For most Linux desktop users, the key change is how the desktop manages windows and how applications reach the display. Wayland is a protocol implemented by a desktop compositor; X11 is an older window-system architecture. In a Wayland session, many X11 apps can still run through Xwayland, but session availability and compatibility depend on your distribution, desktop, and workflow.
What are Wayland and X11?
Wayland is a protocol that lets graphical applications communicate with a compositor—the component responsible for displaying windows and managing the desktop. It is not one universal desktop environment or window manager. The Wayland project’s introduction to Wayland explains this protocol-and-compositor model.
X11 is an older, separate window-system architecture. In practical terms, the session you log into determines which display system and desktop components are coordinating your applications. The experience of a Wayland session therefore varies with its compositor and desktop environment.
What changes when you use a Wayland session?
The compositor is central to the desktop
In a Wayland session, the compositor handles window management and display presentation. This means there is no single Wayland desktop implementation: behavior is shaped by the compositor and desktop environment you use.

X11 applications can run through Xwayland
Xwayland provides an X server for legacy X11 applications inside a Wayland session. An X11 app remains an X11 client, while Xwayland connects it to the Wayland compositor. This lets native Wayland and X11 windows coexist in many setups. The Wayland project describes the arrangement and its limits in its Xwayland documentation and FAQ.
That compatibility is substantial, but it does not make the two systems identical. Some X11-specific behavior or desktop integration may not carry over; for example, a separate X11 window manager generally cannot operate as an independent manager in a Wayland session. Check the exact applications and features you rely on rather than assuming every X11 workflow will behave the same way.

Is Wayland replacing X11?
The direction is toward Wayland in some desktop projects, but there is no single schedule that applies to every Linux distribution or desktop. Whether you can choose an X11 session depends on the distribution, desktop environment, and release.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 release notes say the Ubuntu Desktop session is Wayland-only, following a change in Ubuntu 25.10. They also say other desktop sessions—including KDE on X11, Xfce, MATE, and i3—can still be launched using an X.org session. That is a statement about Ubuntu 26.04 and its documented session options, not a universal Linux policy.

KDE Plasma roadmap
In a June 2, 2026 post, KDE contributor David Edmundson described Plasma 6.7 as the final Plasma release planned to support X11, with Plasma 6.8 planned to be Wayland-only. This is a project plan and could change; distribution packaging and release timing may also differ. The same post reported that more than 95% of Plasma 6.6 users were on Wayland, based on KDE internal metrics. That figure describes Plasma users in KDE’s metrics, not Linux desktop users overall. How to decide which session to use
Choose based on your actual setup rather than assuming one session is universally faster, more secure, or better. The available evidence here does not establish a broad performance or security ranking, or certify every app, driver, capture tool, accessibility feature, and compositor.

- Check session availability. Look up the release notes or login options for your distribution and desktop. An X11 session may no longer be offered for one desktop while remaining available for another.
- Check the applications and features you need. Find out whether each important app runs natively on Wayland or through Xwayland, and verify the particular features you use with your compositor and distribution.
- Look for X11-specific dependencies. If your workflow relies on an X11-only window manager or desktop integration, confirm that it works in the session you intend to use. Xwayland supports legacy applications, not every X11 desktop component as an independent part of the Wayland desktop.
- Test before changing a working setup. If both sessions are available, try the Wayland session and exercise your normal workflow. If a required feature fails, check whether your distribution still provides an X.org session for your desktop.
Can I run X11 applications on Wayland?
Often, yes: Xwayland enables many legacy X11 applications to run within a Wayland session, alongside native Wayland apps. It is a compatibility path, not a guarantee that every X11-specific behavior or desktop integration will work unchanged.
