Rule-based tool-output pruning is a deterministic way to limit how much earlier tool output an AI agent sends into a later model call. Before inference, a filter checks prior results against rules such as age, size, and tool identity, then replaces eligible results with shorter previews. It can reduce repeated context, but it does not know which omitted details matter unless the rules or a separate mechanism account for that.

Why tool outputs are pruned

An agent typically adds a tool’s response—such as search results, a file listing, command output, or an error trace—to its conversation history. That history is then included in a later model request. As an agent makes more tool calls, accumulated output competes with instructions, the user’s request, and other context for space. OpenAI describes this growing prompt in its explanation of the Codex agent loop.

Pruning reduces the amount of older tool output carried forward. It is a context-management step, not a way to make the underlying tool return less data or to improve the model’s reasoning by itself.

How a rule-based filter works

  1. The agent calls a tool. The tool returns an observation, which is added to the interaction history.
  2. A later model call is prepared. Immediately before inference, middleware or a framework filter examines earlier conversation items.
  3. The filter applies explicit conditions. It may leave recent turns untouched, require output to exceed a size threshold, and allow pruning only for named tools.
  4. Eligible output is shortened. The filter replaces it with a compact preview or another configured representation. The model receives this transformed history, and the agent loop continues.

The policy is deterministic in the sense that the same inputs and rules produce the same eligibility decision. Unlike task-conditioned selection, a basic rule such as “trim old results longer than 500 characters” does not judge whether a particular line is important to the current task.

Example: the OpenAI Agents SDK trimmer

The OpenAI Agents SDK reference documents a configurable input filter that works as a sliding window: the most recent turns are protected, while eligible large tool outputs from older turns can be replaced with previews before a model call.

Its documented example sets recent_turns=2, max_output_chars=500, preview_chars=200, and trimmable_tools={"search", "execute_code"}. The reference describes defaults of two recent turns, 500 characters, and a 200-character preview; when trimmable_tools is unset, all tools are eligible. These are SDK-specific settings, not universal recommendations. The size check uses the model-facing string payload, so structured output may need a shorter preview to stay within the configured budget.

What pruning preserves—and what it can lose

A preview preserves a compact trace of an earlier result, not a guarantee that all useful details remain available. A long output may contain a key error line, code fragment, or evidence item that a rule removes simply because it is old or exceeds a threshold. Once omitted from the prompt, that material may not be recoverable unless the application retains the original or can fetch it again.

For safer implementations, exempt critical outputs, keep originals in retrievable storage, or test candidate rules against representative tasks. Check whether the agent can still find needed diagnostics, evidence, and code context after pruning. These are engineering safeguards; a size-and-age filter alone does not establish that a task will succeed.

How it differs from other context-management techniques

Not every context-saving method changes the same part of an agent workflow. Anthropic’s documentation describes several distinct approaches in its guide to advanced tool use:

  • Rule-based output pruning shortens selected results already in conversation history.
  • Context editing removes older tool results from history; pruning can instead replace selected results with previews.
  • Tool search delays loading tool definitions until they are needed, reducing the context spent on available-tool descriptions.
  • Programmatic tool calling keeps intermediate steps within a script rather than sending each one through the model’s conversation.
  • Prompt caching changes the cost of repeated input; it does not itself remove context from the prompt.

Where a framework supports them, these methods can be complementary because they address different sources of context pressure.

Deterministic rules versus task-conditioned selection

Rule-based filters generally decide from observable properties such as recency, output size, or tool name. Learned or task-conditioned methods instead attempt to retain material relevant to the current goal. That distinction matters: results from a learned method do not prove that a simple threshold filter will produce the same outcome.

The 2026 SWE-Pruner paper reports a 23–54% token reduction on agent tasks including SWE-Bench Verified and up to 14.84× compression on single-turn LongCodeQA for its studied method and setup. The 2026 Squeez paper reports results on its own benchmark of 11,477 examples—9,205 SWE-derived, 1,697 synthetic positive, and 575 synthetic negative—including 0.86 recall and 0.80 F1 while removing 92% of input tokens. These are paper-reported results for specific methods and evaluations, not performance guarantees for rule-based pruning or for agents generally.

Choosing and validating pruning rules

When configuring a deterministic filter, decide explicitly what counts as safe to shorten and how the agent can recover missing detail. The main design choices are:

  • Recency protection: how many recent turns or observations remain untouched.
  • Size measure and threshold: whether eligibility is based on characters, tokens, lines, or structured payload size.
  • Eligible tools and output types: whether every result can be pruned or only selected sources.
  • Replacement format: whether to retain a prefix, a structured preview, a summary, or a pointer to a stored original.
  • Recoverability: whether omitted content can be retrieved or the tool can be called again.
  • Validation: whether representative tasks still retain the diagnostics, evidence, and code required to complete them.

If considering learned selection instead, also assess whether reliable task hints are available, how much evidence is retained, whether output structure survives, and what additional inference cost or latency the method introduces. Evaluate the method on workloads resembling your own rather than treating a paper’s benchmark as a service-level guarantee.
