A Tesla’s advertised range is a standardized EPA estimate, not a promise of how far it will travel on every charge. Your actual range depends on speed, weather, route, climate use, tires, vehicle load and battery condition. Tesla’s kilometer display is based on EPA certification rather than your personal driving, so it can fall faster or slower than the distance on the odometer.
What Tesla’s advertised range measures
In the United States, EPA range is a label estimate derived from laboratory testing. The EPA says testing is conducted on a dynamometer using city and highway driving cycles; manufacturers may also use a multi-cycle procedure. Test results are adjusted for conditions the lab cycles do not fully represent, such as air-conditioning use, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving. The EPA describes a commonly used adjustment factor of 0.7, not a fixed Tesla-specific discount. Adjusted city and highway values are combined using 55% city and 45% highway weighting. EPA: Fuel Economy and EV Range Testing.
The EPA says its test procedures account for approximately 15% of all test results. Manufacturers provide labeling data under specified procedures and submit data for their models each year. Ratings are useful for comparing vehicles and configurations, but not as a guarantee for a particular journey. The EPA also updates fuel-economy methods over time, so comparisons across model years should account for the applicable method and vehicle configuration. EPA: Basic Information on Fuel Economy Labeling.
MPGe is an energy-consumption measure expressed in gasoline-equivalent terms; for plug-in vehicles, EPA values include charging losses. It is not a prediction of the miles a particular driver will get from a charge.

Why actual range changes from drive to drive
Range depends on how much energy the car uses under the conditions of a specific trip. These factors can affect consumption, but they do not add up to a reliable formula for predicting an exact range loss.
Speed and acceleration
Higher speeds increase aerodynamic drag, and hard acceleration uses more energy. Smooth driving at lower speeds can improve efficiency, all else being equal.

Weather and cabin temperature
Cold, rain, snow and wind can increase energy use or rolling resistance. Heating the cabin and managing battery temperature use energy; cold can also limit regenerative braking. Tesla says its heat pump, where fitted, recovers heat to reduce the energy needed for cabin heating.
Cold-weather effects can be substantial, but a broad figure should not be mistaken for a Tesla-specific prediction: the EPA reports that EV range could decrease by about 40% on average because of cold temperatures and heater use, citing AAA’s February 2019 Electric Vehicle Range Testing Report. That average does not predict the result for a particular Tesla, temperature, trip or driver. EPA: Electric Vehicle Myths.

Route, stops and terrain
Climbing hills takes energy to overcome gravity. Short trips and frequent stops in extreme temperatures can also use energy for climate control while the car is not moving.
Tires, wheels, cargo and accessories
Tire pressure and rolling resistance matter. Aftermarket wheels or tires, roof and bike racks, trailers, open windows, and extra cargo can increase energy use, including through added drag.

Parked energy use and battery age
Sentry Mode, climate features, preconditioning while unplugged and other systems can consume energy while the car is parked. Separately, Tesla says natural battery aging and energy use gradually reduce the maximum range available at a full charge.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the displayed range may not match miles driven
Tesla’s support guidance explains that the kilometer range display is based on EPA certification, not an owner’s driving pattern. As a result, the displayed estimate and odometer measure different things: the display reflects a standardized efficiency basis, while the distance traveled records the trip. If the car uses more energy per kilometer than that basis assumes, the displayed range can decrease faster than the distance driven; if it uses less, it can decrease more slowly. Tesla addresses this directly in its support question, “Why is my displayed estimated range decreasing faster than kilometers driven?” Tesla: Range Tips.

For an estimate tied more closely to your own use, Tesla’s Energy app can show consumption by components, driving behavior and environmental conditions; compare actual energy use with a trip projection and battery indicator; and display recent average consumption over selected distances. For a journey, consider the vehicle’s navigation or trip projection and recent energy use alongside the nominal range display.
How to compare range estimates fairly
Use the EPA-rated figure to compare vehicle configurations on a standardized basis. Use a trip-specific projection and recent consumption to judge a particular route. When comparing two actual trips, keep the conditions as similar as practical:
- Starting charge and route, including elevation
- Speed, traffic and driving style
- Temperature, wind and precipitation
- Cabin climate use
- Passenger and cargo load
- Wheel and tire configuration
A difference between trips does not, by itself, show that the battery has changed; these conditions can alter energy consumption.
When a range drop may point to battery degradation
A low estimate on a cold day or after a high-speed drive is not, on its own, evidence of battery failure. Temporary trip-to-trip variation and a gradual reduction in the maximum range available at full charge are different issues. Tesla says the vehicle will notify an owner if a hardware issue is causing excessive battery or range degradation. Vehicles equipped with the feature may also offer a Battery Health Test in the service menu. Do not diagnose battery health from a dashboard estimate alone. Tesla: Range Tips.

Practical checks for better efficiency
- Check tire pressure against the vehicle’s recommended pressure.
- Remove roof or bike racks when they are not needed, and avoid unnecessary cargo.
- Use recent consumption and the trip projection for journey planning instead of treating the nominal range as a trip guarantee.
- Account for weather, route elevation, speed and cabin heating when estimating how much charge a trip will use.
