish that wired play is always faster. The Windows connection guide is US-market oriented and notes that availability and features can vary by region.
If the symptom changes between modes, re-pair the wireless controller, check its charge, disconnect an existing pairing with another device, and reduce nearby Bluetooth-device congestion where applicable. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your controller. Steam’s 2026 documentation recommends using its Puck with the Steam Controller and also lists Bluetooth and wired USB-C modes; that product-specific recommendation should not be generalized to other controllers. Check whether the USB port or device layout matters
If the controller works differently across USB ports, or its behavior changes when other USB devices are connected, move it to another port and temporarily disconnect unnecessary peripherals or hubs. Steam describes some problems commonly called USB bandwidth issues as scheduling or contention problems: port choice and device arrangement can affect the result. Treat this as a targeted test, not a universal fix. Steam’s USB troubleshooting article explains this class of issue.
Verify the game’s controller and remapping settings
Confirm that the racing game supports gamepads and has the intended controller preset selected. If the game launches through Steam, inspect its per-title controller or Steam Input configuration. Avoid stacking multiple remapping tools while troubleshooting: two layers that both translate controller input can make it harder to identify which one is responsible.

For issues involving a Steam Controller, Steam’s legacy troubleshooting guidance points to the overlay, selected input style, other connected controllers or peripherals, and conflicting software as areas to test. Disconnect other input devices and temporarily disable overlays or known conflicting programs one at a time; restore them one by one afterward to identify any change. Those pages are older and device-specific, so they do not establish that any named program causes lag for every player. Notice whether steering feels delayed at the same time the game stutters or delivers frames unevenly. Also check that Windows is using the display’s intended refresh rate. Refresh rate is not the same as frames per second: a display’s refresh setting and the game’s frame output are related to presentation, but they are different measures.

Test VSync and any available in-game latency or presentation options one at a time. Compare perceived response along with smoothness and tearing rather than assuming one setting is best. Steam warns that disabling VSync can cause tearing or other visual artifacts. Steam’s VSync guidance describes that tradeoff.
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations can reduce frame latency through a compatible flip-model path, but the benefit depends on compatible games and displays. Use the result to choose the next step
- Inputs fail in Windows or Steam: troubleshoot the controller, charge, pairing, cable, port, or firmware before adjusting game graphics.
- Inputs test clean, but one title feels delayed: check that game’s controller support, preset, dead zone, sensitivity, and Steam Input configuration.
- Wired and wireless behave differently: investigate the affected connection mode, pairing, cable data support, or port arrangement; the comparison does not establish a universal wired-versus-wireless ranking.
- The delay coincides with stutter or changes with VSync or refresh settings: focus on frame pacing and display presentation, while weighing response against tearing and smoothness.
Microsoft’s Dynamic Latency Input feature is Xbox-console-only and is not available on PC, so it is not a PC setting to enable. Avoid registry changes, controller overclocking, USB polling-rate overrides, disabling Windows GameInput services, or adopting a fixed polling rate based on anecdotes: the cited guidance does not establish these as general-purpose fixes. Microsoft Learn’s Dynamic Latency Input documentation specifies its platform scope.
