A PS5 system software update updates the console itself; a game or app update updates one title. They have separate check paths and separate automatic-update settings. You do not need a USB drive for ordinary online updates—Sony documents USB installation as a manual system-software troubleshooting option.
How the two PS5 update types differ

Check or install a system software update
- To see the installed version, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. Sony says “Up to date” appears when the latest version is installed.
- To look for an update, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then choose Update System Software if an update is available. See Sony’s system software update guidance for current instructions.
Update a game or app
- Highlight the game or app on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the options button on the controller and select Check for Update.
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions.
Sony/PlayStation Support says, “When you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest version available.” For a manual check, use the title’s options menu rather than the console’s system software update screen. Sony’s instructions for updating games and apps
Set automatic updates independently
The setting for console software does not control game and app updates. Configure each category in its own menu:
- System software: Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and enable automatic download or installation as desired.
- Games and apps: Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Choose Auto-Download, Auto-Install in Rest Mode, or both as appropriate.
Sony says Auto-Download without Auto-Install lets you defer installation rather than close a suspended game. For updates to run in rest mode, keep the PS5 connected to the internet. See Sony’s automatic-update instructions.

Troubleshoot an update that will not complete
System software update problem
If a system software download stalls, Sony advises restarting the download and trying again. If that does not work, Sony’s instructions include updating in Safe Mode or downloading the system software file on a PC or Mac and transferring it using a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Follow Sony’s official file and folder naming instructions in its system software update guide or Safe Mode and reinstallation guide.
Use only Sony’s official update files and stated methods. Sony warns that interrupting installation can damage the console, so do not turn it off while installation is in progress.

Game or app update problem
For a title that will not update, Sony’s initial checks include testing the internet connection and restarting the console. Its support guidance also recommends confirming that the PS5 system software is current; further options include reinstalling the game or app or following Sony’s Safe Mode instructions.
