Neither a tmux session nor a separate TTY, by itself, is a security boundary. tmux is the better choice for keeping work running after a disconnect and organizing multiple terminals; a separate TTY gives you a different terminal endpoint or console context. If you need to protect processes or data from another user or workload, use appropriate account permissions and operating-system isolation controls instead of relying on terminal layout.
What “isolation” means here
The word can describe two different things: separating terminal input and output for workflow, or preventing one process or user from accessing or affecting another. A multiplexer and a TTY can help with the first. Merely using separate sessions or terminal endpoints does not establish the second.
A TTY is a terminal endpoint. Linux documentation treats pseudo-terminals, process credentials, session creation, and terminal control as distinct interfaces; a different terminal or session ID does not, on its own, change a process’s credentials. How tmux sessions differ from separate TTYs
tmux: terminals managed through a server
The tmux project describes each program inside tmux as having its own terminal managed by tmux. Its structure groups panes into windows and windows into sessions; the tmux server manages programs and their output, while clients connect to that server. The project guide explains the model in its Getting Started guide, and the tmux manual documents the server, clients, and communication socket.

A tmux session can be attached to one or more clients. That is useful for collaboration or reconnecting from another terminal, but it also means that session access should be considered when deciding who can interact with the work.
Separate TTYs: distinct terminal endpoints
Using another TTY means interacting through a different terminal endpoint or console context. That separates the terminal I/O endpoint, but it does not automatically create a separate user, permission set, or protected operating-system environment. What processes can access still depends on their credentials and the surrounding system configuration.

Choose based on your goal
- Choose tmux for named workspaces, panes and windows, and work that should survive a dropped remote connection. The tmux project specifically identifies protecting remote-server programs from connection drops as a core use.
- Choose a separate TTY when you need another terminal endpoint or console context, rather than tmux’s workspace and reattachment features.
- Choose account and operating-system controls when the requirement is security separation. Select controls appropriate to the users, processes, and threat you need to address; terminal arrangement alone does not establish that processes cannot inspect or affect one another.
What tmux’s socket permissions do—and do not—tell you
The tmux manual documents a default socket location under a per-UID directory and says that directory must not be world-readable, world-writable, or world-executable. This is a relevant access-control consideration for the documented default setup, not a universal guarantee for custom socket paths or every configuration. Check the path and permissions actually used on your system in light of who should be able to connect to the tmux server.
