Halide offers a more explicitly manual camera workflow overall, with developer-listed controls for shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, plus RAW and processing options. Apple’s built-in Camera app is simpler for everyday shooting, but it is no longer limited to basic adjustments: Apple documents manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance controls, along with a histogram, on iPhone 18 Pro models. The better choice depends on your iPhone and the controls you want—not on a proven claim that either app always takes better photos.
Which app gives you more manual control?
For a dedicated set of manual exposure controls, Halide’s App Store listing explicitly names shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. Apple’s standard Camera tools include focus and exposure locking and manual flash selection, with available controls varying by mode and device. Apple documents a broader manual-control set in its built-in app for iPhone 18 Pro models: aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, plus a histogram for checking exposure.
That makes the comparison depend on your phone. What each app is best suited to
Apple Camera: quick, built-in shooting
Apple Camera is already part of the iPhone’s standard camera workflow. Focus and exposure lock let you hold a chosen focus and exposure while composing a shot, and manual flash selection gives you control over flash use. Controls are not available in every camera mode, and the advanced manual controls Apple documents are restricted to iPhone 18 Pro models.

Halide: a dedicated manual and processing workflow
Halide Mark III’s App Store listing describes full manual exposure controls for shutter speed, ISO, and white balance. It also lists RAW support, Process Zero for capture with reduced computational processing, Photographic Looks, and a Tone Fusion slider for adjusting shadows and highlights. The listing says looks can be applied to existing ProRAW files, that the app runs on iPad, and that it can import several standalone-camera RAW formats. Device and version compatibility matter
Do not assume that every control is available on every iPhone or in every mode. Apple’s advanced controls are documented specifically for iPhone 18 Pro models, while standard Camera controls vary by mode and device. Halide’s listing reports that version 3.2 added support for the adjustable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro. Before choosing based on a specific control, check your exact iPhone model, iOS version, camera mode, and installed Halide version against the current Apple guide and App Store listing.

Does Halide take better photos?
The documented feature lists do not establish that Halide or Apple Camera produces better-looking photos in every scene. Manual control and processing options can give you more influence over how a shot is captured or rendered, but that is different from a controlled image-quality comparison. Choose the app for the controls and workflow you will use, rather than an unsupported promise of universally better results.

Which app should you choose?
- Choose Halide if you want a dedicated camera app with listed shutter speed, ISO, and white balance controls, RAW options, and Halide’s processing tools.
- Choose Apple Camera if you prefer the built-in workflow and its available controls meet your needs. On iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple documents manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance controls as well as a histogram.
