To connect a home battery to a virtual power plant (VPP), first confirm that a provider serving your address supports your exact battery and inverter. Then check grid-connection, utility or retailer, internet, payment, battery-reserve and dispatch requirements; enroll through the provider’s app or portal; and complete any required utility or program review. A battery described as “VPP-capable” is not automatically compatible with every VPP or already enrolled.

What connecting a battery to a VPP involves

A VPP groups distributed energy resources, including household batteries, so they can support the electricity grid. The connection is usually a provider and program enrollment—not a universal cable or add-on. The provider may remotely manage some stored energy under the terms you accept.

Eligibility and enrollment differ by location, provider, battery and inverter. Your system may need to be installed, commissioned and grid-connected before you can apply. A provider may also require a compatible electricity retailer or utility account. Australian Government guidance notes that a battery can be VPP-compatible without its owner participating: YourHome: Batteries.

Check your system and local program before applying

Record your equipment and service details

Have the battery brand and model, usable capacity, inverter model, installation and commissioning status, service address, utility or electricity retailer, and account details available. Confirm whether the system is grid-connected and whether it has a reliable internet connection for remote management. An off-grid battery cannot join the NSW incentive program; other programs set their own requirements.

Find programs available at your address

Look at official program pages from your battery manufacturer, utility, retailer or VPP provider. Check that the program is currently accepting participants in your territory, and whether your account holder, rate plan or electricity retailer must meet specific conditions. Availability can change, so confirm current eligibility directly with the provider.

Verify the exact battery and inverter

Ask the VPP provider to confirm both your battery and inverter model. “VPP-ready” or “VPP-capable” does not mean a product works with every program. In a June 2026 Australian market analysis, the ACCC compared 16 popular batteries with a sample of 14 VPP products and found that many batteries were compatible with only part of the sample. The ACCC cautions that its sample may not be comprehensive or current; it is not a global compatibility measure. See the ACCC’s June 2026 National Electricity Market report.

EF ECOFLOW 12kWh Power Station: DELTA Pro Ultra with Extra Battery
  • One Powers All. The unit of DELTA Pro Ultra whole house generator includes an inverter and a battery. One inverter supports 120V & 240V and has an exceptional 7200W output, allowing you to run almost any heavy household appliance, even a 3-ton central air conditioner. Triple the inverters for an incredible 21.6kW AC output, allowing you to live life to the fullest even during an outage. The electric generator achieves a total 7200W output even during charging.
  • Strong Power Security. Scalable from one battery of 6144Wh, two days of essential power, all the way to 15, it multiplies the energy to a gigantic 90kWh. For a standard North American household, that's over 30 days of essential power secured.
  • Customize Your Home Power. Use the EcoFlow app to priolritize specific circuits in your home, extending your backup even longer. For more than just blackouts, it intelligently analyses your home power usage to offset peak rates while utilizing solar to lower energy bills.
  • Multi Ways to Charge. One battery of 6144Wh can be fully recharged in 2 hours. Faster than any other 6kWh solar generator. Users can choose among electric vehicle piles, solar, wall outlets or outdoor generators for charging.
  • Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.

Compare control, backup and payment terms

Read the current contract and program rules before enrolling. A VPP may dispatch some stored energy, but the permitted timing, amount and conditions depend on the particular program. Compare:

  • Whether compensation is an enrollment incentive, payment for exported energy, bill credit, or recurring dispatch payment—and when it is paid.
  • When events can occur, how long they may last, whether you receive notice, and whether you can opt out.
  • How much battery capacity the provider can access and what minimum reserve remains for household use.
  • Contract duration, cancellation or disenrollment process, retailer-switch conditions, and what happens if internet connectivity is lost.
  • Any utility review, interconnection paperwork, incentive nomination or other onboarding requirements.

Grid-connected operation and outage backup are separate issues. Australian Government guidance explains that some grid-connected systems shut down during an outage to protect electrical workers; backup may require suitable equipment and electrical work. Check your system design with your installer. Do not change wiring, inverter settings or grid-export configuration yourself.

Program-specific settings should not be treated as standard VPP rules. For example, the Tesla Powerwall program with San Jose Clean Energy describes a 20% reserve, event notifications, an opt-out and Storm Watch behavior for that program. These terms do not establish the settings used by other providers. Review the Tesla San Jose Clean Energy VPP terms if that is the program you are considering.

Enroll through the provider and complete any review

  1. Choose an eligible program. Confirm the provider serves your address and supports your exact battery and inverter.
  2. Review and accept the terms. Check dispatch, reserve, compensation, notification, opt-out and exit provisions before signing.
  3. Submit the application in the provider’s channel. Follow its app or portal instructions and provide requested customer, utility and equipment information.
  4. Complete any utility or program approval. Some providers require interconnection documentation or utility review; wait for confirmation rather than assuming submission means enrollment is active.
  5. Check enrollment status and settings. Use the provider’s app or site to verify participation, reserve settings and any payment records.

The precise screens and prerequisites are provider-specific. EG4’s Grid Services example requires the system to be installed, commissioned and connected to EG4 Connect before the owner views programs available for the system and location, submits requested details and awaits any review. See EG4’s enrollment instructions.

In the Tesla/San Jose example, applicants need a qualifying San Jose Clean Energy residential account and a completed battery interconnection application; enrollment is through the Tesla app and the utility reviews applications. Those conditions apply to that program, not all VPPs. NSW’s incentive process has its own provider, retailer and paperwork requirements, described on the NSW VPP incentive page.

What earnings and incentives to expect

There is no general VPP earnings figure that applies across locations and contracts. NSW Climate and Energy Action says households may earn up to A$300 per year in bill credits or direct payments; this is a potential upper claim on its general information page, not a guaranteed return. Actual value depends on the provider and contract, including compensation for exported energy and how much battery capacity may be accessed. See NSW’s VPP overview.

For the NSW incentive described on the current page accessed 4 October 2026, eligible grid-connected batteries must be greater than 2 kWh and up to 50 kWh; the incentive calculation uses usable capacity up to 28 kWh. A participating provider and compatible electricity retailer are also required. These are NSW-specific rules and may change; confirm live terms with the provider and the official NSW incentive page.

Keep the system connected after enrollment

Maintain the internet connection needed for remote management, and check the provider app or portal for enrollment status and participation settings. If your retailer, account, battery, inverter or service address changes, ask the provider whether the change affects eligibility or enrollment. Contact the provider, utility or installer—not the battery wiring or grid settings—if status or operation is unclear.
