Before updating, check your Pixel’s Google backup, verify Google Photos separately, and protect important app data using each app’s own backup or export option. A backup reduces data-loss risk, but it does not guarantee that every app’s data can be recovered.
1. Check your Pixel’s Google Account backup
- Connect your phone to a reliable network and make sure it has enough charge to complete the backup and update. These are practical precautions, not Pixel-specific requirements published for updates.
- Open Settings > Google services > Backup. Menu labels can vary by Pixel model and Android version.
- Review Backup details to see what is included and check the backup information shown on the page.
- If appropriate, tap Back up now. Return to the page afterward and check the current backup information; tapping the control does not mean the process has finished. Google says the process can take up to 24 hours to complete fully (Google Android backup help).
Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the data that can be backed up to a Google Account. RCS messages are backed up when you use Google Messages; call settings and blocked numbers are backed up when you use Phone by Google. Google cautions that “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.”
2. Verify Google Photos separately
Photos and videos use Google Photos rather than being something to assume is covered by the device-backup status. Open Google Photos and check the backup status at the top of the library. Wait until it says “Backup complete” before proceeding (Google Photos backup help).
If media in screenshots, downloads, or messaging-app folders matters to you, review which device folders are selected for backup. Google Photos shares Google Account storage with Google Drive and Gmail, so a full account can prevent additional items from being backed up.

3. Protect data in important apps
For banking, authenticator, messaging, notes, or other high-value apps, check the app’s own account-sync, backup, or export settings. Follow its instructions for saving data or ensuring you can sign back in. Do not assume the Google device backup includes an app’s private data or credentials: Google explicitly notes that app backup and restore support varies.
4. Check available Google Account storage
Google’s Android Help page, accessed in 2026, says a Google Account includes 15 GB at no charge; additional storage is available through Google One (Google Android backup help). The allowance is shared with Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail, so check the account’s available space before relying on cloud backup. Google’s published allowance can change.

5. Optional: make a local copy of selected files
If you want another copy of files on a computer, connect the Pixel by USB and copy the files you choose. Use a cable that supports data transfer and a computer with a matching port; Google documents the transfer method but does not recommend a particular cable (Android file transfer help). After copying, open the files on the computer to confirm they are there. This manual copy is optional and does not replace app-specific backup steps.

6. Install the update after your checks
When the backup information is current, Photos reports “Backup complete,” and you have handled any important app-specific data, proceed with the Android update using the on-screen instructions. The cited Google backup guidance does not establish that installing an update requires a factory reset or routinely erases user data; these precautions are for reducing risk, not because an update is known to wipe the phone.
