Shazam is the best first app to try when a song is playing inside a video on your phone. Apple documents identifying music from other apps such as TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram on iPhone, iPad, and Android. If the clip is not playing or you can reproduce the melody, SoundHound and Google Search offer humming-based alternatives.
Which app should you use?

These options solve two different problems: Shazam can listen to the clip itself, while SoundHound and Google Search can work from a melody you can reproduce. The available official sources do not establish a controlled accuracy ranking, including for short or edited clips or noisy surroundings.
Identify a song playing in a video with Shazam
On iPhone or iPad
- Add Shazam Music Recognition to Control Center in your device settings.
- Play the video, open Control Center, and tap the Shazam Music Recognition button while the music is audible.
- Look for the result in a notification. It may also be saved to Shazam, depending on your account and settings.
You can also ask Siri to identify the music. Apple’s guide describes these methods for identifying songs playing in other apps.
On Android
- Add Shazam to Quick Settings if you want a shortcut, or open the Shazam app.
- Start the video, swipe down from the top of the screen, and tap Shazam. You can also use the notification workflow documented by Shazam.
- For a floating shortcut, enable Pop-up Shazam and grant the required notification and “Appear on top” permissions.
- Check the Shazam result after the app recognizes the music.
Android menus and permission names can differ by device and software version. Shazam’s Google Play listing says features may also vary by country.

When you want Shazam to keep listening
Auto Shazam can continue identifying and saving songs while you switch apps or lock the device. Shazam documents both single-result and continuous modes on Android. Use it when you want to capture several songs rather than identify one short clip.
Can Shazam identify a video while headphones are connected?
Shazam’s Google Play listing describes a Share Screen permission that can temporarily access device audio output for identification while headphones are connected. This may let Shazam recognize music without relying on a microphone hearing the sound from a speaker. It is not a guaranteed workflow: behavior can vary with country, app version, operating system, permissions, and device. If it does not work, try the video without headphones or use a humming-based option.

Use SoundHound or Google Search if you can hum the tune
SoundHound
Open SoundHound and ask a voice question such as “What song is this?” or “What song am I humming?” Its support information documents searching by singing or humming, which is useful if you remember the melody but cannot replay the video for Shazam.
Google Search hum-to-search
Use Google’s hum-to-search feature to hum, whistle, or sing the melody and review the likely matches it returns. Google describes the feature as a way to match a hummed melody, not as a guarantee that every tune will be identified. Its explainer also discusses Pixel Now Playing and Google app SoundSearch historically; it does not confirm current availability for every phone or region.

What to do when an app cannot identify the song
- Replay the clip from a section with clearer, longer music, if possible.
- Try Shazam’s cross-app shortcut or another documented access route if the first one did not capture the audio.
- If direct listening fails, hum or sing the melody into SoundHound or Google Search.
- Try another service if the first returns no match. The official sources reviewed do not provide comparative success rates for difficult clips or noisy conditions.
What happens after identification?
Shazam can open identified tracks in Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, and Deezer. Shazam describes its app as free, and identifying a track is separate from streaming it: listening to a full song may require a subscription to the service you choose. SoundHound says its core service is free and offers its Infinity edition as a one-time purchase for an ad-free experience.
