There is no evidence-based universal winner for IP geolocation accuracy. MaxMind and IPinfo offer different data fields and deployment options, while a 2026 study found that errors vary sharply by network type and region. For a free starting point, IPinfo Lite offers unlimited authenticated requests for country-level geolocation and basic ASN data; MaxMind offers free GeoLite data and a web-service trial, but describes GeoLite as less accurate than its paid GeoIP products. Neither service can reliably locate a person or household.

What IP geolocation can—and cannot—tell you

IP geolocation estimates a location associated with an IP address or network. It can be useful for broad regional analytics, localization, or adapting a service to a visitor’s likely country. It does not reliably identify the person using an address, their household, or a street address.

MaxMind explicitly prohibits using its data to try to identify a specific household, individual, or street address, or encouraging others to do so. Its support documentation also says it cannot guarantee 100% geolocation accuracy. Treat coordinates as estimates, not a person’s position.

Which provider is most accurate?

The available evidence does not establish a single most accurate API. Accuracy depends on the requested level of detail, the user’s network and region, and how accuracy is measured. MaxMind’s published figures are its estimates for its GeoIP products; a separate 2026 study evaluated provider databases rather than current hosted API responses. Those are different kinds of evidence, not a head-to-head API ranking.

MaxMind’s published estimates

MaxMind’s current accuracy guidance estimates 99.8% country-level accuracy for its GeoIP products. For IPs in the United States, it estimates about 80% accuracy at the state or region level and 66% city accuracy within a 50 km radius. These are vendor estimates, not independent comparative results. MaxMind notes that results vary by country, network type, and ISP practices. City products include an accuracy radius; a city result should not be interpreted as a precise point.

What the 2026 database study found

In a paper published May 21, 2026, Syed Tauhidun Nabi, Jocelyn Bliton, Tijay Chung, and Shaddi Hasan evaluated GeoLite2, IPinfo, IP2Location, and DB-IP databases using 37,302 observations across 175 countries. In that study’s sample, median location errors were more than ten times greater for mobile than fixed networks: 179–207 km for mobile versus 3–16 km for fixed networks. The authors also reported failure rates above 53–61% in Asia and 66–72% in Africa, compared with 9–20% in Europe. They attributed important differences to coarse provider prefixes, noting that approximately 70% of mobile prefixes spanned more than 100 km geographically.

The providers’ offers are not directly equivalent: a request allowance is not the same as access to a particular data field, and downloadable databases differ from hosted API queries. Option Free access Paid pricing listed Notable data
IPinfo Lite $0/month; unlimited authenticated API requests for country-level geolocation and basic ASN data. Commercial use requires attribution, according to IPinfo’s pricing page. Not applicable to Lite. Country-level geolocation; city-level location and privacy detection are not included in Lite.
IPinfo Core Not stated as a free plan in the pricing information reviewed. $26/month for 150,000 API requests/month, as listed by IPinfo. Adds city-level geolocation and VPN, Tor, proxy, and relay detection.
IPinfo Max Not stated as a free plan in the pricing information reviewed. $163/month for 250,000 API requests/month, as listed by IPinfo. Lists richer venue and privacy-service details.
MaxMind GeoLite Free geolocation and limited network data through databases and web services; requires a free account. MaxMind describes it as less accurate than paid GeoIP. Not stated for GeoLite in the developer information reviewed. Free database or web-service access; confirm the fields and terms needed for your use.
MaxMind GeoIP web services Free trial advertised; a stable trial quota is not stated on the service page. Country: $0.0001/query; City Plus: $0.0003/query; Insights: $0.002/query, as listed by MaxMind. City Plus adds postal-code-level location and ISP/organization data to Country. Insights adds proxy detection, confidence factors, user count/type, static IP score, demographic data, and anonymizers.

IPinfo’s Lite request allowance is unlimited, but its geolocation remains country-level. If city-level data or privacy detection is required, compare the fields in Core or Max against the MaxMind tier that provides what you need. MaxMind’s per-query rates are not directly comparable to IPinfo’s monthly plans without knowing your query volume and field requirements.

For both providers, check the current account-specific license for commercial use and redistribution before building a product around the data. MaxMind’s free products require an account; IPinfo’s pricing page states an attribution requirement for Lite commercial use.

Privacy and responsible presentation

IP-derived location is network information, not reliable evidence of an individual’s physical location. Display it as an approximate area. When displaying MaxMind latitude and longitude, include the associated accuracy radius and make clear that it represents a larger area rather than an exact position.

  • Do not use an IP-derived location to identify or accuse a person, infer a street address, or make a high-consequence decision without an independent basis.
  • Do not assume providers have equivalent privacy practices. Review each service’s current privacy documentation and terms for your jurisdiction and use case; the product information compared here does not establish a provider-wide contractual privacy comparison.
  • Check licensing terms for attribution, commercial use, redistribution, and any data retention requirements relevant to your implementation.

How to choose for your application

  1. Set the required granularity. Decide whether country is enough or whether your application needs region, city, postal code, or coordinates with an uncertainty radius.
  2. List the fields you will actually use. Compare ASN, carrier or network context, VPN/proxy detection, confidence factors, and organization data—not just the word “geolocation.”
  3. Check fit against your users. Test a representative sample of your target IP population, stratified by geography and network type. Include mobile users and regions that matter to your service.
  4. Calculate cost at expected usage. Compare monthly request volume, included fields, API query charges, and free allowances. An unlimited free allowance for country lookups does not mean every data type is free.
  5. Choose an integration model. Decide between a hosted API and downloadable local data, accounting for update cadence, maintenance, and operational needs. Confirm the update requirements for the specific product you select.
  6. Set a fallback and a confidence rule. Use a less-specific result—such as country or region—when city data is missing or too uncertain for your application. MaxMind documents confidence factors for selected products and recommends falling back to less granular data below an application-defined threshold.
  7. Review use terms before launch. Verify attribution, commercial use, redistribution, and privacy obligations against the provider’s current terms for your account and intended use.

Missing location data is not automatically a provider defect. MaxMind says records can be absent for reasons including unrouted IPs and privacy opt-outs, and that it cannot confirm the reason for every individual absence.

Which free option fits best?

Choose IPinfo Lite for unlimited country lookups

Lite is a straightforward fit when country-level geolocation and basic ASN data meet the requirement and the application can make authenticated requests. It does not provide city-level geolocation or the additional privacy-detection data listed for paid IPinfo plans.

Consider GeoLite when local data or a free MaxMind path fits

GeoLite provides free geolocation and limited network data through databases and web services, with a free account. MaxMind says it is less accurate than paid GeoIP, so validate whether its fields and observed performance are adequate for your particular IP population.

Use a paid tier when its extra fields justify the cost

Paid plans are relevant when you need more than country-level location, such as city-level data, proxy detection, confidence factors, or organization information. Select by required fields and measured performance on your audience rather than assuming a higher-priced tier is automatically more accurate for every network or region.
