Removing device admin access deactivates the app’s administrator role. The app can no longer enforce the device policies granted through that role, but it usually remains installed. What happens to the app’s features or work access depends on how the app and, where applicable, your organization manage the device.
What changes when you deactivate device admin access?
Android’s Device Administration API lets an app request your permission to act as a device administrator and enforce the policies it declares. When you deactivate it, the app loses that authority; this is not the same as revoking an ordinary Android permission. Android explains that an app’s policies are not enforced while it is inactive, and features that rely on those policies may stop working. For example, an app may lose a syncing benefit tied to its active administrator status. Android’s device administration overview describes how the API works and how its policies depend on activation.
| Situation | What may happen after deactivation | Who controls the outcome? |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone device-admin app on a personal phone | Policies declared by the app stop being enforced. A feature that depends on them may stop working. | The app’s design determines whether other features continue. |
| App with a policy-dependent feature, such as syncing | The dependent feature may stop or change because the app is no longer an active administrator. | The app determines its response to losing the role. |
| Employer-managed device or work profile | Work access or compliance status may be affected by the organization’s management configuration. | The organization’s device-policy controller and IT administrator govern the setup; deactivation should not be treated as removal of enrollment. |
Does turning off device admin delete the app or your data?
No: deactivation itself is not an uninstall or a factory reset. Android says an existing device-admin app must first be unregistered as an administrator before it can be uninstalled. If you want to remove the app, uninstall it separately after deactivation.
Do not assume deactivation deletes all app data, personal files, or settings. An app can respond to being disabled by clearing or changing its own policy configuration, but Android does not automatically erase all of the app’s data just because its administrator role ends. In Android’s developer example, the app clears a stored policy preference in its onDisabled() callback; that is an example of an app’s own cleanup, not a universal rule. Android’s overview and its device management policy guide explain the administrator role and callback behavior.

How do you deactivate the app, then uninstall it?
- Open your phone’s Settings and find the device-administrator controls. The exact path and label vary by Android release and manufacturer, so look for a section named along the lines of “Device admin apps” or “Device administrators.”
- Select the app you want to deactivate and turn off its administrator access. Confirm the action if Android asks.
- If you no longer want the app, uninstall it separately using your device’s app settings or app launcher.
Check that you have selected the intended app before deactivating it. The available controls and their labels are not identical across Android devices.
What if the phone or work profile is managed by an organization?
Android distinguishes an ordinary device-admin app from a device-policy controller (DPC) operating as a device owner or profile owner. Those roles can be part of a company’s device or work-profile management. Turning off an app’s administrator access should not be treated as a way to bypass organizational enrollment or remove the organization’s policies. If the device or work profile is managed by your employer, ask your IT administrator what deactivation would do and how to remove management properly. Android’s device administration overview describes the distinction between these management roles.

Does Android version affect device admin?
Yes. Android marked some Device Admin policies deprecated beginning with Android 9 (API level 28). That does not mean every administrator feature disappeared in Android 9, nor does it mean that all device-management roles have the same behavior. The result of deactivation still depends on the app’s declared policies, its implementation, and whether the device is managed by an organization. See Android’s overview and the developer guide to device management policies for the API context.

Not for typical phone users. Android’s removeActiveAdmin() API can only be called by the app that owns the administration component, and the operation is asynchronous: the administrator might still be active when the method returns. Android’s ADB documentation also lists dpm remove-active-admin as a developer command and requires the app to declare android:testOnly. These are developer and test mechanisms, not general consumer instructions. See the DevicePolicyManager API reference and ADB documentation for dpm.
