Embedded analytics and a self-serve analytics API are not always competing choices. Embedded analytics describes delivering dashboards, reports, or exploration inside your SaaS product; an API is one way to build and control that experience. Choose based on how much customer-facing analytics you need, how much product engineering you want to own, and how you will secure and operate access across customer tenants.
What is the difference?
Embedded analytics puts analytics within the SaaS product interface. At one end, customers view dashboards built by your team. At the other, they can explore data, create reports, or author content themselves.
A self-serve analytics API provides programmatic building blocks that your developers can use to create a more tailored analytics experience. Depending on the platform, embedding may use an iframe, a JavaScript SDK, web components, or API-driven rendering. These approaches can be combined rather than treated as mutually exclusive categories.
How the integration choices compare
| Approach | What it offers | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Iframe | Displays an existing analytics dashboard or experience inside your product. | Can reduce custom frontend work, but offers less control over how the experience fits your interface. |
| SDK or web components | Integrates vendor-provided components into your application. | Can provide a closer product fit and more control, with engineering work to integrate and maintain the components. |
| API-driven integration | Lets your application use APIs to shape or render an analytics experience. | Offers flexibility, but puts more implementation responsibility on your product team. |
These are broad patterns, not guarantees about a particular product. Zoho describes iframe, JavaScript SDK, and API-driven embedding routes in its architecture guidance. Embeddable describes a web-component approach with control over components and layouts on its product site. Confirm the capabilities and limits that apply to the exact platform and plan you are considering.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the customer experience before the integration
If customers mainly need to view reports
Prebuilt dashboards or reports may meet the requirement without exposing authoring tools. An iframe or vendor component may be sufficient if it fits your interface and meets your authentication and tenant-isolation requirements.
If customers need to explore or author
Specify what “self-service” means for each customer role. Viewing a chart, changing filters, editing a report, creating a new report, and publishing content are different levels of access. Tableau describes embedded authoring and developer tools, while Zoho describes end-user authoring and API-driven controls. These vendor descriptions are starting points for evaluation, not proof that a feature suits your governance model.

Decide who can create or modify content, whether changes are private or shared, and how your team will review, support, or roll back customer-created work. More authoring freedom can increase the product’s usefulness, but it also expands the permission and support decisions your team must manage.
Security and tenant isolation need an architecture review
In a multi-tenant SaaS product, analytics must show each customer only the data they are authorized to access. A vendor feature label does not establish that your implementation is safe: the identity flow, authorization rules, tenant scoping, and application configuration all matter.

- Establish how your application passes user identity to the analytics platform and how sessions or tokens are issued, scoped, and revoked.
- Determine where tenant access is enforced, including whether data queries and content permissions are scoped to the correct customer.
- Map roles to permissions: who can view, explore, create, edit, share, or publish analytics.
- Test cross-tenant access attempts and permission changes as part of your own security review.
- Ask how provisioning, customer offboarding, and changes to a user’s role affect analytics access.
Zoho describes SAML or JWT single sign-on and a workspace-per-customer approach for SaaS embedding on its SaaS embedding page. Bold BI lists token-based authentication and row-level security for embedded analytics on its embedded analytics page. Treat these as vendor-described capabilities to validate against your own data model, deployment, and threat scenarios.
Account for engineering and ongoing operations
The integration is only part of the work. Compare the full lifecycle: connecting data, creating and updating content, onboarding tenants, provisioning users, handling permission changes, supporting customers, and upgrading the integration when your product or the analytics platform changes.

Yurbi describes a self-hosted embedded analytics offering for ISVs on its embedded analytics page. Zoho describes multiple deployment configurations in its architecture guidance. These examples do not establish that a particular option meets your requirements; validate the precise hosting and data-handling arrangement.
Compare cost using your own usage assumptions
Pricing models differ, so headline plan prices are not a reliable like-for-like comparison. Yurbi presents named-user tiers, while Embeddable advertises flat pricing. Those are vendor-specific descriptions, not a market-wide benchmark; confirm current plan terms and obtain a quote for the deployment you intend to run.
Use the same assumptions for each candidate: expected customer count, analytics users per customer, authoring needs, environments or deployments, data requirements, and support or contract terms. Model how costs may change as customers and usage grow, and ask which parts of the architecture are included in the quoted price.
Vendor examples to investigate
| Vendor | What its materials describe | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Zoho Analytics | SaaS embedding, SAML or JWT SSO, workspace-per-customer tenancy, white-labeling, REST APIs, and iframe, JavaScript SDK, or API-driven integration routes. | Which capabilities apply to your edition and deployment, and how the tenancy and identity design maps to your application. |
| Embeddable | Web components, customization of components and layouts, tenant-aware access controls, and advertised flat pricing. | Current plan terms, supported workflows, and the controls available for your use case. |
| Yurbi | Self-hosted embedded analytics for ISVs, multi-tenant security, white-labeling, and named-user pricing tiers. | Hosting and data-handling details, tenant controls, and current pricing for your deployment. |
| Bold BI | Embedded analytics and self-service BI as distinct offerings; SDKs, token-based authentication, and row-level security for embedded use. | How its security features are configured and tested in your architecture, and which capabilities your selected offering includes. |
| Tableau | Embedding APIs and developer tools, self-service authoring, and REST API management of users, content, and permissions. | Whether its authoring and management features fit your desired customer roles, workflows, and deployment. |
These are examples to investigate, not an exhaustive market map or an independent ranking. Product capabilities and plans can change. Tableau’s page also includes a customer testimonial from IDBS; it reflects that customer’s account, not a comparative performance finding.
