For most people starting from zero, Python is the better first language. Its clear syntax and high-level data structures can let you focus sooner on solving problems and building small programs. Choose C first if your course requires it or your goal is to explore concepts such as pointers, declared types, and how source files are translated into executables. Neither choice locks you out of learning the other later.
Should you learn C or Python first?
Start with Python if you want a general introduction to programming and do not have a course or project that calls for a particular language. Start with C if it is required by your curriculum or you specifically want to encounter lower-level programming concepts early.
This is a recommendation based on the languages’ documented features and intended teaching use—not a measured claim that one language produces better learning outcomes. Both are programming languages; they simply make different details prominent at the start.
How Python and C differ for a beginner
| Decision point | Python | C |
|---|---|---|
| What may occupy your attention early | Python’s official materials describe its syntax as clear and the language as easy to learn. Its high-level data structures can help beginners focus on problem-solving tasks. | You encounter explicit language concepts such as types and pointers, along with the process of translating source files into an executable. |
| Early programming practice | The Python Software Foundation says a beginning course can use Python to focus on problem decomposition and data type design, with loops, procedures, and standard-library projects. | C is a reasonable choice when learning these lower-level details is itself part of your goal or course. |
| Beginner resources established here | Python.org points beginners to tutorials, introductory books, interpreters, and documentation. The interpreter and documentation are free. | The cited C reference documents the language, but is technical documentation rather than a beginner learning path. |
The Python Software Foundation’s General Python FAQ explains its teaching rationale: “Python has a very simple and consistent syntax and a large standard library and, most importantly, using Python in a beginning programming course lets students concentrate on important programming skills such as problem decomposition and data type design.” This is an institutional rationale, not the result of a controlled comparison of beginner outcomes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When Python is the better starting point
- You are new to programming and want to practice breaking a problem into steps, using loops and procedures, and designing data types.
- You want to make small, useful programs while learning general programming ideas.
- You do not have a course or project that specifically requires C.
Python’s beginner guidance and resource links are collected on Python.org’s Python for Beginners page. Use a resource written for first-time programmers, rather than assuming every official document is aimed at that audience.
When C is the better starting point
- Your class, degree program, or instructor requires C.
- Your immediate goal is to study explicit types, pointers, arrays, functions, or source-to-executable translation.
- You have found a C course or tutorial that actually teaches people with no programming background.
C’s language reference describes these constructs and its translation process, but it is not itself a beginner course: cppreference’s C language reference. A course requirement is a practical reason to begin with C even if Python would otherwise be the more comfortable general-purpose introduction.

Choose a course for absolute beginners
The language choice matters, but so does the teaching material. The official Python 3.14 tutorial explicitly says it is intended for programmers new to Python, not people new to programming. If you have never coded before, choose a course or book that assumes no prior experience, whether you pick Python or C.
- Check your immediate goal. Follow a required course language; otherwise, choose Python for a broad first introduction or C for an explicit interest in its lower-level concepts.
- Check the course’s audience. Look for “absolute beginner” or equivalent wording, and confirm it does not assume familiarity with programming basics.
- Write small programs. Practice turning a problem into smaller steps, then use loops, procedures, and suitable data types as you learn them.
- Continue when ready. Learning Python first does not prevent you from learning C later, and beginning with C does not bar you from picking up Python.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—say
A 2016 survey by Ellen Murphy, Tom Crick, and James H. Davenport examined introductory programming courses at 80 UK universities. Its abstract reports that Java was dominant among the surveyed courses and that respondents perceived Python as easier to teach and learn. It was not a C-versus-Python study of learner outcomes, and its age means it should not be treated as a picture of current curricula. Read the survey abstract.

The cited material does not establish that beginners taught Python achieve better results than beginners taught C, or that C is faster for every program. Those claims are not needed to make the practical choice: match the first language to your course, your goal, and the beginner support available to you.
