For message previews on a locked iPhone, change the notification preview setting. For app access, use an app lock or Android Private space. For someone looking over your shoulder while you read, Samsung’s built-in Privacy display is a direct option on the Galaxy S26 Ultra; on other phones, turn the screen away or wait until you can view it privately. These measures address different risks, and none is a universal replacement for an angle-limiting filter.
Choose a fix for the kind of exposure you face

For side-view snooping: Galaxy S26 Ultra Privacy display
Samsung’s built-in Privacy display limits viewing angles, making it the closest built-in alternative to a privacy screen protector in the supported phone’s active display. Samsung identifies the Galaxy S26 Ultra as the supported model; do not assume the feature is a general Android setting or available on other Galaxy phones. Samsung says the feature “eliminates the need for additional protectors.” Samsung US Support and Samsung UK Support describe its availability and behavior.
Turn it on or configure when it activates
- Open the Quick Panel and tap Privacy display, or go to Settings > Display > Privacy Display.
- Choose whether to activate it for supported apps, PIN, pattern, or password entry, or notification pop-ups, where those options are available.
- For stronger angle restriction, enable Maximum privacy protection.
Maximum privacy protection dims the display, and Samsung warns that it may slightly blur the screen or alter colors. Samsung UK also cautions that some information may remain visible depending on viewing conditions, including angle and brightness. Settings and labels can vary by device, software version, or app version.
For message previews on a locked iPhone
Apple offers three Lock Screen preview choices: Always, When Unlocked, and Never. Previews can reveal message text, lines from Mail, and Calendar invitation details, so limiting them reduces what a passerby can read before you unlock the phone. Choose how much to show
- When Unlocked: A practical middle ground if you want to see message content after unlocking but not on the idle Lock Screen.
- Never: The stricter choice when you do not want previews displayed, with less at-a-glance information.
- Always: Keeps preview text visible even while the phone is locked.
Apple also allows notification settings to be adjusted for individual apps. This setting only addresses Lock Screen exposure: it does not prevent someone beside you from reading an unlocked display.
For sensitive app access: lock apps or use Android Private space
App controls can make it harder for someone who has your phone to open or discover particular apps. They protect access and visibility within the phone’s software, not the viewing angle of an active screen.

iPhone: lock or hide a supported app
Apple says locked apps require Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Hiding an app removes it from the Home Screen and search results and pauses its notifications. Use these features when the concern is someone tapping into an app or finding it on your phone—not when the concern is someone reading an open screen. See Apple’s guide to locking or hiding apps.
Android: put apps in Private space
Google’s Android Private space creates a separate area for apps. When it is locked, the space collapses and its apps are hidden from All Apps and various operating-system surfaces. You can configure it to lock whenever the device locks, after a delay, or on restart. Google’s Android Help guide covers setup and behavior.

Apps installed in Private space are separate instances: their existing app data is not copied into the private instance automatically. Confirm that Private space is available on your phone, then install and configure the apps you want to protect there. It is not a screen privacy filter.

Turning the display away from nearby people, covering it when it is not in use, or moving to a more private location can reduce casual observation—often called shoulder surfing. A USENIX Security 2023 paper discusses these measures while noting that they may not always be feasible or effective. Treat them as practical habits, not a guarantee that no one can see the screen.

What to use when one measure is not enough
- If previews are the problem, change preview visibility; a viewing-angle control is aimed at a different exposure.
- If someone could open an app, use an app lock or Private space; those controls do not obscure content already on screen.
- If someone can see an active screen from beside or behind you, use the supported Galaxy S26 Ultra display feature or change your position and viewing habits.
