There is no reliable universal price for developing and maintaining a humanoid robot. Public figures describe different things: prototype estimates, a robot’s bill of materials (BOM), modeled acquisition and annual operating costs, or a vendor’s projected revenue. None is a complete development budget or a cross-vendor maintenance rate. For a real deployment, price the robot and its engineering, integration, software, energy, service, supervision, safety work and downtime separately.

What do published humanoid-robot cost figures measure?

The figures below are not directly interchangeable. A prototype estimate is not a customer quote; a BOM is not the selling price; and a modeled operating cost is not a universal service tariff.

Cost measure Published figure What it covers—and what it does not
Current prototype unit cost $150,000–$500,000 McKinsey & Company’s estimate, with publication date not displayed on the accessed page (accessed 2026). It attributes the high range to overengineered subsystems and immature supply chains. Treat it as an analytical estimate, not a vendor quote or the cost to develop an entire platform.
Digit v4 bill of materials About $125,000 per unit Agility Robotics’ figure in its 2026 SEC-filed company presentation. A BOM is the cost of components and materials as presented by the company, not the customer selling price or total deployed cost.
Digit future BOM goal About $30,000 per unit Agility Robotics’ future goal in the same 2026 SEC-filed presentation; it is not an achieved current cost.
Modeled acquisition and annual operating and maintenance (O&M) About €55,000 acquisition and €5,800 annual O&M per unit Porsche Consulting’s 2026 scenario figures, not a vendor-neutral rate card. Its 1.5–2-year payback estimate assumes 100% performance capacity.
Target product cost for broad labor competition $20,000–$50,000 per unit McKinsey & Company’s stated range for the product cost humanoids would need to reach to compete with human labor in mainstream sectors. This is a viability target, not a general current purchase price.

Currency and basis matter: the figures span dollars and euros, component costs and modeled ownership economics. They do not establish a like-for-like price comparison among robots.

How much does it cost to develop a humanoid robot?

The available public figures do not establish a consistent total R&D budget for developing a humanoid platform. A per-unit prototype estimate or BOM cannot answer that question: neither captures the full program cost of research, software development, tooling, factory setup, deployment engineering or customer-specific integration.

Development expense also depends on what is being built. A platform intended for one repeatable task in a structured workplace is a different engineering undertaking from a general-purpose robot expected to handle varied environments and tasks. The public figures above do not provide a comparable budget by task, capability or development stage, so a precise all-in development cost cannot be inferred from them.

What parts drive the robot’s unit cost?

In McKinsey & Company’s generalized BOM analysis, actuation is the largest identified cost block. Its shares are broad estimates, not a breakdown for every robot:

  • Actuation: about 40–60%. This includes motors, gearboxes, joint assemblies, sensors and drivers.
  • Perception and compute: about 10–20%.
  • Mechanical structure: about 10–15%.
  • Power: about 5–10%.
  • Wiring, connectors and controls: about 5–10%.

Early systems can also use more sensing and computing than a particular job requires. Bespoke, low-volume parts and labor-intensive wiring and integration add expense. McKinsey identifies task-scoped designs, modular joints, fewer parts, simpler harnesses, standardized platforms, serviceability, and right-sized perception and compute as possible ways to reduce cost or downtime. These are potential cost-reduction levers, not guaranteed savings for a specific model.

What does it cost to run and maintain one?

The clearest public annual figure in the available evidence is Porsche Consulting’s approximately €5,800 per unit for O&M in its 2026 modeled case. The source does not establish a comparable, itemized cross-vendor schedule for parts, labor, energy and downtime. Do not apply that scenario estimate to every humanoid or assume it includes the same services as a supplier’s contract.

Before comparing operating costs, request written terms that specify:

  • What preventive maintenance, repairs and spare parts are included, and how replacements are priced.
  • Support response times, warranty coverage and battery replacement assumptions.
  • Software, remote monitoring and other recurring fees.
  • The uptime definition, exclusions and any service-level commitments.
  • Required human supervision, training, safety validation and commissioning effort.
  • Energy use, expected utilization and how downtime is handled in the cost model.

These items can materially change the cost of a deployment even when the robot’s acquisition price is unchanged.

Is renting a humanoid robot cheaper than buying one?

Not necessarily. Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) can reduce the upfront capital requirement by charging for access and service over time, but whether it costs less overall depends on the contract, utilization and what is included. Ownership may involve an upfront purchase plus recurring software and service fees.

Agility Robotics’ 2026 SEC-filed presentation says most of its secured Digit v5 orders are under RaaS and describes RaaS as recurring revenue. The presentation estimates five-year cumulative revenue of about $500,000 under RaaS and about $400,000 under ownership over a five-year useful life. Those are the company’s revenue assumptions—not a customer’s total cost of ownership or an independent finding that one model is cheaper.

What deployment evidence can—and cannot—say about cost

Porsche Consulting reports that Figure F.02 was used at BMW’s Spartanburg plant for eleven months, completing more than 1,250 operating hours and moving over 90,000 car-body components. It also reports that Digit moved more than 100,000 containers at a GXO logistics center. These examples demonstrate reported deployments, but they are not independent comparisons of lifetime costs or proof that another site will achieve the same utilization or economics.

Porsche Consulting says early humanoid use is concentrated in repetitive, physically demanding work in structured environments, and that humanoids have not yet reached industrial maturity across the MedTech applications it cites. It estimates potential MedTech production savings of about €14.3 billion by 2030; that is sector-wide potential, not realized savings or a forecast for an individual buyer.

Hyundai Motor Group announced planned production capacity of 30,000 robots per year by 2028. That is a capacity goal, not proof of current output or a guaranteed reduction in unit cost. Its January 2026 plan is phased: Atlas deployment is intended to begin with validated tasks in 2028 and expand toward component assembly by 2030. Those future milestones do not establish present-day operating economics.

How should a business build a realistic budget?

Request a platform-specific quotation and separate one-time and recurring costs. When comparing systems, make sure the proposals use the same task, payload, work environment, utilization and currency assumptions.

  1. Define the work. Specify the task, payload, operating hours, shifts, environment and performance target. A business case for a narrow, repetitive task should not assume general-purpose capability.
  2. Separate upfront costs. List acquisition or lease charges, site changes, integration, commissioning, safety validation, training and any customer-specific engineering.
  3. Itemize recurring costs. Price software, support, preventive maintenance, repair labor, parts, batteries, energy, supervision and any monitoring subscription.
  4. Model usable capacity, not theoretical capacity. State expected utilization, demonstrated uptime, human oversight and downtime assumptions. If estimating labor savings, disclose wages, shifts and the work actually displaced or reassigned.
  5. Compare contract terms and evidence. Check warranty, service inclusions, response times, termination rights, ownership at contract end and how uptime is measured. Distinguish observed deployment results from future production or performance plans.

A credible comparison requires the same cost basis—R&D, BOM, quoted price or total operating cost—and the same assumptions for task, safety and commissioning effort, service, utilization and ownership. Where a supplier has not provided an itemized figure, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with another company’s estimate.
