Use LiveKit’s lk.transcription text stream to display a voice agent’s live transcript in Flutter. For a new integration, the managed Session API and its default TranscriptionStreamReceiver provide the simplest route; render each transcript segment by its stable ID so partial updates update the right row instead of creating duplicates.
Use the current text-stream path
LiveKit Agents sends transcript text to clients on the lk.transcription topic. In Flutter, the current Session API uses a TranscriptionStreamReceiver for that topic by default. The receiver exposes transcript messages for the UI, and Session extends ChangeNotifier, so Flutter widgets can observe updates. The receiver’s text-stream support requires livekit-agents >= 1.0.0.
Start from LiveKit’s Flutter SDK and Flutter voice AI quickstart. The SDK overview gives livekit_client: ^2.13.0 as an installation example and supports connections to LiveKit Cloud or a self-hosted server. The quickstart is a base for session setup and links a cross-platform voice agent starter. Match any code you use to the version resolved in your app’s lockfile.
Choose a session receiver or a custom handler
Use Session when your app can adopt its room-connection, agent-dispatch, and message lifecycle. If the app already owns room connections differently, a custom room-level handler for lk.transcription may fit better and gives you control over message handling. In either case, read streams defensively: LiveKit notes that a stream read can fail partway through, so catch errors in a custom handler.

Do not build a new text-stream implementation around the older TranscriptionReceived event or publish_transcription(). LiveKit marks these APIs deprecated for this workflow; they use a separate delivery mechanism, and publishing on lk.transcription does not trigger that event.
Render partial and final transcript updates without duplicates
Use the receiver’s message history and updates to drive your transcript view. Keep one row per segment and use ReceivedMessage.id as the row key. The receiver uses lk.segment_id as that ID, falling back to the text stream ID when no segment ID is present.

- Agent output: the agent emits a new text stream for each message, with chunks to append until the transcript is finalized.
- User input: an update may resend the full text for the segment. Replace that segment’s displayed text rather than appending the update to the previous value.
- Partial-state cleanup: when a new segment arrives for the same participant, the receiver removes older partial segments, keeping its partial transcript state bounded.
- Finality: the stream can mark a transcript final with
lk_transcription_final. The Flutter model accepts a boolean or several string forms; verify exact accepted types against the installed package. The TranscriptionAttributes reference identifies itself aslivekit_client2.12.0.
Show interim text as provisional until it is final. The agent-side user_input_transcribed event includes transcript text and an is_final boolean; speaker_id is available only when the STT plugin supports diarization, and the event may also include language. This event is useful for agent logic; Flutter clients receive transcript text through the text-stream path.
Configure transcript output and synchronization on the agent
LiveKit Agents publishes STT transcriptions to the frontend in real time and, with AgentSession, publishes agent speech text alongside playback by default. The stream is sent on lk.transcription; it includes lk.transcribed_track_id, and its sender identity is the participant whose speech was transcribed.

By default, agent transcript text is synchronized with speech and appears word by word as audio plays. If the agent is interrupted, the transcript stops and is truncated to match the spoken output. Choose unsynchronized output if the interface should show text as soon as it is available rather than follow playback. LiveKit documents sync_transcription=False for Python text output options and syncTranscription: false for Node.js output options. The documentation does not quantify the latency difference.
To disable transcript output, LiveKit documents text_output=False in Python RoomOptions or transcriptionEnabled: false in Node.js outputOptions. If no text appears, check that agent text output is enabled and that it publishes on lk.transcription.

Add timing-aware captions only when the output supports them
For timing data, LiveKit documents use_tts_aligned_transcript=True in Python and useTtsAlignedTranscript: true in Node.js. Timing is relative to the start of the agent’s current turn. LiveKit labels the transcription_node and TimedString implementation experimental, and formatting can be lost depending on the TTS provider.
Cartesia, ElevenLabs, Rime, and Speechify plugins are listed as supporting word-level transcription timing. LiveKit Inference and other providers may use sentence-level alignment; providers that do not emit timed chunks can still send text without timing fields. The documented chunk format always has text; start_time and end_time appear when the chunk is a TimedString. Confirm the selected provider’s actual output before implementing word highlighting.

Handle missing or delayed final transcripts
LiveKit documents an optional transcription timeout for cases where voice activity detection detects speech but STT does not return a final transcript in time. The timeout is off by default and requires VAD and STT. If delayed finalization matters to your app, configure agent-side timeout handling; on the Flutter side, keep interim text provisional instead of treating silence or a delayed final update as proof that the user said nothing.
Check API versions before integrating
LiveKit’s Flutter SDK overview currently displays livekit_client 2.13.0, while the separate TranscriptionEvent reference identifies version 2.11.0 and the TranscriptionAttributes page identifies version 2.12.0. These references do not all describe the same package version. Use your resolved dependency and its matching API documentation as the authority for exact types and method signatures.
