If you are choosing a career path, compare the everyday work, skills, education options, and U.S. job-market figures—not just the titles.
What does each role produce?

Both jobs require understanding technical material, attention to detail, and collaboration. The practical dividing line is whether your primary responsibility is to make a technical subject understandable or to make the software itself work.
What skills and work styles do the jobs use?
Technical writing
Technical writers need clear writing, critical thinking, precision, teamwork, and the ability to understand complex material. A key part of the work is anticipating what readers who lack technical knowledge need to know. As the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) puts it, “Technical writers must be able to simplify complex, technical information for colleagues and consumers who have nontechnical backgrounds.” Writers may work with engineers, designers, editors, illustrators, and other writers.
Software development
Software developers use programming knowledge, analytical thinking, communication, creativity, attention to detail, and collaboration. They evaluate user needs, design software components and how they interact, and test and maintain programs. BLS notes that developers must keep up with tools and computer languages throughout their careers. Its description of the work emphasizes that developers “must evaluate users’ needs and then design software to function properly and meet those needs.”

What education and experience can help?
Technical writer
BLS says technical writers typically need a bachelor’s degree. Employers generally prefer degrees in English, communications, journalism, or a related field; technical subject knowledge or experience can also be useful. Some people enter the field from a technical specialty or research role, and some employers provide short-term on-the-job training. Associations offer certification, but BLS does not describe it as mandatory.
Software developer
BLS says software developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related area, such as engineering or mathematics. A strong programming background matters, and internships can provide development experience. Some employers prefer a master’s degree. BLS also describes advancement into project-management specialist or computer and information systems management roles.

These are typical pathways, not universal hiring rules. Requirements vary by employer, specialty, and experience. Before investing in a degree or credential, check postings for the roles and locations you are targeting; look at what employers actually request and whether they accept equivalent experience.

The wage figures are occupation medians, not salary promises; actual pay varies by location, industry, experience, and responsibility. The growth and openings figures are not a like-for-like comparison: technical-writer projections cover technical writers, while the developer projections combine software developers with quality assurance analysts and testers.

BLS identifies digital product support needs as a demand factor for technical writers, while noting that AI tools may slow employment growth. For developers and related workers, it points to software expansion in areas including AI, the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, automation, cybersecurity, and connected products. These are broad national projections, not guarantees for a particular specialty or local market. Compare state or metro-area data and current job postings before using them to make a decision.

Start with the work you want to do repeatedly, then test that preference against real tasks and job postings. If you most enjoy turning complex systems into clear guidance, investigate technical communication roles. If you are drawn to programming, designing software, and maintaining it as needs change, investigate development roles. That is a decision aid, not a personality test or guarantee of job satisfaction.

- Compare daily tasks: Look for postings that describe actual responsibilities, not just the job title. Titles and requirements differ across employers.
- Try representative work: Draft a short setup guide from a product you understand, or build a small program and test it. Notice which process you want to improve and continue.
- Inspect local opportunities: Compare openings in your target location and specialty, including the experience and skills employers request.
- Plan a learning route: Match your existing background to the typical pathways above. A technical specialty or research experience may transfer toward writing; programming study and internships can build development experience.
Neither path is universally better. The stronger choice is the one whose core work fits your interests and whose real hiring requirements you are prepared to meet.
