What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a CSS style seems to do nothing, inspect the affected element in your browser’s DevTools before changing the rule. Check, in order, whether the selector matches, the declaration is valid, another rule wins, the value is inherited, the property applies to the current layout, and the stylesheet loaded. The Styles and Computed panes usually reveal which case you have.
Start with the element in DevTools
- Open the page’s developer tools. In Chrome, right-click the affected element and choose Inspect, or open DevTools and use the element picker. Select the element in the live DOM tree; scripts or other page behavior may have changed it from the original HTML.
- Find the intended rule. Look in the Styles pane for the selector and declaration. If the rule is absent, investigate whether the selector matches and whether the stylesheet loaded. If it appears crossed out, the selector matched but another declaration won. Chrome’s CSS inspection guide explains how to inspect rules and declarations.
- Check the final value. In the Computed pane, find the property to see the resolved value the browser uses. Expand or trace it to identify the declaration that supplied it. This separates a missing rule from a conflict or an unexpected inherited value.
MDN’s CSS debugging guide also recommends using browser tools to examine how styles apply.
If the rule is missing, check the selector and stylesheet
Compare the selector with the live markup
Check the selected element’s tag, class, and ID against the selector. For example, .notice matches an element with the notice class; #notice targets an element with that ID. Confirm that the selector’s relationship to other elements is accurate, too: a descendant selector such as .card p requires a paragraph inside an element with the card class.
Use the DOM shown in DevTools rather than relying only on a template or source file. If the markup is malformed or not what you expect, validate the HTML; invalid markup can contribute to confusing results.

Confirm the stylesheet loaded
If the expected rule does not appear anywhere, check for browser-reported loading errors and verify that the page includes the stylesheet you edited. A rendered page is not proof that every source file loaded correctly or that the source is free of errors. MDN’s debugging guide covers stylesheet and validation checks.
If the rule appears, check its syntax and value
A matched selector does not guarantee that its declaration can be used. Check the property name, colon, value, and terminating semicolon. A misspelled property or a value the property does not accept is discarded during CSS processing. DevTools may flag invalid declarations; MDN explains how browsers handle invalid declarations.

For example, colour: red; is not the CSS property color. Correct the declaration, then check the Computed pane to confirm the browser now resolves the expected value.
If the declaration is crossed out, trace the cascade
A crossed-out declaration generally means it matched but lost to another declaration. Identify the winning rule in DevTools, then compare the factors that determine precedence. The cascade accounts for origin and importance, cascade layers, specificity, and source order; specificity alone does not decide every conflict. MDN’s cascade overview describes how those factors interact.

- Find the winning declaration and where it comes from.
- Compare whether the competing declarations use different origins, importance, or cascade layers.
- If those factors do not resolve the conflict, compare selector specificity; source order matters when earlier cascade factors tie.
- Make the smallest clear correction: remove an unintended conflict, adjust the relevant selector, or deliberately organize precedence. Avoid adding specificity or
!importantautomatically, since that can make later changes harder.
For a codebase with recurring conflicts across many stylesheets, cascade layers can make precedence more explicit. They are a project-organization tool, not the first response to a one-off typo.
If the value seems unexpected, check inheritance
Some properties can pass from an ancestor to its descendants; others do not inherit by default. In DevTools, look for an “Inherited from” section and inspect the ancestor’s rule. A direct declaration on the selected element takes precedence over an inherited value for that property. The MDN inheritance guide explains which properties inherit and how inheritance works.

If the declaration is valid but has no visible effect, check layout
A property can be valid and still be inactive in the element’s current layout context. For example, justify-content and align-items control alignment in flex or grid layouts; they do not provide that alignment when the element remains display: block. Check the DevTools hint and inspect related layout properties, especially display, on the element you selected.
Use this diagnosis to choose the next check
| What DevTools shows | Likely issue to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The rule is absent | The selector does not match, or the stylesheet or rule is not available on the page | Compare the selector with the live DOM; check stylesheet loading and browser errors |
| The rule appears with a warning | The declaration has an invalid property name or value | Correct the syntax and confirm the resolved value in Computed |
| The declaration is crossed out | Another declaration wins in the cascade | Trace the winning rule and compare precedence factors |
| The value is listed under an ancestor | The selected element is receiving an inherited value | Inspect the ancestor and whether the property inherits |
| The declaration is valid, but the effect is absent | The property may not apply in the current layout context | Check the property’s requirements and related layout settings |
