There is no single graphics setting that makes every PC game look best. Reflections can transform glossy scenes, shadows and ambient occlusion add depth, and resolution and anti-aliasing affect detail and edges. The biggest visible improvement depends on the game, the scene, your display and your hardware—so compare changes in a place you actually play, and weigh what you see against the performance cost.
Which settings are most likely to change what you see?
Start with effects that alter prominent features in the scenes you play. A setting can look dramatic in one game and barely register in another; the categories below are useful starting points, not a universal quality ranking.
Reflections: most noticeable on glossy surfaces
Ray-traced reflections can make a conspicuous difference on reflective materials such as shiny floors, glass, or polished metal. NVIDIA’s Turing architecture whitepaper notes that the effect is especially apparent on specular and glossy surfaces. In a scene with few reflective surfaces, switching reflection quality may do little for the image. Ray tracing can also be used for shadows, lighting, and ambient occlusion, so the label alone does not tell you which visual change a game will produce.
Shadows and ambient occlusion: depth and contact
Shadows help define shape and show how objects relate to light; ambient occlusion adds shading where surfaces meet or sit close together, helping objects feel grounded. The appearance and cost depend on the game’s implementation. NVIDIA’s Control graphics guide compares shadow levels and ambient-occlusion options, while its Shadow of the Tomb Raider guide describes HBAO+ as adding more accurate ambient-occlusion shadowing. Those are game-specific examples, not proof that one setting or technique always wins.

Ambient occlusion may also affect areas beyond immediate contact points. NVIDIA’s Grand Theft Auto V guide, for example, discusses added shading at a distance. Whether you notice such a change depends on the scene and the game’s chosen technique.
Resolution and anti-aliasing: detail and edge quality
Resolution affects how much image detail can be represented, while anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges. Compare both fine detail and moving edges: a still frame may look clean even when edges shimmer or image details become unstable during motion. Upscaling can change the balance between performance and image quality, but there is no universally best upscaler or anti-aliasing mode across games and GPUs. Judge the available options in the game you are playing.

Texture quality and filtering: different jobs
Texture resolution controls the detail in surface images and can be limited by video-memory capacity. Texture filtering affects how those textures look when viewed at an angle, such as a road or floor stretching into the distance. These options are not interchangeable. In the scenes covered by NVIDIA’s Control guide, changing anisotropic filtering had only a minor effect on texture fidelity; that observation applies to those tested scenes, not every game.
How to compare settings without guessing
Use a representative gameplay area with the effects you want to evaluate. Compare a still image for fine detail, then move the camera or play through the same area to check stability, sharpness, and artifacts. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what caused the difference.

- Choose a repeatable scene. Use a location where the relevant effect appears—for example, a reflective surface for reflections or detailed geometry and contact points for shadows and ambient occlusion.
- Record a baseline. Note the current setting and observe the image and performance in that scene.
- Change one option. Move it up or down by one available level, or compare the game’s named alternatives. Avoid changing several options together.
- Compare still and moving images. Look for visible detail, edge smoothness, shimmer, softness, distracting artifacts, and whether the effect is present in the scenes you actually play.
- Check performance on your PC. Use the same scene and conditions for each comparison. Keep a change only if its visible benefit is worth its cost to you.
This approach is more useful than treating an FPS number from another system as a prediction. Results vary with the game, GPU, resolution, scene, and implementation.
What do published performance examples tell you?
They show why costs must stay attached to their game and test context. NVIDIA’s Control guide reports that its screen-space ambient-occlusion option costs 4–5 FPS with ray tracing disabled and approximately 1–3 FPS with ray tracing enabled. These figures describe that guide’s Control test context; they are not typical costs to expect in other games or on other systems.

That same guide reports only a minor texture-fidelity impact from anisotropic filtering in its tested scenes. NVIDIA’s guides for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto V likewise describe their own settings and performance behavior. They help explain what particular options do, but they do not establish a cross-game ranking or a fixed cost for “ultra” settings.

Pick the option most relevant to the scene and the problem you want to solve. Use this as a practical shortlist, then verify the result in your game:

- The scene has glossy, reflective surfaces: compare reflection quality, including ray tracing if the game offers it.
- Objects look flat or detached: compare shadow quality and ambient occlusion, paying attention to contact areas and nearby geometry.
- Fine detail looks soft or edges look jagged: compare resolution and anti-aliasing, then assess any upscaling option in motion as well as in a still frame.
- Distant or angled surfaces look blurry: distinguish texture resolution from texture filtering and test each separately.
Do not assume the highest preset is automatically the best choice. A setting is worthwhile when its improvement is visible in your play, its artifacts are acceptable, and its performance cost fits your priorities.
