You can use a controller with many classic PC games, but the right setup depends on how the game accepts input. If it supports a joystick, configure DOSBox to present the controller as one and calibrate it. If the game only accepts keyboard input, map controller buttons and directions to the keys the game already uses.
First, find out how the game handles input
Check the game’s manual, options menu, or setup program for joystick or controller settings. That determines which of two approaches to use:
- Native joystick support: Enable the joystick option in the game, then configure DOSBox to emulate a joystick.
- Keyboard-only controls: Leave the game configured for keyboard input and map controller buttons and directions to the game’s keyboard keys.
These routes are not interchangeable. Making a controller visible as a joystick will not help if the game only reads keyboard input.
Use DOSBox joystick emulation for games with joystick support
DOSBox v0.74-3 uses the joysticktype setting in its [joystick] configuration section to choose how joystick input is presented to the DOS game. The manual lists none, auto, 2axis, 4axis, and second-controller variants. In that manual, auto is the default; it chooses an emulated mode based on whether one or two controllers are detected. These modes do not guarantee that a particular game supports every axis or button. See the DOSBox v0.74-3 manual.

If the game offers joystick settings, enable them there too. DOSBox’s manual recommends calibrating in both the operating system and the game or its setup program when available. Calibration helps the game interpret the controller’s range and center position.
Troubleshoot joystick problems
- Check that the operating system detects the controller before launching the game.
- Run the game’s own joystick calibration routine, if it has one.
- If a game still has joystick issues, DOSBox’s manual suggests trying
timed=false. Treat it as a troubleshooting option, not a setting that fixes every game.
Map the controller to keyboard keys for keyboard-only games
DOSBox’s mapper lets you bind controller events to keyboard events. Open it with Ctrl+F1, or start DOSBox with the -startmapper argument. The mapper displays virtual keyboard and joystick controls; choose a keyboard action and bind it to the matching controller direction or button. - Find the keys the game uses for movement and actions in its controls menu or manual.
- Open the DOSBox mapper and select the virtual keyboard key for an action, such as an arrow key.
- Add a binding, then press the controller direction or button you want to use for that action.
- Repeat for the other keys you need, then test the controls in the game.
DOSBox Staging also provides a key mapper for assigning gamepad buttons to keyboard actions. Its documentation says to open it with Ctrl+F1 on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+F1 on macOS. A game-specific example is GOG’s Mortal Kombat 2 support guide: it describes selecting a keyboard control such as the Up Arrow, adding a binding, and pressing the controller input to assign it. What to expect from a USB controller
A wired USB gamepad is a reasonable device to try because DOSBox Staging 0.83 documents automatic detection of modern USB controllers and mapping them to the emulated analog joystick. That does not ensure every game, DOSBox version, or launch setup will work with every controller. If the game lacks joystick support, use keyboard mapping instead. Steam Input can add another controller-configuration layer, but the chosen input style must suit what the game and its DOSBox wrapper receive. Valve warns that a configuration may not work if the game does not support the selected input style; consult Steam Support’s controller configuration guidance.

On Windows, Steamworks documents that the Steam overlay hooks traditional gamepad APIs—including XInput, DirectInput, RawInput, and Windows.Gaming.Input—and injects an emulated Xbox controller device. That behavior does not by itself establish which input mode a particular game or DOSBox wrapper will handle. See Steamworks controller documentation.
