There is no single confirmed cause for Netflix getting darker when you pause playback or switch tabs. The right setting to check depends on whether you are watching in the mobile app, a TV app, or a computer browser—and whether your display uses HDR. Start with brightness and HDR settings, but treat them as troubleshooting leads, not a proven explanation for this exact behavior.
Why the screen may look darker
Netflix’s guidance for dark video points viewers to device brightness and HDR settings. It does not identify pausing or switching tabs as a trigger that always changes the picture. Microsoft also notes that some standard dynamic range (SDR) apps can look darker on HDR displays. That makes HDR worth checking on Windows, but it does not establish that HDR is causing your Netflix image to dim.
First note where the change happens: on every title or just one, and in the Netflix app or a browser. Also record your device, operating system, browser, display model, and whether HDR is enabled. Those details help narrow down which controls apply.
Check the setting for your device
Android, iPhone, or iPad
- Check Netflix’s brightness control: while a video is playing, tap the screen and look for the brightness slider in the player. Netflix says this control is available in its Android, iPhone, and iPad apps, but not in web browsers or on TV displays. Netflix’s brightness instructions show where to find it.
- Check system brightness: adjust your phone or tablet’s display brightness as well. The in-player slider and the device’s brightness setting are separate controls.
TV app or streaming device
Look in the TV or streaming device’s picture and HDR settings. Their names and locations vary by manufacturer and model, so consult the device manual or manufacturer’s support. Netflix notes that some HDR-compatible TVs do not provide an HDR toggle in Netflix itself; do not assume that every TV has the same control. See Netflix’s guidance for dark video.

Windows computer
Check whether Windows HDR is enabled and whether your screen and playback setup support Netflix HDR. Microsoft explains that some SDR apps may appear darker on an HDR display, so HDR configuration is one possibility to investigate—not a confirmed cause of dimming when you pause or switch tabs.
Netflix’s Windows HDR playback requirements include supported software and hardware and an HDR-enabled screen. Some Windows 11 systems may also need the HEVC Video Extensions. Netflix lists a connection speed of 15 megabits per second or higher among its requirements for Windows Ultra HD and HDR playback. That is a playback requirement, not evidence that HDR causes this symptom. Avoid changing HDR settings on the assumption that doing so will fix the issue; first establish whether your setup uses HDR and whether the behavior changes when you test it.

Web browser
Netflix does not offer its mobile in-player brightness slider in a browser. Check your computer’s display brightness and HDR configuration instead. Updating the browser is a general video troubleshooting step, not a documented brightness fix; Netflix’s video playback troubleshooting covers general playback problems.
If it happens only with one title
If other Netflix titles look normal, report the affected title as a possible title-specific video problem. Netflix provides instructions for reporting problems with a title. If the screen dims across multiple titles, focus first on the brightness and display settings for your device.

What closing tabs can—and cannot—do
Netflix says closing extra tabs or apps may improve streaming performance. That advice concerns performance; it does not establish that closing tabs will correct a change in brightness. If playback is also stuttering or struggling to load, closing unused tabs or apps may be a reasonable general check. For dimming alone, prioritize the display controls that match your device.

How to narrow down the cause
- One title or all titles? If only one title is affected, report that title. If several are affected, inspect device-level brightness and HDR settings.
- One screen or several? Check the brightness and picture settings on the screen where the change occurs; the controls differ between mobile devices, computers, TVs, and streaming devices.
- Does the timing match a pause or tab switch every time? Note the device, app or browser, display, and HDR state. Official guidance does not establish a universal cause for that specific trigger, so the details matter when seeking help.
