If Server A’s clock is ahead, it may record an event at 10:05:02; a later event on Server B, whose clock is behind, might be stamped 10:05:01. Sorting those timestamps puts the later event first. Clock synchronization can reduce such discrepancies, but timestamps alone do not prove which event caused another—or guarantee a correct global order.
Why clock skew can invert event order
Each machine reads time from its own physical clock. A clock may be offset from another clock, and clocks can run at slightly different rates. Synchronization attempts to reduce the difference, but timing updates arrive with transmission delays and clocks are not guaranteed to agree exactly. A correction can also change a machine’s reported time.
As a result, sorting events from different machines by their wall-clock timestamps can produce a sequence that conflicts with what actually happened. The problem is not only that the timestamp may be inaccurate: by itself, it does not tell a reader how uncertain the reading was or whether the event influenced another one. The [Loyola University Chicago overview of clocks and synchronization](https://ds.cs.luc.edu/clocks/clocks.html) explains why rate differences and update delays prevent synchronization from making every clock identical.
What event order means: causality and concurrency
Distributed systems often need to know whether one event could have affected another, not simply which timestamp is numerically smaller. The happened-before relation captures that causal relationship: events on one process follow its local sequence, and sending a message precedes receiving that message. If a chain of such relationships connects event A to event B, A happened before B.

Some events have no causal path between them. They are concurrent in this sense: neither event is established as having happened before the other. A system may still choose an order for processing or display, but that choice is a serialization, not proof that one event caused or physically preceded the other. Leslie Lamport describes the distinction as a partial order: “There is only a partial order in which an event e1 precedes an event e2 iff e1 can causally affect e2.” See [Lamport’s paper, *Time, Clocks and the Ordering of Events in a Distributed System*](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/research/publication/time-clocks-ordering-events-distributed-system/).
How wall-clock, Lamport, and vector clocks differ
| Approach | What it tells you | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall-clock timestamps | Reported physical time for an event | Readable, useful for approximate chronology | Offsets, drift, corrections, and uncertainty can invert cross-machine ordering. See Loyola University Chicago. |
| Lamport logical clocks | A scalar logical counter that tracks ordering constraints | Preserves happened-before precedence; combined with a tie-break rule, it can produce a consistent total order | A larger value alone does not prove physical precedence, and a chosen total order does not reveal which events were concurrent. See Lamport’s paper and Loyola University Chicago. |
| Vector clocks | A vector representing process knowledge of events | Can distinguish causally ordered events from incomparable, concurrent ones | They carry more metadata than a scalar counter; the cited instructional source does not quantify the cost. See Loyola University Chicago. |
| Spanner TrueTime | Transaction timestamps within Spanner’s documented consistency design | Supports external consistency, including preserving the order clients observe transactions to commit | This is a Spanner-specific system guarantee, not a property of ordinary synchronized clocks. See Google Cloud’s TrueTime documentation. |
Lamport clocks: causal precedence without concurrency detection
A Lamport clock is a logical counter, not a clock that measures seconds. A process advances its counter as it records events and communicates enough counter state in messages to ensure that a send is ordered before the corresponding receive. The resulting values respect causal precedence. If an application needs one deterministic sequence, it can add a tie-breaker for equal values, but the resulting sequence does not mean every pair of events was causally related.

Vector clocks: retaining more causal information
A vector clock tracks knowledge associated with multiple processes rather than compressing ordering state into one scalar. Comparing vectors can show that one event causally precedes another or that neither vector dominates the other, indicating concurrency. That richer distinction costs more metadata, although the cited overview does not give a benchmark or quantify the overhead.
Why synchronizing clocks is not enough
Synchronization makes clock readings closer; it does not turn wall-clock time into a universal proof of causality. A generic synchronization service does not guarantee that every host has the same reading at every instant, nor that sorting timestamps yields a causally correct event history. There is no general, attributable “typical skew” figure established here, so a single milliseconds-or-seconds estimate would not be meaningful across systems and conditions.

For logs and monitoring, wall-clock timestamps remain useful as approximate human-readable chronology. For causal reasoning, use event relationships or a logical-clock mechanism appropriate to the application. For transactions that require clients to observe a consistent commit order, the database must provide that guarantee as part of its system design.
How Spanner accounts for clock uncertainty
Google documents Spanner’s TrueTime API as exposing time with uncertainty, and says Spanner uses its timestamps for transactions and consistent multiversion concurrency control (MVCC) reads. This is important because a lagging server’s local clock could otherwise assign a later transaction an earlier timestamp than an earlier transaction. A snapshot could then show a debit without the earlier deposit that should precede it.

Spanner’s documented external-consistency guarantee is that when one transaction completes before another begins committing, clients cannot observe the second transaction’s effect without the first transaction’s effect. That guarantee belongs to Spanner’s timestamp and transaction design; it should not be generalized to ordinary NTP-synchronized servers. Google’s [Spanner research paper abstract](https://research.google/pubs/spanner-googles-globally-distributed-database-2/) describes a globally distributed, synchronously replicated database with externally consistent distributed transactions and a time API that exposes clock uncertainty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an ordering method by the guarantee you need
- Approximate chronology for logs: use wall-clock timestamps, while treating cross-host ordering as approximate.
- Causal precedence: use a logical mechanism that preserves happened-before relationships, such as Lamport clocks.
- Detecting concurrency: use vector-clock-style causal state when the application needs to distinguish incomparable updates.
- Externally consistent transactions: choose a system whose transaction and time design explicitly documents that guarantee, as Spanner does.
These options make different trade-offs in guarantee, metadata, coordination, latency, and uncertainty handling. The cited sources do not provide quantitative cross-system benchmarks for those axes, so the choice should follow the ordering semantics the application actually requires rather than an assumed universal ranking.
