An Excel-like web app is not one component: it is an editable grid, a workbook data model, a formula calculator, a rendering and data-loading strategy, and—if needed—persistence and collaboration. Keep those decisions separate. That makes it easier to match each layer to the product’s requirements instead of expecting a single spreadsheet library to solve everything.
Which parts make up a spreadsheet-like web app?
Start by deciding what the app must let people do, then assign each responsibility to a layer. A grid can present and edit cells without owning the durable workbook format; a formula engine can calculate values without rendering a grid; and a collaboration library can synchronize changes without defining what a spreadsheet edit means.
Grid and interaction
The grid handles what users see and do: cell navigation, selection, editing, formatting, keyboard behavior, and often clipboard operations. A prebuilt grid can provide many of these interaction primitives. For example, Handsontable documents spreadsheet-style formula integration through its Formulas plugin, which uses HyperFormula. That establishes an integration path, not a neutral finding about implementation cost or accessibility. Check the component against your own framework, keyboard, accessibility, selection, extension, and licensing requirements. Handsontable formula calculation and its Formulas API describe that integration.
A custom renderer gives you more control over behavior and appearance, but your team then owns the cell-editor lifecycle, selection model, clipboard, keyboard navigation, accessibility, and performance edge cases. Choose it when those controls justify the extra implementation and maintenance work.

Workbook model
The workbook model is the app’s representation of the document, whether or not users ever see it directly. Make its ownership explicit. Decide whether the grid’s internal state is canonical, or whether the grid is only a presentation layer over an application-owned model.
A durable model commonly needs to represent sheets, cell coordinates or stable identifiers, raw values, formulas, formatting, and structural operations such as inserting or deleting rows. Row arrays may be convenient to render, but references and structural changes can make simplistic storage difficult to maintain. Test insert, delete, and move operations, plus import/export round trips, against representative workbooks before settling on a format.
Formula calculation
Formula evaluation is a separate responsibility from drawing cells. HyperFormula is a TypeScript spreadsheet engine documented for use as a headless library in a browser or through Node.js. Handsontable’s formula plugin uses it, but the engine can also be considered separately from the grid, subject to integration and licensing constraints. HyperFormula’s repository describes its scope and licensing.

Calculation is more than evaluating a string in one cell. HyperFormula’s key concepts documentation describes parsing formulas into syntax trees, building a dependency graph, ordering calculation work, and evaluating cells. That graph supports recalculation when inputs change; cyclic references need deliberate handling.

HyperFormula’s documentation describes its function set as approximately 400 built-in functions; Handsontable’s current documentation result names 386 built-in functions, with no year stated. These are vendor-published feature counts, not independent benchmarks or evidence of complete behavioral equivalence. Validate the exact functions and behaviors your users need, including cross-sheet references, custom functions, dates, errors, volatile formulas, locale, and import/export fidelity.
Should the grid load and calculate the whole workbook?
Rendering, data loading, browser memory, and formula recalculation are related, but they are separate costs. A grid can render only the visible portion of data while the browser still holds a much larger workbook in memory; conversely, a remote data source can limit what is loaded without solving how formulas reference cells that have not been fetched.

Render only what is visible
AG Grid documents DOM virtualization: visible rows and columns, plus a row buffer, are rendered; elements are added and removed as the viewport moves. Its example uses 1,000 records by 20 columns and shows 50 rows by 10 columns visible to illustrate why creating DOM for every cell can be excessive. This is an explanatory example, not a performance benchmark. AG Grid’s DOM virtualization documentation explains the behavior.
When evaluating a grid, include row and column virtualization, buffering, variable row heights, pinned regions, merged cells, and keyboard navigation in the workload. Benchmark with representative data in the browsers and devices you support; the cited documentation does not establish a universal threshold for switching architectures.
Load rows remotely when appropriate
For data that should not all be loaded into the browser, AG Grid’s Infinite Row Model documents a remote datasource that supplies rows as needed. The Infinite Row Model documentation describes that approach. It still leaves product decisions about server-side filtering and sorting, aggregation, edit consistency, and formulas that refer to unloaded cells.

Before choosing remote loading, decide which layer owns queries and calculations, what users should see while more rows arrive, and how edits are reconciled with server data. Virtualization reduces rendered DOM; it does not by itself reduce network payloads, in-memory workbook state, or formula-engine work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should the app save work and support offline editing?
Persist the canonical workbook
For a single-user app that is normally online, server-side persistence of versioned workbook state may be sufficient. Choose a format that can be migrated as the product changes, and define how saves, failures, and recovery work. The canonical format should preserve the data and structural details needed to reopen a workbook, rather than depending accidentally on transient grid state.
Add local persistence for offline sessions
Yjs’s y-indexeddb provider stores document updates in browser IndexedDB and loads them in later sessions. This can preserve local edits across a browser restart, but it is local persistence—not a backup or a way to recover work after device loss. A product that needs cross-device access or durable shared documents still needs server synchronization and a recovery design. Yjs’s y-indexeddb documentation describes the local provider.

What does collaboration require beyond synchronization?
Yjs provides shared CRDT types that can be changed concurrently, along with network integrations and persistence providers. Its introduction states, “The order in which document updates are applied doesn’t matter.” That describes update application in Yjs; it does not decide the product-level meaning of every spreadsheet operation. Yjs’s introduction explains its synchronization model.
Before promising collaborative editing, specify the behavior users should get for each kind of change:
- When two people edit the same cell, does one value win, or should the app expose a conflict?
- Are range edits atomic, and what happens when one user changes a formula while another changes one of its inputs?
- How do row, column, and sheet insertions, deletions, or moves interact with cell references?
- How should undo behave when remote edits arrive between a user’s own actions?
- How are permissions, presence, snapshots, server durability, and recovery handled?
A synchronization library can merge document updates, but the application still has to define authorization and the semantics of edits to cells, ranges, formulas, sheet structure, and workbook metadata.
How should you choose the architecture?
Use the requirements below to compare implementations. These are decision criteria, not a vendor ranking: the available documentation does not provide a neutral side-by-side performance comparison.

Check HyperFormula’s repository for its stated licensing options.
A practical design is often modular: select the grid for interaction requirements, define the workbook model you need to preserve, choose a calculator based on tested formula coverage, then add remote loading, local persistence, or collaboration only where product needs call for them. Test the boundaries between layers—especially structural edits, formula references, import/export, and recovery—because that is where individually capable components can still fail to make a coherent spreadsheet app.
