You can reduce unwanted phone use without cutting off calls, messages, maps, work tools, or authentication apps. Start with Android’s built-in Digital Wellbeing Focus mode: it pauses only the apps you select, so leave essential apps off that list. If you need a different kind of help, Fewest reduces home-screen prompts, one sec adds a pause before selected app openings, and ActionDash provides more detailed usage reports.
These are self-management tools, not treatments for a clinical diagnosis. The right fit depends on whether you need to see your habits, remove visual cues, add friction, or pause chosen apps on a schedule.
Which Android app or setting should you try first?
| Option | Best fit | How to keep essential apps available | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android Digital Wellbeing | Usage awareness, app timers, bedtime routines, or scheduled pauses without installing another app | Focus mode pauses only the apps you select. Leave essential apps unselected. | Menus vary by device. Timers close apps when time runs out and may not work with some work or school accounts. |
| Fewest | Your home screen prompts habitual openings and you want a minimal, text-based launcher | Pin useful apps and apply the mindful pause only to chosen apps. | It changes your home-screen experience. Some privacy-lock behavior applies only when opening apps through Fewest; check Google Play for current premium features and purchase terms. |
| one sec | You want a deliberate interruption before opening selected apps | Apply the intervention only to selected apps and keep essentials outside it. | The service also describes stronger blocking and time-limit options. Its reported reduction in app openings is a vendor claim, not an independently verified comparison here. |
| ActionDash | You want reports on screen time, app launches, notifications, and unlocks, with optional focus controls | Pause selected apps with Focus mode and leave essential apps unselected. | Its Google Play listing says it uses Accessibility Services for website detection and declares collection of location, app activity, and other data types. Review current permissions and disclosures. |
There is no established head-to-head independent trial showing that one of these current options is best at reducing problematic phone use. Choose based on the specific habit you want to change, not on an assumption that one app is a proven treatment.
Can Android pause only distracting apps?
Yes. Android Digital Wellbeing’s Focus mode lets you select apps to pause. Google’s Android Help page explains: “When Focus mode is on, you can’t use these apps and won’t get notifications from them.” Calls and messages are not automatically blocked by this feature; whether they remain available depends on which apps you choose to pause.

Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Set up Focus mode
- Open Settings and find Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. The exact menu path can vary by device and Android version.
- Open Focus mode, then choose the apps you want paused. Do not select apps you need to stay reachable through, such as your phone, messaging, maps, work, or authentication apps.
- Turn Focus mode on, or set a schedule if you want it to run at particular times. Google’s instructions also offer Take a break to temporarily unpause apps.
While Focus mode is active, selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are withheld. For details, see Google Android Help: Manage how you spend time on your Android phone with Digital Wellbeing.
When an app timer is a better fit
Digital Wellbeing app timers set a daily allowance for an app. When the allowance runs out, the app closes; the timer resets at midnight. You can remove the timer to use the app again before then, so it is a limit you control rather than an irreversible lock. Google notes that timers may not work with some work or school accounts.

- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Which third-party app fits your habit?
Fewest: change the home-screen cue
Fewest is a minimalist launcher for people who open distracting apps almost automatically after seeing them on the home screen. A pared-down text list can make those visual prompts less prominent, while a mindful pause can add a moment before selected launches. This approach changes the launcher experience, so consider whether you want a different home screen day to day.
The developer says Fewest’s launcher data stays local. Check the current Google Play listing for Fewest for feature availability, premium terms, and the current privacy disclosures. The developer also says some privacy-lock behavior applies only when apps are opened through Fewest.

one sec: interrupt a launch
one sec is designed to insert a pause before opening apps you select. That can suit someone who wants to notice an impulse without preventing every opening. Keep essential apps outside the intervention. The service also describes blocking and time limits, which are stronger options than an opening pause.
one sec reports an average of 57% fewer app openings on its website; treat that figure as the company’s claim, not as an independently established result or a promise for an individual user. See the one sec website for its description of the available options.

ActionDash: understand the pattern first
ActionDash emphasizes reports about screen time, launches, notifications, and unlocks. It may be useful if you first want a clearer picture of when and how often you use your phone, then want to try focus controls. Its listing says it uses Accessibility Services for website detection and declares collection of location, app activity, and other data types. Review the current permissions and disclosures on the ActionDash Google Play listing before installing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose and configure a setup that keeps essentials working
- Check your usage pattern. Open Digital Wellbeing’s usage chart and look for apps taking substantial time or generating frequent notifications.
- Match the tool to the trigger. If interruptions are the problem, reduce notifications or use selective Focus mode. If the home screen leads to unplanned openings, try a simpler launcher. If you open an app without thinking, add friction only to that launch.
- Keep the essential list explicit. Before enabling a restriction, check that calls, messages, maps, work tools, and authentication apps you rely on remain outside it. Your essential apps may differ from someone else’s.
- Try one change, then review. Use a short trial period and check whether the usage pattern changes without disrupting daily tasks. This is a practical way to evaluate the documented controls, not a clinically validated protocol.
Device menus, app compatibility, permissions, pricing, and features can change. Check your device’s current settings and each app’s live listing before relying on a particular option.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The options above offer different controls: selected-app pauses, timers, fewer home-screen cues, launch interruptions, or usage reports. The reviewed materials do not establish that any one is clinically superior or that these tools diagnose or cure addiction. The one sec percentage is a vendor-reported figure, not a verified comparison across these apps.
A 2024 descriptive study of self-help disconnection apps on Google Play used app metadata collected in March 2024 and included products such as ActionDash. It does not establish clinical efficacy for those apps. See Self-helped digital disconnection on Google Play, Mobile Media & Communication.
