Use layered screening, not a single “bot test.” Restrict open access to the main survey where practical, compare information across recruitment and study stages, combine relevant quality checks, and reserve identity verification for cases where the study’s risks justify the extra burden. A suspicious answer or failed check is a reason to review a response—not proof that its author is fraudulent.
Decide what you need to detect
“Fraudulent participation” covers different problems: automated submissions, duplicate entries, false eligibility claims, AI-written answers, and people presenting a false or borrowed identity. A CAPTCHA may impede some automated access; it cannot establish that a respondent is eligible or that their identity is genuine. Likewise, an identity check does not show that a person answered attentively.
Before recruitment, identify which threats could undermine this study and what evidence would justify a closer review. The appropriate checks depend on the study’s sensitivity, incentives, population, and verification needs. University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass) and Lehigh University both recommend multiple methods rather than reliance on a single signal (UMass guidance; Lehigh guidance).
Build a screening workflow
1. Limit access to the main survey
When feasible, avoid posting the main survey link publicly. Instead, direct prospective participants to a brief screener or ask them to contact the study team, confirm eligibility, and then send the main survey link individually. Compare relevant eligibility answers with later responses to spot inconsistencies. This reduces open access but does not guarantee that every invited person is genuine.

If individualized links are tied to participants’ email addresses, explain that practice in the consent form. Lehigh also advises that screening and data-cleaning procedures be standardized and transparent (Lehigh guidance).
2. Combine study-relevant quality checks
Use more than one kind of check, such as an attention check, consistency checks across related or rephrased questions, a review for duplicate entries, completion-time review, and an open-text question relevant to the study. A follow-up prompt tied to a participant’s earlier answer or a specific, recent experience can make responses more informative than a generic request for free-form writing.

Compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 and higher / Windows 7, 10 & 11, Pro / Android 4.0 or higher / Linux 2.6.24 / Chrome OS 29.0.1547 / Ubuntu Version 10.04 or above. Not compatible with XBOX/PS4/PS5.
Do not treat polished, fluent, or lengthy text as proof of authenticity. Generative AI can produce plausible answers quickly, so writing style alone is not a reliable screen. Interpret each check in context: a fast completion, unusual answer, or inconsistency can warrant human review, but none establishes fraud by itself (UMass guidance; Lehigh guidance).
3. Review timing, duplicates, and metadata carefully
Timestamps and, where justified, IP addresses, browser or device details, and location consistency may help identify patterns—for example, repeated entries or unusually uniform completion times. These are contextual clues, not stand-alone identity checks. Network conditions, accessibility tools, disability, language proficiency, and unfamiliarity with research can affect response patterns, so avoid rejecting someone on the basis of one behavioral signal.

- Webcam comes with privacy shutter – puts you in control of what you show and protects the lens with a snugly fitting cover. Does not include the 3-month XSplit VCam license.
- Full HD 1080P video calls – premium video quality that makes you look like a Pro
- Full HD 1080P video Recording – a glass lens and full HD mean your recorded videos are crisp and vibrantly colored
- HD autofocus and light Correction – enjoy razor-sharp high Def in every environment
- Stereo audio with dual mics – capture natural sound on calls and recorded videos
Metadata can identify participants or reveal location and device details. UMass treats IP addresses as identifiers and says collection must be disclosed in consent; Lehigh emphasizes privacy protections and IRB review. Collect only the information the study can justify, explain what it will be used for, and follow the applicable IRB and privacy requirements (UMass guidance; Lehigh guidance).
4. Escalate identity checks in proportion to risk
A photo ID or profile picture is not conclusive: images and documents can be synthetic or altered. A reverse-image search may reveal a recycled or stolen image, but it cannot establish that an image of an apparently nonexistent person is genuine. Live video or audio calls also have limits because deepfake video and cloned voices exist.

For elevated-risk cases, a short synchronous check can add another layer. Consider asking for an unscripted action or phrase supplied in the moment, rather than relying only on a prepared recording. Such checks add friction and may exclude people who cannot readily participate, so match them to the study’s risk and population instead of applying them automatically (UMass guidance).
Match each safeguard to its limits
| Safeguard | Useful signal | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Individual invitation and cross-stage comparison | Can help limit open access and surface inconsistencies between screening and study answers. | Does not prove that an invited participant is genuine or that every answer is truthful. If email-linked links are used, explain this in consent. (Lehigh) |
| Attention, consistency, timing, duplicate, and relevant open-text checks | Can flag responses for closer review when several study-relevant signals converge. | No individual behavior or writing-style signal is definitive; accessibility, language, and connectivity can affect responses. (UMass; Lehigh) |
| Metadata review | May reveal patterns such as repeated submissions or unusually uniform timings. | Does not establish identity, and collection raises privacy and consent obligations. (UMass; Lehigh) |
| Photo ID, image search, or live check | Can add identity evidence, especially when a live check includes an unscripted action. | Documents and images can be altered or synthetic, and video or audio can be spoofed. These steps add participant burden. (UMass) |
| CAPTCHA | May reduce automated enrollment in a particular study. | Does not prevent all deception or guarantee effectiveness in other studies. (iDEAS trial report) |
What one remote trial shows—and what it does not
In the iDEAS randomized trial, which recruited from July 2020 through March 2022, the authors identified 863 of the first 1,142 enrollees—75.6%—as bots. After adding CAPTCHA, they identified no further bots in that trial. They also identified 298 false participants among 5,956 non-bot participants, or 5%, illustrating that automated access and manual deception are different problems. The trial offered compensation of up to £36 (US $39.23) for three follow-up surveys; these figures describe that study’s circumstances, not a general fraud rate or a guaranteed CAPTCHA outcome elsewhere (Journal of Medical Internet Research case study).

Set review, exclusion, and payment rules before collection
Write down in advance what triggers a flag, what combination of evidence can support rejection, when a response will be excluded from analysis instead, how participants can explain an anomaly, and how payment will be handled. Monitor data while collection is active, document decisions consistently, and obtain the required IRB review. Applying the same documented criteria across cases makes decisions more transparent than improvising a rule after seeing a suspicious response (Lehigh guidance).
Distinguish a platform rejection from an analytical exclusion. Prolific’s guidance describes rejection as withholding payment and affecting the participant’s platform record, while analytical exclusion sets data aside but pays the participant. That distinction is specific to Prolific’s platform guidance; payment and participant-record consequences vary by platform, study terms, and applicable rules. A platform authenticity flag is a vendor-specific signal, not a universal finding of fraud; interpret mixed or unavailable results under your predefined procedure (Prolific guidance on flagged responses).
Quick Recap
Keep the process fair and maintainable
- Use several complementary checks, but collect only data needed for a justified screening purpose.
- Make the method accessible to the population you intend to recruit; avoid treating one unusual response pattern as conclusive.
- Separate a signal that calls for review from evidence that supports exclusion or rejection, and document how each decision was reached.
- Revisit procedures periodically as tools for generating and spoofing content change. UMass recommends a layered approach and periodic review because fraud prevention is an evolving problem (UMass guidance).
