A mouse wheel that skips, reverses, or scrolls unpredictably can be caused by debris or a faulty wheel, but settings, software, and the connection can produce similar symptoms. Work through the checks below in order: start with the app and wheel, then settings and connection, and finally test the mouse on another computer before deciding whether it needs service.
Identify what “erratic scrolling” means
Notice whether the wheel skips steps, briefly scrolls in the opposite direction, moves too far per notch, works only in some apps, or does not scroll at all. Try the mouse in another application and on a different page or document. If the problem is limited to one app or page, check that app’s behavior before changing mouse settings or assuming the wheel is faulty.
Check the wheel and clean around it
- Check movement. Turn the wheel gently and see whether it moves freely or feels stuck. Do not force it.
- Clean externally. Logitech Support recommends using compressed air around the wheel for its supported mice. Follow the product label and keep the cleaning external unless the manufacturer provides model-specific instructions.
Cleaning may clear an obstruction, but it cannot be assumed to fix a worn or failed mechanism. Logitech’s guidance does not establish a universal disassembly or encoder-repair procedure. See Logitech’s scroll and gesture troubleshooting and its guidance for a stuck or unresponsive scroll wheel.
Review wheel settings
Windows 11
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse. Check the wheel action (multiple lines or one screen), the number of lines to scroll per notch, the scrolling direction, and whether inactive windows scroll when you hover over them. Microsoft documents these controls in Change mouse settings.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Windows 10
Open Windows mouse settings and review the wheel’s scrolling direction and amount, as well as the option for scrolling inactive windows. The available controls and wording can vary by Windows version; Microsoft describes the settings for Windows 10 and Windows 11 on the same mouse-settings page.
Manufacturer software
If your mouse has configuration software, check its scroll or gesture controls. For Logitech devices, Logitech Support recommends reviewing the applicable settings; its stuck-wheel instructions specifically suggest disabling Smooth Scrolling in Logitech Options. The control may differ by mouse model and software version, so use the settings available for your device. A setting can change direction, speed, or which window responds; it does not repair a mechanical fault. Microsoft also points Surface mouse users to Windows mouse settings for wheel behavior and customization in its Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting.

Reconnect the mouse and check its software state
- Disconnect and reconnect a wired mouse. For a wireless mouse, reconnect or re-pair it using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If the mouse uses a USB receiver, plug the receiver directly into the computer rather than through a hub, extender, or switch. On Windows, try another USB port.
- If the manufacturer provides firmware for your exact model, follow its current instructions rather than installing firmware intended for another device.
Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance includes trying another USB port and connecting a receiver directly to the computer. If changing ports affects the behavior, the computer’s USB chipset driver may be relevant; this is a lead to investigate, not proof that the driver is the cause.
Test the mouse on another computer
Try the same mouse on a second computer and check the same kind of scrolling. If the problem disappears, investigate the original computer’s settings, connection, or software; Logitech notes that a USB chipset driver may be involved when a mouse works on another Windows computer. If the symptom follows the mouse, a hardware issue becomes more plausible, but the test does not identify a specific failed part.

When to seek service or replace the mouse
If the wheel still behaves erratically after external cleaning, settings checks, reconnecting, and testing on another computer, consult support and warranty information for the exact model. Repairability, compatible parts, and warranty coverage depend on the device; the steps above do not establish a universal encoder replacement procedure. Consider replacement only if model-specific service is unavailable or unsuitable.
If you do replace it, compare the connection type and operating-system support, whether the wheel has tactile steps or a free-spin mode, the available configuration software, warranty, and repairability. There is no single replacement choice established for every user or mouse setup.
