Set up statement delivery and transaction alerts separately in your bank’s official app or website. Choose a delivery preference for each eligible account under Statements, Documents, or Paperless, then open Alerts to select transaction, balance, or payment notifications. Exact menus and options vary by bank.
How do I set up monthly bank statements?
- Open the official bank app or website. Use the app you already have or type the bank’s known website address; avoid signing in through unexpected message links.
- Find statement delivery settings. Look for Statements, Documents, Paperless, or Delivery preferences. Labels differ by institution.
- Select accounts and delivery method. Choose the eligible accounts you want to manage and select paper or electronic delivery. If switching to electronic statements, review the bank’s consent and service terms and make sure you can open and save the documents.
- Confirm access and contact details. Check that your email address or mobile number is current. Save the changes and verify that the selected accounts show the intended preference.
- Set alerts separately. Go to the bank’s Alerts area; a statement-ready notification does not necessarily enable transaction alerts.
- Verify the result. Check your settings again after saving, then watch for the next statement or notification. If an option is unavailable or an account is ineligible, contact the bank through its official app or website.
For example, Wells Fargo describes online statements as PDFs and says it can send automatic email notifications when statements are available. Chase describes statement access through its website or mobile app. Those examples illustrate bank-specific services, not universal menus or account eligibility: Wells Fargo online statements and Chase account security features and alerts.
How do I go paperless with bank statements?
Use the bank’s paperless or delivery-preference setting to opt in for each eligible account. Read the electronic-delivery consent and service terms, and confirm you can sign in to retrieve and save statements. Check whether the bank specifies how long documents remain available and how to request paper copies; those details are institution-specific.
Statement delivery and a statement-ready email are different settings. Wells Fargo describes email notifications when online statements become available, but enabling that notification should not be assumed to enable alerts about account activity.

How do I get a text when money leaves my account?
Look for an account-activity, transaction, or debit alert and select text as the delivery channel if your bank offers it. If the bank allows a threshold, choose an amount that fits the activity you want to notice. Confirm that the alert applies to the right account or card and that the mobile number on file is correct. Not every bank offers every alert or delivery channel, and an alert is not a guarantee that you will hear about a transaction before it settles.
Federal Reserve interagency guidance describes transaction alerts as automated messages based on transaction size or risk parameters set by the customer or financial institution. It does not prescribe one setting for consumers or guarantee alert timing. Federal Reserve guidance on authentication and access.

Which alerts should I consider?
Choose alerts based on what you want to notice promptly and the options your bank actually provides. A practical starting point is to consider:
- Transaction or account activity: useful for noticing activity on an account or card.
- Large transactions: useful when you want a message only for activity above a chosen threshold, if the bank offers one.
- Low balance: useful for a balance warning at a level you select, if available.
- Payments: useful for notices tied to payments, where offered.
Before saving, check the trigger, threshold, delivery channel, whether the alert is optional or automatic, and which account or card it covers. Banks may activate some security alerts automatically while requiring you to select other alert types.

Do banks have to send monthly statements?
For U.S. consumer accounts covered by Regulation E, the general rule is a periodic statement for each monthly cycle in which an electronic fund transfer occurred, and at least quarterly if no transfer occurred. The rule says: “a financial institution shall send a periodic statement for each monthly cycle in which an electronic fund transfer has occurred; and shall send a periodic statement at least quarterly if no transfer has occurred.” See the CFPB’s current Regulation E, 12 CFR § 1005.9.
This is not a rule that every account in every country must receive a statement every month. Coverage and exceptions matter. The OCC gives a similar consumer-facing explanation for the U.S. rule: OCC statement guidance.

How should I monitor statements and suspicious activity?
Alerts supplement regular account monitoring; they do not replace reviewing statements and account activity. The CFPB advises consumers to monitor activity, review paper statements closely if they receive them, and report suspicious transactions promptly. Follow your provider’s official error-reporting instructions and applicable law when reporting a transaction. CFPB advice on monitoring accounts after card data is hacked.
If you keep paper statements, review them and handle them securely. Wells Fargo says online documents can reduce exposure to stolen paper documents, but that does not make electronic delivery the best choice for everyone. These sources do not establish that shredding prevents identity theft; choose the delivery method that works for you and your ability to access records.
