On a typical Windows 11 personal PC, start with updates, then review privacy and app permissions, backup and sync, startup apps, default apps, notifications, and suggestions. Treat these as decisions to check—not a universal list of switches to turn off. Labels can differ between Windows versions, and a work or school administrator may control some settings.
1. Install available Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, and review restart timing or active hours. Windows Update delivers software updates and security patches, so leave it enabled rather than disabling it to address other concerns. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains the update process.
Delivery Optimization is a separate consideration: Microsoft says its default can share update and app content with other devices on your local network. That does not mean you need to turn off Windows Update. Review the relevant Delivery Optimization controls if local-network sharing is a concern. Microsoft’s essential services and connected experiences documentation describes the default.
2. Review privacy and app permissions
Open Settings > Privacy & security. Make choices based on how you use the PC and which apps you trust; turning off every permission can break features you rely on.

Check permissions individually
Review location, camera, and microphone access, including which apps are allowed to use each. Keep access for apps and features that need it; remove permission where it is unnecessary. Also review diagnostic-data options and decide what level of optional information you are comfortable sharing. Microsoft documents the available controls under Windows privacy settings.
Find the current suggestions controls
Depending on your Windows 11 version, the older General page may have been replaced by Recommendations & offers. Review the options there—or under General on older builds—to decide whether suggestions and app-launch tracking are useful to you. Understand the advertising ID choice
Turning off the advertising ID does not remove ads or reduce their number; it can make ads less relevant. Treat this as a personalization preference, not an ad-blocking setting. Microsoft explains the advertising ID and other privacy settings.
3. Decide whether Windows Backup and sync fit your needs
Open Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and inspect what is selected. Windows Backup can sync selected settings across devices signed in to the same Microsoft account. Decide whether account-based recovery and cross-device syncing suit your needs before enabling or relying on them. Microsoft’s Windows Backup guide describes the feature.

Do not assume that settings sync protects every file. Check the backup options and your own recovery arrangements for the content you need to preserve; the selected settings and content determine what is covered.
4. Remove unwanted apps and review startup behavior
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps to review software installed on the PC. Uninstall only apps you recognize and no longer want. Then open Settings > Apps > Startup and disable entries you recognize but do not need to launch automatically. Set default apps deliberately if you prefer a particular browser, mail app, or other handler. Microsoft’s startup-app instructions cover the startup controls.

These checks can reduce unwanted automatic launches, but Microsoft’s documentation does not establish a specific performance improvement. Avoid disabling entries you do not understand just to chase a speed gain.

To adjust Windows Security notices, open Windows Security > Settings > Manage notifications. You can reduce routine notices if you prefer fewer interruptions, but Microsoft says alerts requiring immediate action will still be delivered: “You’ll always receive notifications when there’s a problem that requires immediate action.” Microsoft’s Windows Security notification guidance explains the controls.

If the PC is managed by an employer or school, some options may be unavailable or governed by organizational policy. A message such as “Some settings are hidden or managed by your organization” indicates that an administrator may control them.
What changes if you use Windows 10?
Windows 10 reached the end of free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support notice. If you still use Windows 10, check Microsoft’s current support-status guidance before focusing on cosmetic settings.
A practical way to choose
- Privacy and personalization: Decide how much app access, optional diagnostic information, suggestions, and cross-device personalization you want.
- Security and recovery: Keep updates in your plan and confirm you have a recovery path for the files and settings you care about.
- Convenience and sync: Enable account-based backup or connected experiences only when their benefits suit your devices and preferences.
- Interruptions: Reduce routine notices or suggestions if they distract you, while preserving actionable security alerts.
Most settings can be changed after setup, so you can revisit a choice when your needs change. Microsoft’s connected-experiences guidance states that most settings remain adjustable after setup is complete.
