Usually, no—not unless you have validated the exact source transformation against your project and Go toolchain. Go comments can control file selection and compiler behavior, so a generic source minifier that removes or moves comments may change the program that gets built. If your goal is a smaller executable, keep the Go source unchanged and consider Go’s linker options for removing debug metadata instead.

What “minify” means matters

Source minification rewrites .go files before compilation, typically to remove whitespace or comments. Binary stripping happens after compilation: Go’s linker options can omit selected debugging metadata from the executable. These operations have different risks and results; stripping a binary does not require rewriting Go source.

Why source minification can affect a Go build

Go comments are not all merely explanatory. The compiler documentation says, “The compiler accepts directives in the form of comments.” The Go command documentation also describes build constraints and build tags, which determine which files are included in a build. A transformation that removes such comments or changes their placement can therefore affect file selection or compilation.

This is a reason to validate a particular transformation, not proof that every whitespace-only formatter breaks Go. The Go documentation does not certify arbitrary third-party minifiers for every project, and no specific minifier has been evaluated here.

If your goal is a smaller executable

Use the linker options designed to omit debug information rather than minifying source. The Go FAQ says that a program compiled with gc can be linked with -ldflags=-w to disable DWARF generation and remove debugging information “with no other loss of functionality.” It says the reduction can be substantial but gives no percentage. See the Go FAQ.

The linker reference documents these options:

Option Documented effect Trade-off
-ldflags=-w Omits the DWARF symbol table. Less debug information is available for analysis.
-ldflags=-s Omits the symbol table and debug information; implies -w. Removes more symbol/debug metadata, limiting what is available for diagnosis.

These options describe linker behavior, not a guaranteed size reduction for a particular application. The cited documentation does not provide a measured comparison or a percentage. Compare your ordinary release build with the flagged build using the same Go version, target platform, tags, and release configuration.

If your concern is local filesystem paths

-trimpath addresses a different issue: the Go command reference describes it as removing filesystem paths from the resulting executable. It is not source minification, and the documented behavior should not be read as a guarantee that every potentially identifying datum is removed.

Validate the exact production artifact

  1. Keep the source unchanged initially. Establish a baseline using the normal build and release configuration.
  2. Choose the option that matches your goal. Use linker flags when seeking a smaller binary; evaluate -trimpath separately when recorded local paths are the concern. If testing a source rewrite, treat that specific transformation as a change to the build inputs.
  3. Build with the production settings. Use the exact Go version, build tags, generation steps, target platforms, and release configuration intended for deployment.
  4. Run the normal tests and release checks against the resulting artifact. Confirm the expected files and behavior are present, especially across relevant platform- or tag-specific builds.
  5. Retain diagnostic material if needed. Because stripping removes debugging information, keep an unstripped build or suitable debug artifacts when production troubleshooting requires them.

Minification is not a source-confidentiality guarantee

Neither rewriting Go source nor removing binary debug metadata should be presented as a reliable way to make compiled software impossible to inspect. The cited Go documentation explains what these flags remove, but does not establish that minification or stripping guarantees confidentiality.
