For image-to-video, begin with the image and describe the movement you want. For text-to-video, describe the subject and scene as well as the action. A better prompt can reduce some problems, but it cannot guarantee that a model artifact will disappear.
Start by identifying what went wrong
Before rewriting a prompt, name the visible defect. A warped face or limb during action is a motion problem; a character that looks different in another scene is an identity-consistency problem. A camera that creeps when it should be still is different from a subject moving unexpectedly. An abrupt scene change or discontinuity is a cut or sequencing problem. Address one defect per retry so you can tell whether a change helped.
- Distorted or unnatural movement: Check whether the action is too complex or fast, and whether the image suggests a different movement.
- Unwanted camera movement: Check whether camera instructions are missing or tangled together with subject instructions.
- Changing character appearance: Check whether the drift happens within one clip or between scenes, and whether reference or seed controls are available.
- Unexpected cut: Check for wording that implies a transition and whether the clip is too short for the requested sequence.
How to fix distorted motion
For image-to-video, inspect the source image first
The still image establishes much of the subject, composition, lighting, and style. Choose a clear, high-quality image whose pose and visual cues fit the movement you want. Motion blur, dust, or a strong mid-action pose can imply movement that conflicts with the prompt. Runway notes that conflicting implied motion cues may take more iteration to resolve, and demonstrates improved results after reducing them (Runway’s image-to-video guidance).
Then prompt for the change, not for everything the image already shows. Specify what the subject does, the direction and pace, and any environmental or camera movement that matters. Google Cloud puts the principle plainly: “Your source image already provides the subject, scene, and style. Focus your prompt on the motion you want to see.” (Google Cloud’s video-generation best practices.)

For text-to-video, describe the scene as well as the action
With no image to establish the scene, include the subject, setting, action, and relevant visual qualities. Keep the requested action coherent: one clear movement in one shot is easier to interpret than several unrelated actions, scene changes, or style shifts. Runway’s Gen-4 guide recommends simple, direct prompts and cautions against overloading short clips (Runway Gen-4 prompting guidance).
Prompt conventions are model-specific, not universal. Runway’s Gen-4 guide favors direct positive phrasing and warns that negative phrasing may be unpredictable for that model. Google DeepMind’s Veo guide, by contrast, describes detailed prompts that can specify framing, camera movement, style, lighting, character appearance, location, and action (Google DeepMind’s Veo prompt guide). Follow the guidance for the model you are using rather than assuming one vendor’s advice applies to all video generators.

Reduce competing instructions
Ask for one main action, with a clear direction and speed. If the movement still warps, simplify it further or choose an input image that better matches the requested motion. Change one thing on the next attempt—such as the action’s complexity or the source image—rather than adding a long list of extra detail.
How to keep the camera still or control its movement
Describe camera behavior separately from subject behavior. If you want a static shot, say that the camera is locked off and the subject’s movement is minimal. If you want a pan, dolly, or tracking shot, name that movement explicitly and keep it distinct from what the subject does. Runway’s image-to-video guidance recommends specifying camera work and temporal progression; its examples include “The locked-off camera remains perfectly still” and “Minimal subject motion only” (Runway’s image-to-video guidance).

A prompt may reduce unwanted drift without eliminating it. If only mild residual camera shake remains, stabilization in a video editor may help. Editing can address camera movement, timing, or clip joins; it should not be treated as a dependable way to restore a character whose appearance has changed.
Why an AI-video character changes appearance—and what to try
For scenes with the same recurring character, preserve the identifying details across prompts: for example, the same hair, face shape, clothing, and distinctive marks. Google Cloud recommends reusing an unchanged character description and the same seed parameter across scenes in its workflow. Where supported, Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation also describes reference images for preserving a subject’s appearance (Google Cloud’s best practices; Veo 3.1 model documentation).

These controls can help, but they do not promise identical results. OpenAI notes that maintaining temporal consistency over long videos has been a significant challenge for video generation systems, and says Sora can maintain a character’s appearance across multiple shots “often, though not always” (OpenAI’s Sora overview). If a character drifts, check that the same description and available reference inputs are being used, then simplify the scene construction and retry. Treat a changed appearance as a generation issue, not as something ordinary trimming or stabilization can reliably fix.

If you intended one continuous shot, remove wording that suggests a cut or transition. If the generator allows it, increase the duration so the requested action has room to finish, and explicitly ask for a continuous, seamless shot. Runway recommends these approaches for unwanted cuts (Runway’s image-to-video guidance).

For a sequence longer than one clip, build it as linked sections rather than asking a short clip to contain many beats. Use the final frame of one section as the next input where the model supports that workflow, then inspect and edit the join. Google Veo 3.1 documents first- and last-frame controls and video extension (Veo 3.1 model documentation). Those controls help structure a sequence; they do not remove the need to check the transition between generated sections.

A practical retry workflow
- Name one defect. Decide whether you are correcting motion, camera behavior, an unwanted cut, or character identity.
- Check the generation mode. For image-to-video, inspect the input image and focus the prompt on motion. For text-to-video, supply the scene and subject details the model cannot infer from a still image.
- Simplify the request. Use one coherent action with a clear direction and pace; separate camera movement from subject movement.
- Apply only relevant controls. For recurring characters, reuse consistent descriptions and supported references or seeds. For a continuous sequence, adjust duration or use linked clips and appropriate frame controls.
- Review the retry and change one variable. If the defect remains, try a better-matched image or a simpler movement. Use editing for mild camera drift or joins where useful, not as a promised repair for identity changes.
